This impressive white wine from red wine specialist Charles van Canneyt at Domaine Hudelot-Noëllat dispels the myth that one can’t do both. The 2017 Viré-Clessé, which will be bottled at the beginning of 2022, has a killer nose with an almost Germanic feel, intense nectarine, melon and damp earthy scents with just a hint of petrol. The palate is beautifully balanced with a line of acidity keeping everything taut and linear. The 2017 is a little waxy in texture with orange rind, stem ginger and white pepper furnishing the very persistent finish. Jacques Carillon's 2016 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Perrières is showing brilliantly from bottle, offering up a classic bouquet of crisp green apple, lemon oil and mandarin, complemented by some subtly exotic, musky top notes that lend this wine an old-fashioned feel and which weren't perceptible from barrel. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, satiny and intensely mineral, with more flesh on its bones than the Champ Canet but with a similarly incisive line of acidity, concluding with a long finish. I suspect this is likely to drink sooner than either the Champ Canet or the Referts this year.HK$15,035.00 -

(from a crop level of about 47 hectoliters per hectare): Pale, bright yellow. Ripe aromas of yellow peach, soft citrus fruits and spices. Rounder and riper than usual for this bottling, which is usually more taut in the early going, but without quite the concentration of Carillon's best 2016s. Aged in just 20% oak but one is aware of the wood element as there's only moderate buffering richness. Carillon believes that a rain shower in early September helped these grapes achieve maturity but may have resulted in a bit of dilution.HK$9,745.00 -

Jacques Carillon’s 2016 Puligny-Montrachet Village is showing well from bottle, offering up notes of white peach, crisp apple, citrus zest and white flowers. On the palate, it's medium-bodied, tensile and tangy, with a crisp, chiseled profile by comparison with the more gourmand, exuberant 2017 rendition—indeed, it's much more tight-knit than it appeared before bottling. It was cropped at some 50 hectoliters per hectare and didn't suffer badly from the frosts. Its lean but concentrated format will reward some bottle age with a very classic expression of Puligny.HK$8,325.00 -

The 2020 Puligny-Montrachet Village, a blend of several parcels, has a light Granny Smith and wet limestone-scented bouquet. It could benefit from more intensity. A light green streak in the pale colour. The refinement and the precision set this apart from 2023. The fruit remains discreet, with some fresh apple on the palate, certainly more backward, yet promising for the future thanks to the persistence. Drink from 2027-2032. Tasted Oct 2024.HK$3,800.00 -

The 2009 Nuits St. Georges Clos de la Marechale Blanc possesses gorgeous richness and depth. The aromas and flavors tilt towards the tropical end of the spectrum in this generous, inviting white. The 2010 Nuits St. Georges Clos de la Maréchale Blanc shows off fabulous balance and cool, insistent minerality. It boasts tremendous energy in its chiseled notes of lemon, crushed rocks and white flowers. The aromas, flavors and minerality are pure Chardonnay but there is a breadth to the wine that is unique and may be related to the fact that the Clos de la Maréchale Blanc is made from Chardonnay grafted onto Pinot Noir rootstock.HK$10,340.00 -

(harvested on September 12, with potential alcohol of 12.8%; from an east-facing, cool site at the top of the hill, just under the trees, where phenolic maturity usually comes before sugar ripeness): Pale, bright, green-tinged yellow. Pungent, raw aromas of crushed stone, pepper, truffle and earth: very white soil in character. The impression of rawness continues on the tight, leanish palate, which offers pure flavors of crushed stone, pepper and saline minerality. With less stuffing here than the Montrachet, this penetrating, soil-driven wine comes across as austere. But its lingering perfume suggests that it will reward extended cellaring.HK$16,135.00 -

These old vines sit up against the woods on the Ladoix side, so this is typically later in the succession of picking dates chez Prieur. It's hard to find Corton this delectable and charming, especially so young. The vintage shines through beautifully here. The wine blazes with pure yellow fruits, oyster shell and puff pastry. The 2020 Meursault Clos de Mazeray Blanc has a nicely detailed bouquet with jasmine and white flower scents complementing the citrus fruit. I find this more complex than the Beaune Blancs. (this wine finished its sugar fermentation in December of 2000, with three grams remaining). Cool aromas of liquid stone, hazelnut and spice. Very intense, austere and powerful, with the lovely touch of sweetness balanced by gripping acids. Has the sugar/acid balance and depth of flavor of a great dry riesling from Alsace. Sappy, racy and almost painful today. Finishes with an exhilarating hint of crystallized fruits. A wine of considerable potential, but in need of at least five or six years of bottle aging.HK$14,200.00 -

Bright pale-medium yellow. Rich, deep aromas of peach, iodine and oyster shell, with hints of eucalyptus and white truffle. Fat, sweet and compellingly rich but also chewy and tight, conveying a powerful impression of dry extract. Can't match the Chevalier-Montrachet for perfume or weightlessness but this has buns of steel. Finishes with great breadth and length, and the sweetening influence of vanillin oak.HK$44,390.00 -

The 2014 Montrachet Grand Cru (which incidentally Jacques was thinking about two cuvées from his two parcels) has a refined bouquet with lovely yellow flower and mineral scents that unfurl from the glass. This shows its class. The palate is very well balanced with a keen thread of acidity, hints of white peach and citrus lemon, very harmonious with an almost understated finish that lingers long in the mouth. (13.3% natural alcohol; about to be bottled): Bright, light yellow. Aromas of apricot, yellow grapefruit, apple and iodine. A distinct step up in intensity and cut from the Chevalier-Montrachet; higher-pitched and more energetic in the mouth, with its ripe apricot and citrus fruit flavors buoyed by excellent mineral support. There is some vanilla oak which comes through on the palate too, but the concentrated fruit wins out hands down. In fact, there’s nothing about this very great white Burgundy that’s overdone. The 2018 Montrachet Grand Cru is matured in 60% new oak. It has a finely tuned bouquet with scents of granite filtering through the green apple and pear aromas, and just a little linseed oil in the background. The well-balanced palate displays a fine bead of acidity, good tension from start to finish and a crescendo of concentration that leaves you feeling that you are in the presence of a famous (the most famous?) vineyard. There is a touch of phenolic character to the highly complex and exuberantly spicy nose of white peach, citrus confit, acacia blossom, Asian-style tea and just enough wood influence to merit mentioning. The imposingly dense broad-shouldered flavors possess a positively gorgeous mouthfeel thanks to the abundance of sappy dry extract that also serves to buffer the very firm acid spine supporting the strikingly persistent finish where the wood telegraphed by the nose reappears. This beauty is very, very backward and I would recommend not touching a bottle for at least ten years.HK$20,720.00
