Vinous (90-92)The 2021 Volnay Les Caillerets 1er Cru was reduced to a single barrel for the first time ever. It does not quite have the complexity or terroir expression of the Champans on the nose, a little stoic and distant. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe tannins, a mixture of red and black fruit and fine acidity, plus a healthy sprinkling of white pepper and sage towards the persistent finish. Not quite the élan of the Champans, yet it pulls together nicely. |

Wine Advocate (91-93)Due to be bottled the following week, the 2013 Volnay 1er Cru les Champans has a flattering bouquet of redcurrant, cranberry and pomegranate fruit interlaced with undergrowth aromas that lend it a slightly rustic feel. The palate is medium-bodied with red cherries, orange rind and a hint of marmalade. It needs just a little more harmony on the finish but that should come with bottle age. The persistence at the moment is very promising…I can still feel this a minute after the wine has departed. |

Vinous (93+)The 2016 Volnay Les Champans 1er Cru has a wonderful bouquet of vivacious red cherry, wild strawberry, pressed rose petals and touches of sage and thyme. The palate is very well balanced with supple tannins and a fine bead of acidity, and crescendoing gently to a slightly meaty, delineated, long finish. I suspect this might close down for a few years, but there is huge potential here. |

Vinous (93)The 2018 Volnay Les Champans 1er Cru offers attractive black fruit mixed with briary, crushed rock and sea cave aromas on the nose that is all quite captivating. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, good depth and grip with a saline finish that gets the saliva flowing. Classy, old school Volnay. |

Vinous (92-94)The 2019 Volnay Les Champans 1er Cru, matured in 20% new oak, has darker fruit than the Fremiets, touches of blackberry and briary complementing the raspberry and cranberry. The oak here is neatly enmeshed. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, silkier than the Fremiets in texture with a piquant finish. Delightful and so fresh! |

Vinous (91-93)The 2021 Volnay Les Champans 1er Cru has much more brightness and delineation than the Fremiets this year, with red cherries, wild strawberries and just a touch of iodine and sous-bois. This is nicely focused. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, fine structure, pliant tannins and a harmonious finish. Not the most complex Champans encountered from this address, yet it has class. |

Wine Advocate (92-94)The 2015 Volnay 1er Cru les Fremiets has an elegant bouquet with scents of briary, woodland and red berry fruit. There is lovely purity of fruit here, great transparency. The palate is well balanced with fine structure, quite firm tannin, superb focus with red merging with black fruit towards the slightly saline finish. This is a great wine from Jean-Pierre Chalot. |

Wine Advocate (91-93)The 2016 Volnay 1er Cru les Fremiets, reduced to seven barrels this year (40% one- or two-year-old oak), offers attractive, pure, raspberry and crushed strawberry scents on the nose, floral scents (rose petals) sneaking out from under the coves with time. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, lithe tannin. I adore the harmony and precision of this Fremiets, not a powerful or flamboyant Volnay, but just Pinot Noir shimmering on the tongue. This comes highly recommended for those that appreciate classic Volnay. |

Vinous (88-90)The 2021 Volnay Les Fremiets 1er Cru is perfumed on the nose with rose petals and iris flowers infusing cranberry and strawberry fruit. Maybe it just lacks a bit of complexity. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, a slightly chalky texture and gentle grip with a structured and more Pommard-inspired finish. Give this a couple of years in bottle. |

The palate is medium-bodied with succulent ripe tannins, beautifully interwoven tannins, seamless in texture with veins of blue fruit towards the long finish. Vinous (85-87)The 2021 Volnay Vieilles Vignes is quite deep in colour. It offers dark berries, raspberry coulis and orange blossom on the nose, just a slight underlying reduction. The palate is medium-bodied with smooth tannins. It's tart in style, with black cherries, soy and white pepper, though it just misses a little ripeness on the finish. |

Vinous (85-87)From a 0.70-hectare parcel, the 2019 Aloxe-Corton Les Valozières 1er Cru has a focused, "cool" nose thanks to its north-facing vines. The palate is medium-bodied with good concentration, the 60% new oak just a little too dominant on the finish. Hopefully that will integrate with time. |

Vinous (90-92)The 2019 Echézeaux Grand Cru comes from the Les Treux lieu-dit and will undergo 20 months in new oak. The wood dominates the nose at the moment, although there seems to be sufficient black cherry and crushed strawberry fruit behind it. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent, smooth tannins, the new oak nicely integrated. It will require 4–5 years in bottle but I think this could turn out nicely. |
