Tim Atkin MW (94)La Forge de Tart is made from the younger vines of the Clos de Tart, planted in 1999, 2005 and 2011 across the three levels of the Grand Cru. Firmer, spicier and a little less refined than the Grand Vin, but this is still an impressive Morey-St-Denis that fully deserves its Premier Cru appellation. Tangy, focused and refreshing with well-handled oak.

Vinous (92)The 2019 Morey-Saint-Denis La Forge de Tart 1er Cru has an open nose with touches of potpourri infusing the red berry fruit, brown spices and just a faint hint of espresso. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a fine bead of acidity, quite fresh and tensile towards the finish that feels very precise. This is very promising.

Vinous (91-93)The 2020 Morey-Saint-Denis La Forge de Tart 1er Cru has quite a high-toned and overtly floral bouquet, the 20% whole bunch neatly disguised. There is a touch of mint that emerges with time. The palate is very harmonious, silky smooth tannins, the 50% new oak seamlessly integrated. This is a clear level up from the Village Cru and feels caressing and sensual towards the finish. Excellent, but it deserves 5-7 years in bottle.

Vinous (88-90)The 2021 Morey-Saint-Denis La Forge de Tart 1er Cru comprises of a slight reconfiguration of sub-plots as they undergo replanting via massale sélection, including 25% whole clusters. This has much more delineation on the nose, poised and quite floral with more cohesion than the Morey Village. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, much more fruit concentration, lightly spiced with a silky finish that lingers much longer. Enjoy over the next decade.

Wine Spectator (91)A smoky, black cherry-laced red, showing density for the vintage and a muscular profile. The tannins are assertive now, but there's plenty of fruit amplified by the vivid acidity, with a crisp finish. Best from 2017 through 2026. 170 cases made. -BS

Vinous (93)The 2016 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru has a very pretty and pure bouquet, the oak here deftly integrated and allowing the dark cherries, cranberry and raspberry scents to flourish. The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannins framing the pure confit-like red fruit, just a splash of balsamic towards the finish lending another welcome dimension. I suspect that this will mature with style and panache. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting.

Vinous (95)The 2019 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru has a composed bouquet with a mixture of red and black fruit, tobacco, forest floor, a touch of wild mint and much more clarity than its peers. Fleshy, ripe and beautifully balanced, the palate is medium-bodied and supple, building succinctly toward the focused and complex finish. Wow...where did this come from??? Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

Falstaff (97)Iron oxide and black fruit shine on the nose, mixed with some reduction. The palate brims with freshness amidst that generosity, that ripeness, that fullness of the vintage. Flavours are clearly delineated, the fruit is dense, bold, fresh, juicy. This will go the distance.

Vinous (94)The 2015 Echézeaux Grand Cru has a competent, well-defined bouquet of raspberry, wild strawberry and earthy aromas. The medium-bodied palate is edgy in style, presenting fine tannin, well-judged acidity and a splash of balsamic that lends tension toward the sustained finish. This seems to improve in the glass, and that bodes well for the future. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.

Jancis Robinson (18)Fragrant and smoky on the nose and palate. Chewy texture, compressed fruit. Very much in its infancy. Tight, restrained and compact. Unquestionable purity of fruit, which has a charming bitter stemminess to finish.

James Suckling (96)A deep and really complex Echezeaux with a ton of forest berries, very polished tannins and wonderful sweetness that grows at the back of the palate. Very long and complex finish with a lot of herbal and mineral complexity. Very long finish. This will be delicious from release, but has a great future ahead of it.

Vinous (92-94)The 2019 Echézeaux Grand Cru, which comes from the lieu-dit of Les Champs Traversins, has a well-defined bouquet of raspberry and wild strawberry fruit, loamy/sous-bois scents and a touch of wilted iris petals. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-boned tannins, crisp acidity and a lightly spiced finish. This is a well-crafted Echézeaux from Bichot/Clos Frantin, and it should give 15–20 years’ drinking pleasure, possibly more.

James Suckling (96)A very elegant and refined Echezeaux that nimbly moves over your palate. Underplayed power and very fine tannins make this a shy beauty, but if you give it time and attention then you will be amply rewarded. Very silky and delicate, long finish. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95)One of the slightly darker purple colours, with a ripe and dark edged fruit. I sense the whole bunches more here than in the Clos Vougeot. Becomes more nuanced further back on the palate, with greater energy to the fruit. I was not sure from the nose but the palate works with a good balance between the slightly riper fruit profile and the acidity. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: October 2023.

Burghound (92)This beauty is maturing nicely as the spicy, cool and pure mix of both red and dark berry fruit scents is beginning to display soft secondary characters. There is fine power and volume to the robust and muscular medium weight flavors that exude a fine bead of minerality on the complex, balanced and solidly persistent finale. While this isn't fully ready it's not so far away that it couldn't be enjoyed now; that said I would prefer to give it another 2 to 4 years of cellar time first.

Wine Advocate (94)Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Vosne Romanée 1er Cru Les Malconsorts from Domaine du Clos Frantin was not the only wine from this Beaune stalwart that far exceeded expectations. Here, it has a pure nose with perfumed dark cherry and blueberry fruit, the oak here well integrated whilst maintaining fine delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with filigree tannin, well judged acidity, tensile with a finish that fans out gloriously. This is a superb, animated, energetic Vosne-Romanée that is an absolute delight.

Burghound (91-94)A pungent nose is presently composed of mild reduction and green tea with a few disparate spice elements lurking in the background. The muscular, serious and powerful medium-bodied flavors possess excellent depth of material that coats the palate on the very firmly structured, long and balanced finale. This has everything it needs to be first-rate as the tannins are mature and well-integrated and the balance is impeccable.

Vinous (96)The 2015 Vosne-Romanée Les Malconsorts 1er Cru seems to have been born to embarrass my rather tepid reaction to this wine from barrel. Wow! This has me smitten. It offers a very floral, seductive bouquet with pressed violet petals liberally scattered over the black cherry and wild strawberry fruit, and just a hint of vanilla in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannin. This is very cohesive, harmonious and silky-smooth in texture, with a light touch of blood orange and brown spices that impart complexity on the finish. Excellent. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.
