Vinous (92)

Pale yellow-gold. Yellow peach and spicy oak on the nose. Concentrated and nicely delineated, showing excellent thrust and framing lemony acidity to its pear, peach and mineral flavors. Conveys an impression of high-altitude freshness but this is plenty ripe for the year. Finishes rich and long. Incidentally, this bottling is now a négociant blend of three components, two of them estate. There was previously a separate domain bottling of La Garenne, but Jadot decided that that was too confusing.

Vinous (92-94)

(one new barrel out of three and a half; from Pierre Damoy fruit): Healthy medium red. Very late-harvested aromas of ripe black cherry, red licorice and spices, complicated by nuances of honeysuckle, menthol, mint and leather. At once tightly wound and seamless, massive yet light on its feet, conveying terrific energy to its intense flavors of black cherry, raspberry and cinnamon. Finishes with suggestions of medicinal red cherry and licorice and excellent lift.

The 2013 Grands Echézeaux Grand Cru (Domaine du Clos Frantin) has a more pixelated bouquet than the Echézeaux -- very nicely focused with more tangible mineralité developing in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, impressive depth and focus, quite tensile with a hint of spice developing on the harmonious finish that exerts a gentle grip. This is a very fine Grands Echézeaux from Bichot.

Vinous (91+)

Reticent but complex aromas of lime blossom, hazelnut, minerals and wet stone. Drier and more austere than the Blanchots, with a juiciness verging on painful to its grapefruit zest and crushed rock flavors. Seriously mineral wine with excellent extract and chewy length. Boasts good depth but not quite the depth or dimension of the Blanchots.

Vinous (93+)

Bright medium red. Perfumed scents of black raspberry and espresso are complicated by soil-driven smoke and crushed-rock notes. The richest and most tactile of these young 2014s but also with great finesse to the flavors of red berries, rose petal, saline minerality and pepper. The wine's tannins are serious and deep but not hard. This true-to-its-terroir beauty really saturates the palate under a wave of flavor.

Wine Advocate (92-94)

The 2014 Richebourg Grand Cru clearly has the best bouquet amongst the A.F. Gros range: wonderful, minerally red berry fruit, dried flowers and just a hint of warm gravel in the background. It gains intensity in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, ripe tannin. The acidity is very well judged and there is a creamy texture lending harmony to this Richebourg. I do think it is the most complex Richebourg I have tasted from the domaine in recent years, but it is one of the most sensual. Give it 8-10 years in bottle so that it can show what it can do.

Wine Spectator (95)

A powerful, dense version, evoking cherry, currant and spice flavors, with underlying accents of mineral and tobacco. Tight and chalky on the finish, but showing promise. Best from 2020 through 2040.

Vinous (90-92)

(the Arlauds have gotten this fruit from 60-year-old vines through a fermage arrangement since 2004): Good bright red. Lively aromas of black raspberry, spices and violet. Juicy, fruity, spicy and fresh; very ripe but not a fleshy style. Finishes with noteworthy verve and punch, and the spine to reward aging. This dark clay and calcaire soil would probably be great for Chardonnay, noted Cyprien Arlaud.

Decanter (99)

This wine stood out at a recent vertical that stretched back to 1964. The 2014 vintage is an unqualified success here, with voluptuously ripe red and blackberry fruit, nuances of smoke and spice. The texture is silky and dense but perfectly balanced by a lovely freshness that carries the fruit to an impressively long finish. It is assembled from the three Rousseau parcels that total 1.42ha. Destemmed and fermented slowly on native yeasts before ageing in new casks.

The 2014 Gevrey Chambertin Clos du Château has a pretty red cherry and strawberry nose that is in keeping with the Rousseau style. The palate is crisp and lively, with fine tannin but not immense weight, but it is fresh on the tart cherry finish. Note that it has not been decided if this will be released or not. It sounds as if it will and it deserves to be, as it is keeping with the Rousseau style.

The 2014 vintage in Burgundy has been rung in with a great deal of local optimism and excitement. After three successive vintages of incredibly low yield and quantities, the growers of the Cote de Nuits were ready to welcome an easy vintage and the chance to make a bit more wine. Easy seemed to be the word on everyone's lips as the growing season presented few climatic challenges and viticultural decisions were by and large straightforward.

Tasting the wines from barrel, we quickly learned that the reds were easy to taste, forward and classical, while the whites were truly remarkable. More than one winemaker came forward to declare that 2014 saw the best white wines in a lifetime. Good levels of acidity kept the bundles of ripe fruit lovely, while the overall character of the vintage was in such good balance that the wines will be approachable from a relatively young age, while the best will age very well indeed.

In general the Cote de Nuits fared a bit better than the Cote de Beaune by virtue of having escaped the savage hail which effected the latter. As much as the hail devastated yields, it fortunately did not impact on quality and many producers managed to make some truly exceptional wines with great forward fruit and firm structure.

Overall this is a vintage with a lot to offer and for Burgundy lovers, it is one to celebrate. Each appellaton was true to style and the winemakers had room to impart their own subtle influence on the finish product. Freshness, flavour and verve are the keyword this year and they come together in bundles.
