(1x150cl) NVWine Enthusiast (100)
The return with a new iteration of this iconic Champagne, first produced in the 1980s, and named after Charles Heidsieck one of the great Champagne promoters of the 19th century, is to be welcomed. The wine itself lives up to the billing of its history, rich in the house style and with just a hint of maturity. This great wine, still full of white fruits, has so many years ahead. The wine is likely to mature gently for a decade at least.HK$8,685.00 -

This glows with a golden amber colour. A note of aromatic, lifted mandarin and orange marmalade richness is immediate, pure, bright and vivid. The more tertiary notes are distinctly present but subdued: subtle smoke, melted wax, toasted nuts – the citric verve keeps everything vivid. Notes of liquid blossom honey pop up, too. The palate has the same lemon freshness; it's luminous, pervasive, lifted. The mousse softens with time in glass and turns into a subtle whisper, showing beautiful concentration, real chalky depth and wonderful length. What a marvel. Tasted from magnum.HK$14,035.00 -

An amazing 2008 rosé Champagne that has all the structure and aromatic complexity - sushi ginger, oolong tea and caramelized mandarin orange - we associate with this vintage, but also has more charm than most. On the palate, this has stunning concentration, yet is diamond bright. The interplay of creaminess, fine tannins and mineral acidity builds and builds at the breathtaking finish. The color comes from about 7% pinot noir red wine, partly from the little-known Les Riceys in the far south of Champagne. Drink or hold.HK$4,600.00 -

The 2017 Extra-Brut Les Barres, 100% Meunier, is creamy, open-knit and quite delicious. Hints of dried pear, chamomile, spice, ginger and crushed flowers are nicely woven together. There is an exotic quality to the 2017 that is quite appealing. Already quite open and expressive, the 2017 will drink well right out of the gate. Dosage is 4 grams per liter. Disgorged: November, 2021.HK$2,470.00 -

The 2017 Extra-Brut Orizeaux, 100% Pinot Noir is rather attractive, even if it doesn't quite have the depth or textural presence of the very best wines in this range. Sweet red plum, kirsch, dried flowers and mint lend a good bit of aromatic nuance, but the 2017 is not ready to show all its cards yet. It does open beautifully with time in the glass, though suggesting all that is needed is a measure of patience. Dosage is 3 grams per liter. Disgorged: November, 2021.HK$1,260.00 -

The 2017 Extra-Brut Hors Série is a very pretty wine in a very challenging year. Apricot, dried flowers and tangerine oil are some of the notes that grace this decidedly airy edition of the Hors Série. All this is lacking is a bit of mid-palate pliancy, but 2017 was a hard vintage in the field. There's a touch of oxidation in the aromatics and a bit less body than in the best years, both of which suggest the 2017 is a wine for near- and medium-term drinking. Dosage is 0.75 grams per liter, perhaps a bit low for this vintage given its relatively understated structure.HK$1,945.00 -

The 2018 Extra-Brut Hors Série is superb. This really bristles with tension and energy, while also offering more mid-palate presence than the 2017 tasted alongside it. White flowers, chalk, mint, slate and lemon oil stain the palate. This chiseled, beautifully sculpted Champagne has so much to offer. The eternal finish is impossible to miss. The 2019 Champagne Blanc De Blancs Hors Serie Extra Brut comes from Avize, where the chalk is much softer, especially compared to that of Merfy in the north. In the glass, it boasts outstanding ripeness and structure, with notes of ripe citrus of orange and the spice of youthful oak framing the wine. Medium to full-bodied, it has the perception of volume without being weighted and boasts outstanding purity and concentration, with a seamless, balanced texture. It is going to be worth waiting for this vintage. There is a real power to this wine, with a silky underlying texture and a long finish, but it’s not austere. It has a more giving and approachable nature, with a finer and more rounded mousse, which lends a lightly creamy texture. Drink 2027-2050.HK$9,245.00 -

The NV (2021) Brut Nature Blanc de Noirs ADN de Meunier is a fabulous introduction to the house style. Rich and ample, with real phenolic intensity, the ADN de Meunier is seriously impressive. Dried lemon peel, mint, sage, white pepper and chalk are all amplified in the glass. Light tropical inflections add quite a bit of intrigue. All of the pedigree of this great Champagne vintage comes through in spades. This release is a blend of equal parts 2021 and 2020. No dosage. The NV Champagne Les Grandes Lignes Brut Nature is peppery and bright, more linear and tense, with a compact, long, chalky focus, even in this warm 2020 vintage. It packs in a great deal of energy and intensity, and is more angular in structure, with a nervous and coiled tension. While I appreciate the structure, the other two are more enjoyable at this tasting, as this comes off a bit harsh and austere. They will no longer be working with this parcel in the future because the vineyard owner chose to use it for themselves. Disgorged in September of 2024. Drink 2027-2045.HK$4,040.00 -
