Vinous (92+)
(vinified with 75% whole clusters; 90% new oak): Bright, dark red. Reduced aromas of black raspberry and licorice accented by spices. Rich, round and voluminous yet light on its feet owing to intense minerality and lively acidity; offers complex flavors of black raspberry, black cherry, redcurrant, spices, flowers and crushed rock. An element of peppery, spicy herbs really lifts the finish today while giving the wine a slight edge that calls for patience.HK$9,875.00 -
Vinous (92+)
Good deep red with ruby tones. Ripe, deep perfume of black cherry, dark berries, crushed rock, wild herbs and game lifted by a peppery topnote. Very concentrated, intense, taut wine with terrific volume and inner-mouth energy. A captivating floral quality contributes another dimension. Explosive on the back end, saturating the mouth and exciting the salivary glands. Finishes with terrific late spicy lift. This wonderfully perfumed, classy wine needs time. Consumers will probably prefer the 2014 but the '13 is longer and has more finesse, said Sylvie Esmonin, adding that the 2014 doesn't have the same shoulders.HK$8,720.00 -

The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru is deeper in color than its peers. The signature Esmonin aromatics feature plenty of upfront, bold black cherries and raspberry fruit, a little confit, well-defined but requiring more years in bottle. The palate is medium-bodied with firm, quite strict tannins. This has closed down since I last tasted it. Very linear and grippy on the finish. Cellar away for several years. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting.HK$7,670.00 -
Vinous (93)
The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru is dense and forward on the nose, slightly more concentration and just a little more confit in style. The new oak becomes more prominent with aeration. The palate is sweet and slightly candied on the opening with blood orange infused black fruit, grippy and quite bold. Not a subtle Clos Saint-Jacque, but it retains delineation throughout, finishing with cracked black pepper and mineral notes. This will need several years in bottle. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting.HK$8,500.00 -
Vinous (93)
The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru has a mixture of red and black fruit on the nose, well-defined but backward. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins, quite dense and layered with touches of allspice and pain d'épices, veins of blood orange towards the finish that feels quite long. I suspect this will close down after three or four years as it tends to do, otherwise, cellar it away for a decade.HK$9,415.00 -
Vinous (91-93)
The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru had just begun its malo and contains 56% whole bunch. This has a tightly wound bouquet with blackberry, briary and light violet aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, fine acidity, quite linear and precise towards the finish. Lively and focused, I admire the joie-de-vivre in this Clos Saint-Jacques.HK$11,840.00 -
Vinous - Neal Martin (91)
The 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru has a slightly deeper colour than its peers. It has a comparatively intense nose with bold black cherry and boysenberry fruit and just a hint of dark chocolate. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly chewy tannins and that chocolate tincture interlacing the red fruit with a sweet figgy finish. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.HK$5,960.00 -
(12x75cl) 2022Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-95)
Deep purple. The barrel toast is immediately evident and gives a fractional burnt toast flavour to the wine. The volume of fruit, though, is immense and will soon take over. It covers the tannins smoothly. On the one hand you can see the class of Clos St-Jacques, on the other, the hand of Sylvie stands out. Drink from 2030-2039. Tasted Nov 2023.HK$15,300.00 -

The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Village offers intense brambly black fruit on a nose laced with orange zest. The palate is medium-bodied with fleshy tannins and moderate acidity, just missing some tension and terroir expression toward the sweet and quite candied finish.HK$2,745.00 -

The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin Village was picked up to 8 September and here, the malo was unfinished. This contains 50% whole bunch. The nose was a little difficult to assess because of that, though there appears to be plenty of vibrant black cherry and boysenberry fruit here. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fine acidity, quite fresh and harmonious with a little piquancy towards the finish.HK$1,235.00 -

(from vines that are to the east of D974 and mostly in Les Crais along with many other small parcels that include Le Fourneau, Reniard, Croix des Champs, Grands Champs, Champ Franc and Es Murots). A deeply pitched nose reflects aromas of humus-inflected poached plum, cassis and violet that display hints of earth and leather. The supple and succulent yet well-detailed medium weight flavors possess a lovely mouthfeel before concluding in a youthfully austere finish where a touch of wood arises. This is an fine Gevrey villages and worth your interest.HK$6,975.00 -

