Wine Advocate (90)Matured in 80% new oak, the 2013 Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru was bottled in December. It has a straightforward bouquet with brambly red berry fruit, perhaps a little rustic and missing a little complexity. It has plenty of sappy black fruit, good structure, but needs a little more flesh and persistence on the bay-leaf infused finish. Cellar this for a couple of years and see what comes out the other side. |

Vinous (92)The 2020 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has a fragrant nose: Morello cherries, freshly-picked cranberry and crushed stone, quite Mazis-like in style. The palate is fresh with a tobacco-tinged entry, lightly spiced with a fine grip on the finish. Maybe I would have liked more substance and a more lavish finish for a Charmes-Chambertin, but this should still drink well for 15-20 years. |

Burghound (89)(from .57 ha parcel in Charmes proper). A wafting, ripe and airy nose is also trimmed in just enough wood to notice. The succulent, round and equally seductively textured flavors contrast markedly with the somewhat chewy though not really hard finish where a touch of warmth slowly emerges. |

Wine Advocate (91)Tasted blind at Fine & Rare Wines' Clos Vougeot tasting, the 2013 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru from Domaine Tortochot has a slightly savory bouquet with redcurrant and cranberry, quite complex and opening nicely with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, a keen line of acidity and a pleasing bitterness with a sustained, quite tensile finish. Give this two or three more years in bottle and you will have a very interesting Clos Vougeot. This is much better than the bottle I encountered at the domaine last year. |

Burgundy | 1 | 86 (VN) | HK$8,485.00 | |||||
Vinous (86)The 2020 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru is laden with dark cherries, damson on the nose and very fruit-forward, but I feel at the expense of terroir expression. The palate is quite candied on the entry, powerful and demonstrative. Though the fruit profile is attractive, I think this is just a bit overwhelming and needs to show more restraint. |

Burghound (88)A more deeply pitched nose freely displays its aromas of plum, dark cherry and prominent earth scents. Wine Advocate (88-90)The 2106 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux Saint Jacques from Tortochot has a simple, rather rustic bouquet that needs a little more cohesion. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly coarse tannin, leafy with simple red berry fruit, but it needs a little more length to come through on the finish. Not bad, though not from the top drawer of this premier cru. |
