  • Château de Ferrand 2010 (6x150cl)

Imbued with the elegant complexity of a well-aged Bordeaux, the Ferrand 2010 is truly a distinguishing choice for devout oenophiles. This unique vintage hails from the prestigious Saint-Émilion region, known for yielding the world's finest Merlot and Cabernet Franc grapes. Explicit attention to the winemaking tradition is the bedrock of Ferrand's reputation.

Each grape cluster is handpicked, meticulously sorted, and fermented in temperature-controlled concrete tanks, then aged for 18 months in oak barrels. Through this intricate process, Ferrand 2010 develops its sophisticated character, offering a nuanced bouquet of blackcurrants, licorice, and truffle, wrapped in pleasant tannins that speak to its impressive ageing potential.

Reflecting the excellence of its producer, Château de Ferrand, a Grand Cru Classé since 2012, Ferrand 2010 has alluring depth and a characteristically long finish, making it a sublime choice for discerning wine enthusiasts.

  • Château de Ferrand 2014 (6x150cl)

    Vinous - Antonio Galloni (88)

The 2014 de Ferrand is bold, powerful and juicy. There is not much subtlety here. Even so, the 2014 packs a real punch and offers plenty of intensity in a bold, rustic style. Black cherry, plum, bittersweet chocolate, cloves, menthol and a generous slathering of oak build into the opulent finish. This is in a powerful, extracted style, but there is enough balance to make the wine well worth seeking out. It would be interesting to see what the wine might taste like with less oak and a gentler approach to vinification. Tasted two times.

  • Château de Ferrand 2016 (12x75cl)

    Vinous - Antonio Galloni (93)

The 2016 de Ferrand is a gorgeous and wonderfully complete wine. Aromatic and yet also deep on the palate, with superb balance, the 2016 is going to be impossible to resist, even in the early going. Sweet red cherry, plum, French oak, rose petal, mint, spice and pomegranate all run through this silky, open-knit Saint-Émilion. There is so much to like in this plush yet understated, classy Saint-Émilion. Tasted two times.

The 2019 Château De Ferrand is beautiful and one of the finest I've tasted from this château. Gorgeous black raspberry, darker cherry, loamy earth, tobacco leaf, and chalky minerality all define the nose, and it's medium to full-bodied, has a seamless, beautifully balanced mouthfeel, and a great finish. It's one classy, balanced, elegant 2019 that will evolve for 15+ years.

  • Château de Ferrand 2020 (6x150cl)

    Vinous - Neal Martin (87)

The 2020 Château de Ferrand has retained its "breezy" bouquet with upfront, red cherries, raspberry coulis and floral scents; orange zest is hiding in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins. As I found previously, it feels a bit rigid and needs more flair on its briny finish. Not bad at all, but I feel this could have been better.

A blend of 66% Merlot and 34% Cabernet Franc, the 2022 Château De Ferrand is deep ruby/plum-hued and offers terrific aromatics of red and black cherries, new leather, savory tobacco, and iron. Concentrated and structured on the palate, it has medium to full-bodied richness, a balanced, layered mouthfeel, ripe yet firmer tannins, and a great finish. A beautiful wine, it’s going to require 4-6 years in the cellar and will drink nicely over the following two decades. This is a Château to watch.

  • Chateau de Fonbel 2008 (12x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (87)

This pleasant, elegant 2008 is less impressive from bottle than it was from barrel. Straightforward with good acidity and tarry black currant notes intermixed with a weedy, herbaceous character, it should be consumed over the next 5-6 years.

The 2010 Chateau Fonbel is a classic Saint-Emilion. Aromas of sweet black cherries, roasted thyme and rosemary dominate the palate while hints of cigar box and lavender linger in the background. Though Approachable now, this should age nicely for quite a few years.

    Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (89)

(a blend of 63% merlot, 20% cabernet sauvignon,10% petit verdot and 7% carmenère): Fully saturated inky purple. Coffee, cocoa and cassis on the nose, along with a musky note that I attribute to the carmenère. Then ample and sweet in the mouth, with syrupy blackberry and vanilla flavors that linger on the tangy, rather light finish.

Graphite, dark blue/black fruit, smoke and spices meld together in the 2012 de Fonbel. Beams of supporting minerality and tannin give the 2012 much of its energy and sense of direction. This is a very pretty, impeccably balanced wine from the Vauthier family. The blend is 60% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Petit Verdot and 5% Carmenère. Drink this attractive Saint-Emilion over the next decade or so.

This property is owned and managed by the Vauthier family of Château Ausone. Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2015 Fonbel—composed mainly of Merlot with splashes of Cabernet Sauvignon, Carménère and Petit Verdot—is scented of warm black plums, blackberry preserves, tar and bay leaves with touches of scorched earth and chargrill. Medium to full-bodied with very fine, silky tannins and amazing freshness, the palate offers stacks of red and black fruits, going minerally on the long finish.

A blend of 70% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 10% Carménère, the 2018 Château De Fonbel is a juicy, medium to full-bodied, elegant Saint-Émilion that has seriously good notes of black cherries, black raspberries, violets, and spice. It shows the ripe, sexy style of the vintage, but its purity of fruit and polished tannins set it apart. This is a beautiful wine and my money is on it being a best to date.
