  • La Clemence 2019 (12x75cl)
    (12x75cl) 2019

    Jeb Dunnuck (92)

This château continues to impress, and their 2019 Château La Clemence is outstanding. Possessing a well oak, slightly modern style in its cassis and redcurrant fruits as well as notes of spicy oak, chocolate, and cedary herbs, it's medium to full-bodied, has a pure, balanced profile, ripe yet building tannins, and a great finish. It needs to be forgotten for 4-5 years and drunk over the following 10-15 years.
  • La Clemence 2020 (6x75cl)
    (6x75cl) 2020

    Vinous - Neal Martin (86)

The 2020 La Clémence has a touch of over-ripeness on the nose, just trying a bit too hard and losing some of its potential delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins, sweet licorice fruit on the finish. Moderate length.

  • La Closerie de Fourtet 2016 (12x75cl)

    Vinous - Antonio Galloni (91)

The 2016 La Closerie de Fourtet is a lovely second wine from Clos Fourtet. Pliant, supple and inviting, the 2016 offers quite a bit of near and medium term appeal. Sweet dark cherry, chocolate, spice and leather mesh together effortlessly, with a good kick of underlying brightness that gives the wine energy.

    (12x75cl) 2005

    Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (90)

Good deep red-ruby. Kirsch, minerals and mocha on the nose. Smooth and fine-grained; ripe but quite dry, with lovely clarity and intensity of flavor. Finishes with firm tannic spine and good length. Like the young 2007, this offers good structure for its year, but much more richness.
  • La Clotte 2013 (12x75cl)
  • La Clotte 2014 (1x75cl)

    Vinous - Antonio Galloni (92+)

The 2014 La Clotte is a striking wine that hints at the potential the Vauthier family will likely be able to coax from this site. Punchy red stone fruit, pomegranate, blood orange, spice and menthol are front and center. Supple and pliant, with terrific underlying structure, the wine is absolutely gorgeous. Bright mineral notes and Cabernet Franc aromatics infuse the finish in a super-expressive Saint-Émilion endowed with real class. The 2014 is a transition vintage for La Clotte. The Vauthier family (owners of Ausone and several other châteaux) purchased La Clotte in September 2014, just before harvest. The wine was made by consulting winemaker Jean-Philippe Fort, but Pauline Vauthier has since taken over. I would not be surprised if in a few years' time, La Clotte sits only behind Ausone in the Vauthier range. This is a very special site. In 2014 the blend is 80 % Merlot, 10 % Cabernet Franc and 10 % Cabernet Sauvignon.

  • La Clotte 2015 (12x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (95+)

This was the first vintage for the Vauthier family of Château Ausone off this tiny three-hectare estate. Composed of 80% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, 85% new, the 2015 La Clotte displays a medium to deep garnet-purple color and a very spicy nose of cinnamon stick, cloves, star anise and allspice over core of red and black currants, mulberries and black soil plus a waft of violets. Full-bodied and decadently fruited with a firm backbone of very ripe, beautifully velvety tannins, it has a lively backbone providing loads of lift throughout the very long finish.

  • La Clotte 2016 (1x75cl)

    Vinous - Neal Martin (96)

The 2016 La Clotte, part of the Vauthier family's portfolio, was outstanding out of barrel, and now that it is in bottle, I have no reason to alter my view. The sophisticated, beautifully defined bouquet features mineral-rich black cherry and raspberry fruit; hints of violet and bay leaf emerge with time. The sublimely balanced palate is sensual and refined, offering a fine bead of acidity and a silky-smooth texture. The very persistent, refined finish is exceptional. This must surely be the hidden gem of Saint-Émilion in 2016. It’s just a shame that only 10,000 bottles were produced. Try to buy one.

  • La Clotte 2017 (3x150cl)

    Vinous - Neal Martin (93)

The 2017 La Clotte was one of the Vauthier’s most impressive wines from barrel and now that it is bottled, I find no reason to change that view. It delivers gorgeous black cherry and raspberry coulis aromas, intermingling with sous-bois and crushed iris. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, fresh and vibrant, very well proportioned with a veins of _mineralité _ on the finish that might be a distant cousin of a very fine Loire. This is simply a superb Saint-Émilion that is rapidly making a name for itself.

    Jeb Dunnuck (94-96+)

From an estate purchased by Ausone in 2014, the 2018 Château La Clotte looks to be a sensational wine in the making, and I think it’s probably going to surpass both the 2015 and 2016. A blend of 85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5% Cabernet Franc, this deeply colored Saint-Émilion offers a smoky, blackcurrant, black cherry, and graphite-driven bouquet. This carries to a medium to full-bodied red that has a stacked mid-palate, tons of ripe, sexy fruit, building tannins, and a great finish. It’s a brilliant Saint-Émilion that’s going to need short-term cellaring but will cruise in cool cellars for two decades or more.

  • La Clotte 2019 (3x150cl)

    Vinous - Neal Martin (95)

The 2019 La Clotte was picked from September 27 to October 7. It has a complex bouquet of detailed red berry fruit, wild hedgerow, crushed stone and wilted rose petal aromas, engaging and (for the vintage) understated. The palate is medium-bodied, ripe and beautifully poised, with pliant tannins and a judicious touch of spice. This builds wonderfully in the mouth and feels elegant and refined, almost Burgundian on the finish. Wonderful.

The 2020 La Clotte has a sophisticated bouquet with blackberry, violet, crushed stone and just a hint of truffle oil. It is very delineated, and the oak is beautifully integrated. The palate is medium-bodied, fleshy and caressing in the mouth. Maybe it misses some grip, yet there is weight and presence, with a long, poised and understated finish. Wonderful. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

There is a wealth of great French wine outside the ‘Big 4’ (Bordeaux, Burgundy, Champagne and Rhone). The Languedoc Roussillon with it’s herby, robust Mediterranean reds, Provence with its pale, vinous roses, Loire with its flinty Sauvignons, crunchy Cabernet Francs, and endlessly fascinating Chenins, Jura with its old fashioned curiosities… the list goes on. Tradition and terroir are the veins running through them all, making French wines still the most emulated in the world.
