The nose was a little difficult to assess because of that, though there appears to be plenty of vibrant black cherry and boysenberry fruit here. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fine acidity, quite fresh and harmonious with a little piquancy towards the finish.

It needs to demonstrate a little more Pinoté character, although pleasant floral scents do emerge with time in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannins. Lower acidity than its peers, it is a dense Gevrey-Chambertin with moderate grip, but like the Village Cru, it needs to show more Pinoté on the finish, which is muscular at the moment.

Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2014 tasting, the 2014 Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru Combe d'Orveau from Taupenot-Merme has a more understated bouquet than Groffier's 2014 Les Haut Doix, perhaps more Morey-Saint-Denis in style, yet it is nicely focused and fresh and delivers ample mineralité. The palate is very well balanced with good substance, sappy black fruit laced with spice and a very dense but poised finish that feels primal and backwards now but will hopefully age with style. This surpasses my estimation from barrel, hence the higher score. Tasted September 2017.

Wonderfully dense, bright and light on its feet, offering terrific rose petal lift to its pungent red berry and saline mineral flavors. A pure expression of crushed-stone terroir, and yet there's also a silkiness here that suggests a gentle extraction. The tannins are very suave but the wine shows signs of closing down in the bottle and will need patience. I'm not sure if I'd pick this brisk, sharply delineated beauty as a 2015.

The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannins, black fruit laced with graphite leading to a fresh, classically styled finish that stylistically reminds me of Morey than Chambolle. Time will let it make up its mind what it wants to grow up and become, but it will be quite excellent.
