The Wine Independent (100)Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2019 Petrus unfurls very slowly to offer glimpses at licorice, fragrant earth, crushed rocks, and cinnamon toast hints over a core of juicy blackberries, black raspberries, and crushed violets with a subtle waft of dusty earth. Full-bodied, rich, decant and unashamedly flamboyant, the palate has super firm, super velvety tannins and amazing tension, delivering slow releasing exotic spice and black fruit layers, finishing very long, opulent and incredibly impactful. Tuck it away for another 6-8 years, at least, and then count on it transforming magnificently over the following 50-years+.

James Suckling (100)The transparency and complexity in the nose is wonderful, with so much floral character like violets and roses with some fresh spices. Dark berries, too. Sandalwood. It’s medium-bodied but then it just opens and unfolds with incredible depth of fine tannins and great length. It goes on for minutes. It opens like butterfly wings. What a wine. Superb. Drink after 2028.

Vinous - Antonio Galloni (89)The 2014 Peyrabon is an attractive, supple Haut-Médoc to drink now and over the next few years. Succulent red cherry, plum, tobacco and cedar wrap around the juicy, pliant finish. This is nicely done.

Vinous - Neal Martin (91)The 2020 Peyrabon has an attractive nose with wild strawberry and raspberry scents. Quite concentrated, it retains delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, well-integrated oak, harmonious with a lovely dash of cracked black pepper mixed with sage on the finish. Very fine.

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (86-88)(50% cabernet sauvignon, 48% merlot and 2% cabernet franc) Medium ruby-red. Discreet, classically cool St. Estephe aromas of blackberry, blueberry, violet and mint, with a light leafiness. Then fairly supple and lush for this wine, with moderate density and restrained sweetness. The berry flavors are firmed by harmonious acidity. The tannins offer good grip but turned a bit dusty with aeration. Finishing notes of game and herbs. Pauillac

Jancis Robinson (17)Tasted blind. Sweet fruit and fine tannins. Luscious and sinewy. Bit of a ballet dancer. Dry finish in a St-Estèphe sort of way. Reverberant finish. Refined and appetising. Bravo!

James Suckling (94)This has an air of authority with pristine red fruits, cassis and leafy aromas that lead to a palate with a powerful core of fine, long and fresh tannins. Plenty of ageing potential here. Try from 2025.

Vinous - Antonio Galloni (93)The 2017 Phélan Ségur has turned out beautifully. A wine of real substance and personality, Phélan Ségur is endowed with quite a bit of depth. Black plum, chocolate, spice, leather and mocha are some of the many notes that infuse this wonderfully expressive Saint-Estèphe. Readers should expect a bold, savory wine driven by strong Cabernet Sauvignon accents and structure. Accordingly, the 2017 needs time to be at its very best. In 2017, the Grand Vin contains an unusually high amount of Cabernet Sauvignon (65%), much of which was able to hang until early October, with 34% Merlot and 1% Cabernet Franc. Winemaker Fabrice Bacquey opted to reduce exposure to oxygen during fermentation with the goal of maintaining as much freshness in the fruit as possible. I continue to be deeply impressed with the work Bacquey, Estate Manager Véronique Dausse and consulting winemaker Michel Rolland have done at Phélan over the last few years. Tasted two times.
