The 2014 Volnay 1Er Cru les Brouillards has a mixture of red and black fruit, wilted violets developing in the glass, quite refined and yet gaining intensity all the time in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red berry fruit. There is a touch of rusticity here, a little ferrous towards the finish, although it has commendable substance and length.

Dark red-ruby. Complex, dark nose melds blackberry, black raspberry, minerals, licorice, spices, mint and violet; reminded me a bit of a very fresh Cabernet Franc! At once dense and juicy, offering subtle soil tones and excellent purity and cut. This very fine-grained, dry wine finishes vibrant and alive.

The 2017 Volnay Les Brouillards 1er Cru offers lifted, tertiary red berry fruit that develops a subtle mintiness with time. The palate is well balanced, though not complex, and quite blocky at the moment, although there is decent weight on the finish.

The 2018 Volnay Les Brouillards 1er Cru has a fragrant bouquet of raspberry preserve, crushed strawberry and cranberry aromas that are neatly entwined with the oak. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly chewy tannins. A big-boned Volnay, quite spicy in the mouth, with black pepper and graphite notes toward the grippy finish. This has good long-term potential.

The 2019 Volnay Les Brouillards 1er Cru immediately hits a level up from Les Angles, offering scents of vibrant red berry fruit, sous-bois and a hint of morels, all delineated and focused. There is much more brightness and energy on the palate of black plum, raspberry and allspice, leading to a nicely structured, quite peppery finish that lingers in the mouth. Excellent.

The 2020 Volnay Les Brouillards 1er Cru has a very perfumed bouquet with violet-tinged dark cherry and boysenberry fruit, expanding nicely in the glass with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, quite lithe and smooth in the mouth with a touch of white pepper on the finish. Give this three or four years in bottle just to coalesce.

The 2021 Volnay Les Brouillards 1er Cru, which according to Clément Boillot, is picked a little later these days. It displays one of the Domaine's most attractive bouquets with quite vivacious dark cherry and crushed strawberry fruit, more concentration than its peers. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red fruit, a little brittle in texture but fine tension. What is lacks in length it compensates with vigour. Worth seeking out.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-93)

Not especially deep in colour, but the nose is rather fine, the elegance of Volnay, less demonstrative on the palate, with medium intensity of the strawberry, cherry fruit. Fair length. A wine of finesse rather than power. Drink from 2030-2036. Tasted: November 2023.

Deeper in colour than Les Angles and with a noticeably riper nose, along with a little more oak. Darker berries here, a slightly greater volume of fruit, with length, offering an additional degree of succulence. Drink from 2030-2035. Tasted Nov 2024.

Solid deep crimson purple. Magnificent deep rich imperial purple and feels much the same way on the nose. The fruit profile is a fraction darker than the estimable Boucherottes and perhaps with even more intensity, less heart on the sleeve, more wait for me in twenty years’ time. Tasted: November 2021

Bright mid crimson. There is additional density here on the palate, noticeable in the front of the mouth but continuing through to the well-integrated tannins behind. (5 Star Wine) Fresh purple of medium depth. Much the liveliest bouquet with its concentration of raspberries, very complete and absolutely delicious. The finish continues gorgeously, this will make a beautiful bottle with a little patience. This Clos des Ursules shows the classic peacock’s fantail of aromatics.

5 Star Wine. An even ruby purple. This is very complete, the fruit covering the palate effortlessly, the acid and tannin structure perfectly balanced and a particularly long aftertaste with a suggestion of blood orange. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted Oct 2024.

This red is solidly structured and packed with fruit. Black cherry and wild blackberry notes are beginning to struggle against the dense tannins as this appears to be shutting down. The 2017 Corton-Pougets Grand Cru has an attractive, wild strawberry, orange blossom and pomegranate bouquet, pure and charming and quite Chambolle-like in style. The palate is fleshy on the entry, delivering fine grip and decent red fruit laced with white pepper and graphite, but it tapers toward the finish, refusing to "kick on" and leaving you wanting more. The 2018 Corton-Pougets Grand Cru has a very composed, detailed bouquet of blackberry, wild strawberry and pressed rose petal aromas, the most elegant of the three Cortons 2018s from Jadot. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent tannins and wonderful acidity. Very harmonious, with an almost luxurious but compelling finish. Superb.
