Champagne
Champagne, the epitome of elegance and celebration, is widely regarded as the pinnacle of sparkling wines. As one of the most prestigious wine regions in the world, Champagne has captured the hearts of wine enthusiasts and connoisseurs with its exceptional quality, refined craftsmanship, and iconic vineyards.
Historically, Champagne has been dominated by some world-acclaimed Champagne House, which source grapes and harvest from Champagne growers. These famous Grandes Marques include Louis Roederer (Cristal), Dom Pérignon, Krug, Moët & Chandon, Veuve Clicquot, and Bollinger, all of them are revered for their notable names that display unrivalled winemaking prestige and pedigree.
In the recent decade, the emerging Grower Champagne trend in Champagne is shaking up the industry by challenging the dominance of the big Champagne houses. These small-scale producers, also known as "Récoltant-Manipulant" or RM, grow their own grapes and produce their own Champagne, showcasing the unique terroir and character of their vineyards. Jacques Selosse, Ulysse Collin, and Champagne Vilmart & Cie are among the most prominent names in this trend, producing some truly artisanal and terroir-driven Champagnes.
Champagne is primarily made from three main grape varieties: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier. These grapes are carefully selected and blended to create a harmonious and complex flavour profile. Chardonnay contributes elegance, freshness, and finesse, while Pinot Noir adds structure, depth, and fruitiness. Pinot Meunier brings a touch of roundness and vibrancy to the blend.
The region of Champagne is divided into several distinct sub-regions, including Montagne de Reims, Côte des Blancs, and Vallée de la Marne. Each sub-region has its unique terroir, characterized by variations in soil composition and microclimates, which influence the style and character of the wines produced.
Champagne offers various styles, from non-vintage blends to vintage cuvées and prestigious prestige cuvées. While Non-vintage Champagnes typically epitomise the house style, the vintage Champagnes are made from grapes harvested in one particular year (top vintages such as 1996, 2002, 2008 etc), in which these wines showcase the unique characteristics of the specific vintage.
The prestige cuvées, often the flagship wines of the renowned Champagne houses, are the pinnacle of excellence. These exceptional Champagnes are created using the finest grapes, the most meticulous winemaking techniques and often benefit from extended ageing to achieve unparalleled complexity and finesse.
Champagne is synonymous with celebration, elegance, and luxury. Its effervescent charm and timeless appeal have made it the drink of choice for countless special occasions and memorable moments. With its rich history, iconic vineyards, and unrivalled quality, Champagne continues to captivate wine enthusiasts and connoisseurs alike.

Wine Enthusiast (100)The return with a new iteration of this iconic Champagne, first produced in the 1980s, and named after Charles Heidsieck one of the great Champagne promoters of the 19th century, is to be welcomed. The wine itself lives up to the billing of its history, rich in the house style and with just a hint of maturity. This great wine, still full of white fruits, has so many years ahead. The wine is likely to mature gently for a decade at least. |

Decanter (99)This glows with a golden amber colour. A note of aromatic, lifted mandarin and orange marmalade richness is immediate, pure, bright and vivid. The more tertiary notes are distinctly present but subdued: subtle smoke, melted wax, toasted nuts – the citric verve keeps everything vivid. Notes of liquid blossom honey pop up, too. The palate has the same lemon freshness; it's luminous, pervasive, lifted. The mousse softens with time in glass and turns into a subtle whisper, showing beautiful concentration, real chalky depth and wonderful length. What a marvel. Tasted from magnum. |

James Suckling (98)An amazing 2008 rosé Champagne that has all the structure and aromatic complexity - sushi ginger, oolong tea and caramelized mandarin orange - we associate with this vintage, but also has more charm than most. On the palate, this has stunning concentration, yet is diamond bright. The interplay of creaminess, fine tannins and mineral acidity builds and builds at the breathtaking finish. The color comes from about 7% pinot noir red wine, partly from the little-known Les Riceys in the far south of Champagne. Drink or hold. |

Vinous (94)The 2017 Extra-Brut Les Barres, 100% Meunier, is creamy, open-knit and quite delicious. Hints of dried pear, chamomile, spice, ginger and crushed flowers are nicely woven together. There is an exotic quality to the 2017 that is quite appealing. Already quite open and expressive, the 2017 will drink well right out of the gate. Dosage is 4 grams per liter. Disgorged: November, 2021. |

Vinous (93)The 2017 Extra-Brut Orizeaux, 100% Pinot Noir is rather attractive, even if it doesn't quite have the depth or textural presence of the very best wines in this range. Sweet red plum, kirsch, dried flowers and mint lend a good bit of aromatic nuance, but the 2017 is not ready to show all its cards yet. It does open beautifully with time in the glass, though suggesting all that is needed is a measure of patience. Dosage is 3 grams per liter. Disgorged: November, 2021. |

Vinous - Antonio Galloni (94)The 2017 Extra-Brut Hors Série is a very pretty wine in a very challenging year. Apricot, dried flowers and tangerine oil are some of the notes that grace this decidedly airy edition of the Hors Série. All this is lacking is a bit of mid-palate pliancy, but 2017 was a hard vintage in the field. There's a touch of oxidation in the aromatics and a bit less body than in the best years, both of which suggest the 2017 is a wine for near- and medium-term drinking. Dosage is 0.75 grams per liter, perhaps a bit low for this vintage given its relatively understated structure. |

Vinous - Antonio Galloni (96)The 2018 Extra-Brut Hors Série is superb. This really bristles with tension and energy, while also offering more mid-palate presence than the 2017 tasted alongside it. White flowers, chalk, mint, slate and lemon oil stain the palate. This chiseled, beautifully sculpted Champagne has so much to offer. The eternal finish is impossible to miss. Dosage is 0.75 grams per liter. |

Vinous (92)The NV Brut Nature Blanc Assemblage, a blend of half Chardonnay and half Pinot Meunier grown on north-facing limestone soils, is made without any addition of sulfur dioxide. The nose is shy, but the palate delivers melted butter and creamy, fine mousse on a body of creamy red apple flesh. This Champagne has a tenderness and flowing sinuousness that make it wonderfully fluid, creamy and salty with exquisite but brisk mellowness. Bottled with zero dosage. |
