The 2017 Fonplégade is classy, polished and simply impeccable in its balance. The Fonplégade is not a huge wine, but it has really gained in finesse over the course of its aging. Crushed rocks, currants, cherries, flowers, licorice, smoke, cocoa and espresso covers all the bases in the perfume. Elegant and edgy, silky, soft and mineral driven, the fruits show a beautiful purity, freshness and refinement on the palate, leaving you with salty tannins and sweet plums that continue to linger and expand in the finish. The 2013 Fonroque comes across as a bit compact, with limited depth and complexity. Sweet red berries, hard candy, flowers and tobacco take shape nicely in the glass, but the mid-palate never really blossoms, which allows the oak tannin to dominate.HK$2,235.00 -

Power and structure in abundance, but it’s the spellbinding acidity that propels this stunning effort skyward. A shy nose of raspberries and sandalwood opens into a concentrated, long and impressively fruit driven palate (90% Merlot). Still grippy; needs time.HK$1,675.00 -

The basic Fontenil (95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon) has a deep bluish purple color and relatively hefty alcohol at 14.5%, but it is not noticeable in this full-bodied, layered, opulent wine, with lots of black raspberry fruit intermixed with some blueberries and crushed rock. Both of these wines have a good 10-15 years of potential in a fine cellar.HK$5,010.00 -

Vinous - Neal Martin (89)
The 2012 Fourcas Hosten has more definition and focus than the 2011, offering higher-toned and more vivacious black fruit laced with cedar and crushed stone. There is something almost Pauillac-like about this Listrac. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and well-judged acidity. It firms up toward the fresh finish, which has just the right amount of dryness and grip and an appealing marine tinge. This is worth seeking out.HK$1,605.00 -

The 2014 Fourcas Hosten has a pleasant, clean bouquet that lacks the presence and concentration I expect from this decent vintage. It seems a little diffuse compared to, say, the 2012 or 2016. The palate is balanced with grainy tannins, and quite compact, leading to a bitter cherry and blackberry finish. It does not quite knit together as well as I was hoping, hence my prudent score.HK$1,820.00 -

The 2015 Fourcas Hosten has a bullish, quite extravagant bouquet of high-toned blackberry and blueberry fruit; there is a sense of trying too hard to make up for the lackluster prior vintage. The medium-bodied palate shows grainy tannins that frame the tarry black fruit, and hints of pencil lead and white pepper. What this 2015 lacks is a bit of charm and elegance. There is also a sour note on the aftertaste. So-so.HK$2,195.00 -

The 2016 Fourcas Hosten is much better on the nose compared to the 2015, exhibiting more delineation and precision, and capturing your attention with plenty of vibrant blackberry and raspberry fruit laced with cedar and blood orange. The palate is well balanced with slightly chalky tannins, minerally black fruit and touches of cedar and mint. There is a sense of cohesion and confidence on the finish. This did not shine out of barrel, but now in bottle with a bit of age, it is growing in stature.HK$2,325.00 -

Bordeaux's relatively diverse weather, particularly its rainfall, means that vintage variation can be quite broad between some years. However advances in wine making techniques, technology and investment has meant that many chateaux are still able to create very good wines in "lesser vintages". From the best vintages wines are made that are clambered for all over the world and mature excellently for many years.
