Vinous (90-92)
The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Clos du Château feels a little smudged by comparison to the La Colombière, offering scents of dark berry fruit plus wilted iris flowers and incense. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, plenty of rich blueberry and black fruit and fine salinity toward the finish. This exhibits excellent length but it will require 2–4 years in bottle.HK$60,515.00 -

(from vines between 60 and 80 years of age) Good full red. Sexy aromas of cherry and Oriental spice. Fat, sweet and concentrated, with a gamey nuance and good inner-mouth life. This has lovely supple fruit nicely framed by firm acidity. Finishes with noteworthy persistence. A very good year for this clay-rich parcel.HK$147,060.00 -

The 2014 Vosne Romanée les Colombières is blessed with lovely pure fruit on the nose, fuller than some premier crus Vosne-Romanées with impressive fruité. The palate is medium-bodied with a succulent entry, nicely judged acidity and good mineralité. This is a stylish and suave les Colombières with a pleasing saline tang right on the finish.HK$96,460.00 -

(from clay soil at the bottom of the hill): Healthy red-ruby. Blackberry and black raspberry aromas are complicated by a gamey nuance. Plush and classically dry, with smoky and saline qualities and a touch of animal fur reduction that currently blocks the wine's fruit. This, too, will be racked soon.HK$13,865.00 -

The 2018 Vosne-Romanée La Colombière shakes off a little reduction to reveal slightly earthy red berry fruit laced with clove and bay leaf. The palate is medium-bodied with chalky tannins and a fine line of acidity. Quite saline in the mouth, with a taut, linear finish. Good potential for one of the domaine's entry-level cuvées.HK$68,395.00 -

The 2017 Monthélie Les Duresses was in barrel until October and then racked into tank as Lafon felt it was ready. It has a delightful bouquet of red cherries and crushed strawberry fruit, plus a little sous-bois. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly rustic tannins, but delivers pretty, earthy fruit and a light-hearted finish full of joie-de-vivre.HK$6,670.00 -
(12x75cl) 2018Vinous (89)
The 2018 Monthélie Les Duresses has a tightly wound bouquet, the fruit a little darker than I find on the nascent 2019, yet still well defined. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red berry fruit, quite compact and saline. A touch of black pepper enlivens the slightly broody finish. Cellar this for 2–3 years.HK$6,865.00 -

The 2019 Monthélie Les Duresses offers crisp raspberry and red cherry scents on the nose, which is well defined and floral in style. The palate is fresh on the entry, and quite fleshy for a Monthélie, with a brisk, uncomplicated finish. Fine.HK$9,185.00 -

The 2021 Monthélie Les Duresses, the only cuvée with a normal yield, sports a touch of reduction on the nose, red cherries and cranberry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins; this is quite a "stocky" Monthélie with dark berry fruit on the finish. Fine.HK$785.00 -

Sweet red berries, crushed flowers and spices are all woven together in the 2012 Volnay Champans. I am not sure I have ever tasted a Champans with this much texture and depth at Lafon. Sweet, silky tannins round out the supple, totally engaging finish. The 2012 is very, very pretty.HK$1,140.00 -
Vinous (92-94)
The 2020 Volnay Les Champans 1er Cru is a little richer and more opulent than the Clos des Chênes, ravishing dark black cherries, cassis and light violet scents burst from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, the oak a little more pronounced at the moment, therefore I would afford this bold Volnay 4-6 years in bottle if you can wait. Bottled under Diam 30. Closure: Diam 30HK$15,460.00 -
Vinous - Neal Martin (91)
The 2021 Volnay Les Champans 1er Cru has an attractive nose with pure red cherry and crushed strawberry fruit and an underlying mineralité. Hints of rose petal emerge with time. The palate offers tart cherry fruit mixed with orange zest, quite lively and focused. It is not a powerful Volnay and does not offer the sensuality of warmer vintages, but it is well balanced with a bright, edgy finish that will partner well at the dinner table. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.HK$14,750.00 -

The 2018 Volnay Clos des Chênes 1er Cru, which was bottled earlier than the Champans, has an intense nose of black cherries, blueberry, seaweed and iodine. The palate continues that theme: saline on the entry, dense and grippy, and very nicely focused with a lively, lightly spiced finish. Real succulence here, and very good persistence; the elegance is only apparent after the wine is slipping down the throat.HK$6,805.00 -

(the August hail resulted in a small crop of very ripe grapes, according to Dominique Lafon): Good medium red with the beginning of amber at the edge. Musky, fully ripe aromas and flavors of redcurrant, chocolate and earth, plus a whiff of cedar. (Lafon pointed out that he picked riper and did more extraction back in 2001 than he does today and one can sense that from the nose.) Fat, sweet wine with lovely depth and sound framing acidity; the fruit element is holding nicely. Finishes with fine-grained dusty tannins. Lafon told me that after the hail of 2001 he purchased a vibrating sorting table, and that ended up helping him eliminate the ladybugs in 2004.HK$1,955.00 -

The 2008 Volnay-Santenots is incomparably classy. Dark berries, spices and licorice are some of the nuances that emerge from this strikingly pure, beautiful wine. The Santenots possesses marvelous integrity and fabulous overall balance. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2033.HK$5,055.00 -

The 2011 Volnay Santenots-du-Milieu 1er Cru has a very well defined bouquet with ebullient redcurrant and crushed strawberry scents, hints of blueberry following just behind. The palate is medium-bodied with fleshy ripe tannin. The oak feels a little strong on the second half, quite savory and meaty in style with a pinch of spice towards the finish. This might be moving into its secondary stage and can be drank now and over the next decade. Tasted at Flint Wines Burgundy 2011 tasting.HK$12,800.00 -

Medium red. Wonderfully deep aromas of kirsch, blackberry, dark chocolate, licorice and minerals are lifted by a floral quality. Concentrated, saline and suave, delivering a terrific core of dark cherry, menthol and spices. A strong spine of refined tannins makes its presence felt late, allowing this lively wine to stretch out impressively on the spicy aftertaste. A classic vintage for this bottling.HK$11,860.00