Esmonin's 2011 Gevrey-Chambertin Cuvée Vieilles Vignes is rich, powerful and explosive. Today the Vieilles Vignes is surprisingly brooding and introspective in style. Black fruit, violets, dark spices and menthol inform the mysterious finish. The 2011 isn't quite fully formed yet, but it is impressive and full of personality, that much is clear.HK$9,590.00 -
Vinous (89)
The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes offers dusty black fruit on the nose. It needs to demonstrate a little more Pinoté character, although pleasant floral scents do emerge with time in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannins. Lower acidity than its peers, it is a dense Gevrey-Chambertin with moderate grip, but like the Village Cru, it needs to show more Pinoté on the finish, which is muscular at the moment.HK$3,450.00 -

The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes is matured in 50% new oak with 60% whole-bunch fruit. I actually like the definition on the nose, which is intense but shows decent clarity, offering copious dark cherries, marmalade and blueberry aromas. The fresh palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, delivering dark cherry and black currant fruit laced with blood orange and white pepper and coming across quite citric on the finish. Good potential.HK$965.00 -

The 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes, aged in around 50% new oak, was again, too reduced to read on the nose at this stage. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, orange rind and elements of blue fruit. Quite focused, yet it tapers slightly on the finish at the moment.HK$6,915.00 -

(1x75cl) 2017Introducing the elegant Sylvie Esmonin Volnay 1er Cru Les Santenots 2017. This remarkable red Burgundy wine is a testament to the immaculate winemaking skills of Sylvie Esmonin, a leading female figure in the largely male-dominated Burgundy industry. Nestled in the historic French sub-region of Volnay, the Esmonin estate confidently delivers a rich terroir expression through this Premier Cru. Expect a charming palate of ripe cherry, raspberry, and a slight truffle undertone. Its striking complexity and elongated finish make the Sylvie Esmonin Volnay 1er Cru Les Santenots 2017 an ideal addition to any fine wine collection.

The 2015 Auxey Duresses 1er Cru comes from two parcels in Les Duresses and Les Grands Champs. It has a very satisfying bouquet with lifted blackberry, briary and light earthy notes. There is a light floral note developing. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp acidity, very well balanced with tart red cherry and cranberry leaf, nicely structured with a brisk, lively finish.HK$1,035.00 -
Vinous (89-91)
The 2018 Auxey-Duresses 1er Cru is a blend of Grands Champs and Les Duresses raised in around 30% new oak and 100% de-stemmed. It has a perfumed bouquet of crushed violets and iris, dark cherries and bilberry fruit. The medium-bodied palate delivers supple tannins and a fine bead of acidity. Taut and crisp with quite a saline, punchy finish. Excellent.HK$2,375.00 -
Burghound (89-92)
(from Les Duresses and Grands Champs). Slightly more elegant aromas include those of poached plum, cassis and newly turned earth. The seductive yet dense and powerful bigger-bodied flavors brim with dry extract that helps to buffer the firm tannic spine shaping the solidly persistent finale where the only nit is a hint of warmth. This moderately rustic effort should reward a decade of improvement and last for twice that. (89-92)/2028+HK$2,145.00 -

The 2021 Auxey-Duresses 1er Cru is a blend of three Premier Crus when it is usually two (the additional one comes from En Reugne). It has a light mulberry bouquet that just needs a little more delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins, quite saline in the mouth but it just needs more complexity on the finish.HK$2,745.00 -

Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2014 tasting, the 2014 Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru Combe d'Orveau from Taupenot-Merme has a more understated bouquet than Groffier's 2014 Les Haut Doix, perhaps more Morey-Saint-Denis in style, yet it is nicely focused and fresh and delivers ample mineralité. The palate is very well balanced with good substance, sappy black fruit laced with spice and a very dense but poised finish that feels primal and backwards now but will hopefully age with style. This surpasses my estimation from barrel, hence the higher score. Tasted September 2017.HK$1,270.00 -
Vinous (93)
Healthy dark red. Piquant high-pitched scents of raspberry, bitter cherry and crushed rock. Wonderfully dense, bright and light on its feet, offering terrific rose petal lift to its pungent red berry and saline mineral flavors. A pure expression of crushed-stone terroir, and yet there's also a silkiness here that suggests a gentle extraction. The tannins are very suave but the wine shows signs of closing down in the bottle and will need patience. I'm not sure if I'd pick this brisk, sharply delineated beauty as a 2015.HK$1,235.00
