Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-96)
A fine deep purple, with brilliance. The bouquet has the energy which we expect with that extra note of headiness. The Malconsorts opens out gorgeously and is kept fresh by a good thread of acidity. Pure, long, fine, lifted, medium plus bodied but there is a little bit of majesty here nonetheless. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: October 2023.HK$12,115.00 -

The 2023 Vosne-Romanée Les Malconsorts 1er Cru was picked on September 9 with 25% whole cluster and 35% new oak. It offers pretty cranberry and wild strawberry scents on the nose, well-defined, if not quite as complex as its peers. The palate is well balanced with crisp, slightly crunchy red berry fruit on the entry. There is something "playful" about this Les Malconsorts. It doesn't take itself too seriously, yet there is ample tension and considerable mineralité on the finish. Not to be underestimated.HK$12,000.00 -

Much more subtle wood sets off overtly spicy aromas of cassis, black cherry and violet scents. The wonderfully seductive flavors possess a velvety and caressing texture while delivering sneaky good length on the firm but balanced structure. This is inviting but serious and it should repay up to a decade of cellaring. Worth checking out.HK$1,385.00 -

A pretty, fresh and layered nose reflects notes of red currant, lavender, violet and subtle spice notes. There is a really lovely and highly seductive texture to the satiny flavors that culminate in a firm and mildly robust but not really rustic finish. This is worth checking out.HK$760.00 -

(the blend is mostly from Damaudes with a small proportion of Basses Maizières). A fresh, cool and restrained nose combines notes of cherry, plum and a whiff of spiced tea. I very much like the texture of the nicely detailed and quite powerful medium weight flavors that terminate in a youthfully austere, and sneaky long finish that displays fine complexity. This is an impressive Vosne villages and worth your interest. (89-92)/2029+HK$815.00 -

A blend of Damodes du bas and Basses Maizières, picked on 3rd and 7th September. Attractive mid purple. Some nobility to the nose but in a discreet way. This is happily balanced with excellent class, heady Vosne fruit, even some spice, then a firmer tannin, but this works really well. Damodes gives the lift, Maizières the body. Drink from 2028-2035. Tasted: October 2023.HK$5,275.00 -

5 Star Wine. A blend of Les Damaudes and Basses Maizières, elegance from the former and weight from the latter. An attractive fresh ruby. The bouquet is absolutely Vosne Romanée in its classy petits fruits rouges. Then there is more concentration on the palate, as the Maizières component kicks in. The whole blends well together to a very classy finish. All the structural elements are in place while the raspberry fruit gains in intensity towards the back. Drink from 2028-2035. Tasted Oct 2024.HK$3,675.00 -

The 2001 Clos Haut-Peyraguey has a relatively high-toned, showy bouquet, much more floral than its peers, featuring yellow flowers, dandelion, mirabelle and saffron scents. The palate is cohesive with a fine bead of acidity, delivering nectarine, apricot and hints of elderflower. Spice, ginger and lemongrass notes emerge toward the finish, which lingers wonderfully. After a slow start, this turns into quite a compelling Sauternes.HK$5,000.00 -

Good medium golden yellow. Strong nutty, spicy, vanillin oak and marzipan currently overshadow pineapple and orange peel on the nose. Then a bit youthfully disjointed in the middle palate, combining sweet, fruit-driven peach with a slightly aggressive note of very ripe pineapple and substantial oak spice. But the fruit here is thick and strong, and the finish is fresh.HK$1,325.00 -

Seven years ago I said this was a monumental wine, and at two different recent tastings, it was a true star of the vintage. Its stunning dark plum color offers up notes of caramelized red and black fruits, toffee, smoke, Asian plum sauce, sweet cherries, chocolate, and espresso. Its spectacular aromatics do not disappoint on the palate, as this multi-dimensional, highly complex, opulent wine seems to have hit a magical point in its evolution. Full-bodied, and concentrated, there is no issue with drinking this dazzling effort now, but those who own it can certainly cellar it for another 15 or more years. Bravo!HK$9,720.00 -

