  • Lagrezette Le Pigeonnier 2016 (6x75cl)

    Jeb Dunnuck (97)

The flagship from a 7-acre parcel in the estate vineyard, the 2016 Cahors Le Pigeonnier is another Pomerol look-alike with its beautiful bouquet of black cherries, blueberries, damp earth, white chocolate, and exotic spices. As with all these 2016s, it’s a ripe, powerful, opulent wine that doesn’t pull any punches, yet always stays balanced, elegant, and remarkably fresh. Made from 100% Malbec aged two years in new French oak, it builds beautifully with time in the glass, has a deep, layered mid-palate, and a blockbuster finish. It’s possibly the finest Cahors I’ve ever tasted and would pass undetected in a blind lineup of top Napa Cabernets. While it’s no doubt beautiful today, I suspect it will develop even more nuance and complexity with 3-4 years of bottle age and keep for 15-20 years.

    Burghound (91-94)

A gentle application of wood sets off the intensely earthy dark currant and slightly gamy aromas. This resembles the Malconsorts in terms of its robust muscularity on the broad-shouldered flavors that possess excellent punch while delivering a touch of animale character on the youthfully austere and persistent finish. This isn't a wine of finesse but it is impressively scaled and clearly built-to-age.

    Wine Advocate (90-92)

From 1.35 hectares of vines in the upper sector of Clos Vougeot (in the lieu-dit Montiotes Hautes), Nicole managed to eke out just 12 barrels to make her 2016 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru. It has a pleasant bouquet with attractive woodland/undergrowth scents complementing the light red berry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannin, well balanced and perhaps demonstrating more substance than the Echézeaux that was equally impacted by the frost. I appreciate here the touch of white pepper lingering on the aftertaste. Fine.

There is a wealth of great French wine outside the ‘Big 4’ (Bordeaux, Burgundy, Champagne and Rhone). The Languedoc Roussillon with it’s herby, robust Mediterranean reds, Provence with its pale, vinous roses, Loire with its flinty Sauvignons, crunchy Cabernet Francs, and endlessly fascinating Chenins, Jura with its old fashioned curiosities… the list goes on.
