Tasted blind at the annual “Burgfest” tasting in Bouilland. The 2013 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru felt rather dilute on the nose -- perhaps picked too early? The palate is balanced but lacking real complexity and for want of a better word, the finish feels a little bland. I suspect this bottle had just gone awry and will seek to re-taste at a later date. Tasted May 2016.HK$1,600.00 -

The 2013 Corton Clos du Roi Grand Cru, which was two-third whole-cluster fruit, has a well-defined bouquet with very fine mineralité. These aromatics just speak of class. The palate is medium-bodied with fresh and supple tannins, finely-tuned acidity and commendable precision on the finish. This is a refined and sophisticated Clos du Roi in the making and one of de Montille's standouts of 2013.HK$7,470.00 -

Pale, bright straw-yellow. Grapefruit, wet stone and a metallic note on the nose. Good concentration to the pineapple and ripe grapefruit flavors, with firm acidity nicely leavening a slight impression of sweetness. Finishes dry and persistent, with good crunchy minerality.HK$1,265.00 -

(completely destemmed): Healthy deep, bright red. Very expressive, slightly metallic perfume of red berries and iron. Delivers a stimulating combination of sweet, almost candied fruits and penetrating acidity, with an herbal element contributing to the impression of inner-mouth lift. This very savory, intense Rugiens finishes a bit tough; in fact, it went into a shell in the glass.HK$8,695.00 -

Bright, dark red. Much riper on the nose than the Beaune Grèves but still with a medicinal aspect to the complex aromas of black cherry, crushed rock and flint. Plush, dense, savory wine with excellent purity and lift, conveying strong mineral cut to the raspberry and redcurrant flavors. There's something Vosne-like in this wine's salinity. The slatey finish features suave, well-integrated tannins; really glistens and rises on the aftertaste. This has turned out very well.HK$1,930.00 -

The 2013 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru les Malconsorts Christianne, which I asked to taste directly alongside the regular Malconsorts, has more delineation and precision, more mineralité coming through on the nose, veins of wet limestone and sea spray emerging with time. The palate is also noticeably different with greater tension and focus, a sense if coiled-up energy that is uncommon in this vintage. This surely illustrates the profound effects of terroir: a serious 2013 that should age with style.HK$21,335.00 -

Bachelet's 2013 Charmes-Chambertin is striking. Translucent and pulsating in the glass, the 2013 possesses notable energy and fabulous overall balance. Dark red cherry, violet, leather and smoke gradually unfurl in a mysterious, beguiling Charmes that will provide fabulous drinking for many years.HK$30,600.00 -

Bright and delineated, the 2013 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes is a terrific example of the year. Wild flowers, dark stone fruits, mint, crushed rocks, spices and leather are all given an extra kick of brightness in an energetic, chiseled Gevrey that delivers the goods. There is a lot to like here.HK$7,480.00 -

Matured entirely in new oak, the 2013 Chambertin Grand Cru has a beguiling, elegant bouquet that is beautifully defined with superb mineralité coming through with aeration. Nothing flamboyant, nothing overstated here. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fine acidity, very harmonious, with a svelte texture and it positively glides toward the pure sorbet-like finish. The small number of owners will be glad they have some of this nectar - for me, one of the wines of the vintage.HK$22,780.00 -

From 50-year-old vines that usually yield a generous 40 hectoliters per hectare, or thereabouts, the 2013 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux St Jacques has a very succinct and focused bouquet with mineral notes interwoven throughout the black cherry, blueberry and iodine scents. The palate is medium-bodied and is showing some of the 60% new oak at the moment, although there is sufficient fruit to absorb it. This has fine symmetry and focus with quite a long, tender finish. This is a sublime Gevrey-Chambertin to enjoy over the ensuing two decades, possibly more.HK$5,275.00 -

(90% destemmed): Good deep red. Ethereal aromas of red berries, minerals and spicy oak. Juicy, spicy and penetrating, conveying a light touch and excellent energy to the flavors of red fruits, pepper, herbs and licorice. Finishes with firm, ripe tannins and a spicy perfume that leaves the mouth refreshed.HK$81,820.00 -

Bright medium red. Wild perfume of strawberry, raspberry, pepper, caramel and earth. Lovely precision and lift to the tangy raspberry, cherry and spice flavors complicated by saline minerality. Quite tight today, showing a restrained sweetness. Finishes with firm-edged, slightly tough tannins and excellent length. A very good vintage for this grand cru blend.HK$24,100.00 -

Notably deeper colour. More violets and headier than the Échezeaux. Denser. Floral notes and the skein of freshness runs through this but with great charm and class. Notable acidity on the finish and the tannins are just about hidden. Medium weight fruit. Redcurrants poke through on the finish.HK$70,210.00 -

The 2013 La Tâche Grand Cru is dazzling. Bright and nuanced, the 2013 sizzles with energy right out of the gate. The 2013 is just starting to open. Ideally, a few more years in the cellar would be helpful, but the 2013 is so inviting at this stage. This late-ripening year produced a La Tâche that bristles with tension.HK$45,545.00 -

Burghound (96)
A whiff of post-bottling reduction does little to detract from the strikingly well-layered and ever-so-mildly exotic fruit, white flower and softly wooded nose. The super-rich and full-bodied yet beautifully delineated flavors possess a borderline painful intensity along with a taut muscularity before culminating a focused, tightly wound and powerful finale that really fans out as it sits on the palate. Moreover this markedly dry but not really austere effort is what I describe as sneaky long because just as the finish appears to be dying away it suddenly come back and plays hide and seek with your palate. Like most vintages of the Domaine's Montrachet this is undeniably built-to-age but unlike some of them the 2013 rendition is not likely to drink particularly well before the age of at least 10 and should reward somewhere between 15 and 20.HK$63,640.00 -

The 2013 Richebourg Grand Cru was harvested on the afternoon of October 9 and then the following day at just 16.5 hectoliters per hectare, the second lowest after the Echézeaux. It is clearly the elder brother of the 2013 Romanée-Saint-Vivant with intense dark cherry, black plum, tayberry and crushed violet aromas (the latter, perhaps a nod to the Romanée-Saint-Vivant). As with all the domaine's wines this year, it is beautifully defined with beguiling transparency. The palate is medium-bodied, but there is serious weight and presence here. It is struck through with sorbet-like freshness, hints of blood orange tincturing the vibrant red fruit, seguing into a finish with great conviction and confidence, a Richebourg self-aware though not preening about its status. This is a Richebourg to cellar for several years and to enjoy over the next 20 to 25 years (or more). Production is 551 cases. Tasted February 2016.HK$40,960.00 -

The 2013 Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru is still quite young, but it is drinking very nicely. Floral and lifted, with mid-weight, translucent structure, the 2013 expresses all of the understated finesse that is such a signature of this Grand Cru. Tea leaves, mint, dried flowers, cedar and blood orange weave through a core of red-toned fruit. Firm yet polished tannins extend the clean, bracing finish. Tasted next to the 2014, the 2013 is more aromatic and delicate in feel.HK$29,380.00 -
