Made from 100% Merlot cropped at minuscule yields of 20 hectoliters per hectare, the 2010 La Plus de La Fleur de Bouard was bottled unfined and unfiltered and came in at 14.5% natural alcohol. This wine ratchets up the level of extract, power, density and richness as well as tannin, so it needs 3-4 years of cellaring and can keep, I would assume, for up to two decades, given the performance of the 2000 in recent tastings I have done. Even more impressive, the 100% Merlot 2015 La Fleur De Bouard Le Plus is a vineyard/parcel selection from clay and limestone soils that was brought up all in new oak. This sensational, full-bodied, viscous 2015 boasts a deep purple color, awesome notes of cassis and black currant fruits, lots of truffle, smoke herbs and meatiness, sweet tannin, and most of its oak covered by a wealth of fruit. It’s a gorgeous wine and I suspect one of the best efforts out there from this appellation. Drink it anytime over the coming two decades.HK$2,135.00 -

The 2016 Le Plus de La Fleur de Boüard is every bit as promising as it has always been. Still in barrel, La Fleur possesses tremendous richness and pure power. Dark red cherry, plum, chocolate, torrefaction, spice and menthol all develop in the glass. The 1982 Léoville Barton has a slightly feral nose compared to its peers, probably due to some Brettanomyces, leaning towards Rhône in style, with hints of coffee granules that, frankly, are a bit off-putting. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly crunchy texture, plenty of black fruit intermixed with cedar and tobacco, showing some dryness on the finish. But this does improve markedly in the glass, cohering and the aromatics dispensing with some of their animal elements, prompting me to raise my initially parsimonious score. Crimson with a ruby rim and a classic cigar-box and tobacco-leaf nose. An interesting battle going on in the glass between the generally austere, straight-backed style of Barton and the lusciousness of the vintage. Aromatic sweet start and then a dry, even slightly tannic finish. Light hint of dead leaves (those famous dead tulips of Anthony Barton's?), almost of decay. Great balance. Bravo!HK$15,915.00 -

The 1996 Leoville Barton appears more youthful than the 1996 Langoa Barton in the glass with a healthy deep garnet core. The aromatics unfurl gracefully in the glass revealing briary, wild hedgerow, black truffle and sandalwood scents -- firmly in secondary aroma stage but with appreciable presence and intensity. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannin that form its firm and classic structure, spice, white pepper and cloves infusing the slightly animally red berry fruit. This is an adorable Léoville Barton that is occupying a very happy place at the moment -- superb precision, old school claret at its best. Decant for an hour no more, then enjoy.