The 2009 is one of the sexiest wines in Pomerol in this vintage, offering up notes of melted caramel, sweet mocha, blackberry and black cherry fruit, with hints of loamy soil and unsmoked cigar tobacco as well as a touch of white chocolate and some subtle toasty oak. Round, opulent and unctuously textured, with a full-bodied mouthfeel, fabulous purity, and no hard edges, this sumptuous, fleshy, lavishly rich Pomerol can be drunk now and over the next 25 years.HK$9,645.00 -

Sweet berries with hints of incense and spices on the nose with black truffles. Very ripe but not over-the-top. This is full-bodied, with chewy tannins and a smoky wood and mushroom undertone. It's dense and impressive yet very balanced. I like it, slightly better quality than the 2009. Give the wine five or six years of bottle age to soften before opening.HK$8,430.00 -

The 2012 Clos L'Eglise is wonderfully lifted in the glass, with plenty of Cabernet Franc aromatics woven throughout a core juicy, layered fruit. Rose petal, mint, cinnamon and sweet red berries grace the palate. Exquisite and beautifully nuanced throughout, the 2012 offers exceptional balance, with polished, silky tannins that round out the creamy finish. The 2012 is quite open today, but it could use another few years to soften further. The 2012 is 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. Proprietor Hélène Garcin and her husband Patrice Leveque continue to raise the bar here and at their other properties in the region.HK$10,435.00 -

Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the 2015 Clos l'Eglise has a very earthy nose of black soil, truffles and mossy bark over a core of kirsch, blackberry preserves and dried mulberries with wafts of rose hips and oolong tea. Full-bodied, richly fruited and packed with savory layers, it has a firm frame of grainy tannins and just enough freshness, finishing long and earthy.HK$4,595.00 -

The 2016 Clos l’Eglise has a delineated and very focused bouquet with rose petal and mint tinged red berry fruit, touches of truffle and chestnut emerging with time. The palate has improved since I last encountered it, gaining more precision and mineralité. It is finely poised with hints of dark chocolate and mint, less leafiness than I have noted in the past. The 2016 is finally coming into its own. Tasted at the Clos l’Eglise vertical.HK$4,545.00 -

The 2017 Clos L'Eglise has really developed nicely during its élevage. Blackberry jam, chocolate, spice, new leather and licorice give the 2017 much of its rich flamboyant intensity and textural richness. Notes of red cherry, red plum, blood orange, sage and mint add complexity. Even with all of its richness, the 2017 preserves terrific energy and a real sense of vibrancy.HK$4,500.00 -

The 2019 Clos L'Eglise is straight-up terrific, offering a deeper, richer, powerful style as well as the freshness and purity of the vintage. Giving up lots of ripe dark cherry, mulberries, graphite, spicy oak, and a kiss of minerality, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, ripe yet building, polished tannins, terrific overall balance, and a great finish. It shows the more tight, compact style of the vintage, yet the purity is spot on, it has good concentration, and it’s just a brilliant wine. It needs to be forgotten for 4-5 years and will evolve for 30 years.HK$3,430.00 -

Another beautifully textured, ripe, sexy wine from the Gracin family, the 2022 Clos L'Eglise comes from deeper clay soils on the upper plateau in Pomerol. Blue fruits, ripe black raspberries, leafy tobacco, chocolate, and truffly earth notes all shine here, and this beauty is full-bodied and has a layered, plush, sexy style that's already hard to resist. Nevertheless, it will evolve for 25+ years if well stored.HK$4,075.00 -

Good full red. Strawberry, mocha, earth and roasted oak on the nose. Surprisingly fresh and juicy in the mouth for the vintage, with lively fruit flavors that linger nicely on the aftertaste. This shows much less baby fat in bottle than it did from barrel last year, but more shape. The tannins are firm but not dry.HK$7,500.00
