The 2015 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru has a well-defined and focused bouquet. The oak initially feels loud, displaying toasty notes that admittedly marry well with the reduction, and then, magically, it coalesces and becomes more and more vivid and animated with aeration. The palate is very well balanced, and then flavors of mango, clementine and a touch of ginger reflect the precocity of the growing season. It feels a little heavy toward the finish, possibly with some botrytized fruit, but it develops precision with aeration. Very promising. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting. Vinous - Neal Martin (90)
The 2021 Meursault-Blagny Sous La Dos d'Ane 1er Cru demonstrates more reduction on the nose, although there is a quality wine beneath, delineated and displaying a sense of energy. The palate is predictably also quite reduced. Balanced with a keen line of acidity, but at the moment that reduction denudes this Meursault of personality. The palate is (again) very reduced at the moment, good weight and concentration, quite muscular yet missing a bit of grace on the finish. Difficult to figure this out. The 2018 Puligny-Montrachet Les Folatières 1er Cru has a wonderful bouquet with mineral-driven Granny Smith apple aromas and a touch of lemon rind. The palate is very well balanced with a fine bead of acidity. Fresh and focused, the oak is cleverly interwoven with a persistent finish. A domaine wine. Pale lemon colour. The bouquet is not especially demonstrative but the palate certainly is. The fruit is ripe, with some of those bacon fat notes, but otherwise with a quintessential purity, the flesh we expect of Folatières and a strongly stony feel throughout. Long and expressive. A domaine wine. Pale clear lemon. This again has one of the toastier noses, the effect of the second elevage on full lees. The fruit explodes on the palate, pure ripe white apples if one has to specify but both the class and the texture are impeccable. And perfect aftertaste. A strong 4 stars, a candidate for five. The 2021 Puligny-Montrachet Les Pucelles 1er Cru has a crowd-pleasing lime-scented bouquet that does not overpower the mineralité. There is a very slight reduction that is attractive in a "smoky bacon" style. The palate is more reduced than the nose (something that is atypical in my experience) and here it feels excessive, suppressing the freshness and fruit, rendering it just a little generic on the finish.
