I would never have guessed the 2011 Mazis-Chambertin was made with 100% whole clusters given how intense, rich and powerful it is. This is an unusual Mazis with little of the sensuality typical of this site. Instead, the fruit is explosive and powerful to the core. The 2018 Mazoyères-Chambertin Grand Cru comes from two parcels of 45- and 80-year-old vines on much stonier soils than the Charmes-Chambertin. The palate is silky-smooth on the entry and very precise and focused, with great tension toward the shimmering vintage. There is a wealth of great French wine outside the ‘Big 4’ (Bordeaux, Burgundy, Champagne and Rhone). The Languedoc Roussillon with it’s herby, robust Mediterranean reds, Provence with its pale, vinous roses, Loire with its flinty Sauvignons, crunchy Cabernet Francs, and endlessly fascinating Chenins, Jura with its old fashioned curiosities… the list goes on. Tradition and terroir are the veins running through them all, making French wines still the most emulated in the world.
