The 2013 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru has an inviting, warm and enveloping bouquet that seems to surround the senses and give them a big hug. The palate is well balanced with fine tannins, animated citrus fruit underlying the black cherries and wild strawberry notes. There is really quite wonderful precision and focus on the finish. Dark, intense and vertical in this vintage, the Bèze nevertheless comes across as a bit more graceful and less overt than previous years, a reflection of where the Burguet brothers are taking the estate. It is very well defined and pure with small dark cherries, blueberry and iris scents. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin structure, a citric thread of acidity and an austere and serious finish that is more Morey-like in style. Wonderfully sappy and pure, without any impression of weightiness to its saline flavors of raspberry, spices and white pepper. Utterly fine-grained, silky wine with great finesse. One of the longest, most palate-saturating wines of this vintage, finishing with noble tannins and taste bud-titilllating perfume. Curiously, even from a used barrel the texture feels as if there is some new oak, but that is just the concentration of fruit coming through. At bottling time, Rousseau added most of this juice to the Clos St. Jacques, although a small amount was set aside for the estate's library.
