The 2009 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has a savoury, quite meaty nose underneath that carapace of red fruit, very well defined with rose petal and light peony scents. Quite mercurial in the glass. The palate is elegant, though delivers all the substance you demand from a Grand Cru, demonstrating more flesh than the 2009 Ruchottes-Chambertin, quite minerally and intense on the persistent finish. This is a "grower"—the more I come back to this, the more I fall for its charms.HK$64,695.00 -

The 2010 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has a generous bouquet with ebullient red fruit, strawberry and cranberry, touches of candied orange peel and white flowers, and a hint of leather indicating that secondary scents are on the horizon. The palate has a sweet, ripe entry, gentle grip, a little meaty and savoury in style with a judicious touch of iron towards the Mazoyères-like finish (where two-thirds of the fruit comes from). This is very impressive and drinking beautifully now.HK$72,235.00 -

Red stone fruits, plums, menthol, rose petals and spices take shape nicely in the 2011 Charmes-Chambertin. In 2011, the Charmes-Chambertin is a bit savory and herbal, but it otherswise shows lovely balance and terrific overall depth in a pliant, mid-weight style that is best enjoyed over the next 10-15 years.HK$53,875.00 -

Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has a well defined and quite earthy bouquet, plenty of sous-bois character here, gently unfolding in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe red cherry and crushed strawberry fruit, fine tannins and a harmonious, caressing finish that demonstrates assiduous use of new oak. Everything just seems to effortless in this delightful Charmes-Chambertin from Armand Rousseau. Tasted September 2016.HK$6,415.00 -

Notes of dusty cherry, currant and leafy underbrush are the highlights of this tightly wound red, which is not giving much today, yet there is a center of sweet berry fruit. The fine aftertaste is fresh and resonant, with refined tannins. Best from 2022 through 2040.HK$11,680.00 -

Flavors of spice, floral, tobacco and mineral swirl around the core of cherry in this intense, vivid red. The dusty tannins quickly assert themselves, yet the fruit, spice and mineral elements hold fast. Offers a tangy, mouthwatering finish. Best from 2023 through 2045. 275 cases made, 102 cases imported.HK$7,880.00 -

The 2017 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has a fragrant bouquet with wonderful definition, superior to the bottle poured at Burgfest four years earlier, with copious brambly red fruit, forest floor and crushed limestone. Superb delineation and transparency. The palate delivers exquisite balance, sapid in the mouth, edgy and surprisingly spicy (I cannot recall that trait before). Very intense on the finish. This Charmes-Chambertin is delivering the goods as it ages.HK$49,080.00 -
(6x75cl) 2018Jancis Robinson (18)
Scented, red fruited, open. Then as it opens in the glass, it seems to become darker and more minerally, with stony finesse even with all this fruit. Lots of tension on the palate, partly from the freshness and partly from the tannins, which are dry and extremely fine. A caress with a firm hand. Then sweet again on the finish. On the finish this is long but seemingly gentle.HK$56,030.00 -

The 2019 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru is a splendid wine for the vintage. This has a sensual bouquet with vibrant red berry fruit, wild hedgerow, rose petal and, as I wrote before, quintessential Rousseau in style. Wonderful delineation. The palate is medium-bodied and armed with that killer thread of acidity. Vibrant and mineral-driven, it fans out gloriously towards the finish and has a long road ahead of it. Superb.HK$8,440.00 -

The 2020 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has a mixture of red and black fruit, beautifully delineated, hints of blood orange and crushed stone percolating through with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, perfectly judged acidity, slightly granular in texture towards the finish that displays commendable weight and length. Again, there is just the right sapidity on the finish. Superb.HK$6,860.00 -

The 2021 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has a well-defined and exuberant nose, albeit without the sophistication of its peers. It just wants to be enjoyed. The palate is smooth and rounded in texture with fleshy tannins and bright red fruit laced with citrus fruits, culminating in an ebullient playful finish. You could criticize its lack of complexity but it has so much joie de vivre that it would be mean. If you want your Charmes-Chambertin to dish out sensory pleasure, step this way. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.HK$6,210.00 -

At the top level, Rousseau consistently produces three profound wines - Gevrey-Chambertin-Clos St.-Jacques (as good as most producer's grands crus), Chambertin-Clos de Beze, and Chambertin. That being said, I remain perplexed as to why Rousseau's other wines are so surprisingly light and fluid. While good, sometimes very good, they are markedly inferior to his top three wines. Never one to jump on the bandwagon for forward, super-ripe vintages, (Rousseau still believes 1983 is the finest vintage of the eighties), he is unpersuaded by the acclaim bestowed on 1990. I was surprised by the lightness of the Clos de la Roche. The color is light ruby, and the nose is elegant, with a flowery, cherry fruitiness and a touch of earth in the background. In the mouth, this attractive wine is round, simple, and fruity. It should be consumed over the next 6-7 years. Rousseau reminded me that it had been bottled only one month when I tasted it, which, he claims, may have caused it to taste lighter. I might add that Rousseau does do a moderately intense filtration at bottling. Importer: Frederick Wildman, New York, NY.HK$12,105.00 -

Vinous (87-88)
Good cherry-red. More complex, riper aromas of black cherry, smoke, meat, mocha and herbs. Sweeter and silkier on the palate; this is a step up in material. The acids here are more successfully integrated. Finishes with good firm tannins and some complexity.HK$6,460.00 -

Medium, amber-edged red. Cherry, mocha and brown spices on the nose; a bit purer and livelier than the Mazy. Then sweet and full, with slightly green-edged plum and spice flavors. Rounder than the Mazy but could use more length.HK$6,980.00 -
Vinous (89-92)
Good full red. Complex aromas of black raspberry, espresso, mocha and underbrush. Dense, thick and concentrated; a step up in size from the foregoing wines. And yet this big boy shows a lovely restrained sweetness and comes across as round and not especially tannic. Long and lush on the aftertaste.HK$11,700.00 -
Vinous (89)
Medium red. Perfumed, complex nose melds raspberry, fresh rose, musky brown spices, smoke and underbrush. More intense and more primary than the Mazy, with spicy and floral notes combining with the juicy acidity to give the wine very good verve. Finishes longer and riper, with more spicy extract to stand up to the slightly peppery tannins. Shows the sappy character of the year.HK$9,255.00 -

The 2009 Clos de la Roche is so beautiful today I could hardly blame anyone who chooses to enjoy this superb wine in its youth. Silky tannins frame an expressive core of fruit in this perfumed, polished Burgundy. The 2009 is quite a bit more floral and higher-toned than the 2010, perhaps because of the greater use of whole clusters during fermentation. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2029.HK$14,005.00 -

The 2010 Clos de la Roche is fascinating to taste after the Mazis. The Clos de la Roche is all about power, structure and length, qualities it has in spades. There is huge depth and serious extract to the fruit, with equally big tannins to provide support. Layers of intense fruit are intermingled with persistent saline notes on the vibrant, finely chiseled finish. It will take years for the tannins to start melting away, but when they do the 2010 will be a dazzling wine. Actually, it already is. Anticipated maturity: 2030-2050.HK$15,115.00 -
