  • Lignier-Michelot Morey-Saint-Denis Premier Cru Les Genavrieres 2021 (6x75cl)

An exemplar of Burgundy's viticultural prowess, the Lignier-Michelot Morey-Saint-Denis Premier Cru Les Genavrieres 2021 hails from the famed vineyards of the Côte de Nuits. This wine is a testament to the Lignier-Michelot family's long-cherished tradition of producing distinctive Burgundian wines, renowned since the early 19th century.

Expect a robust, full-bodied palate that encapsulates the richness of Pinot Noir grapes harvested from 50-year-old vines that flourish in the limestone-rich soils unique to Les Genavrieres. Lignier-Michelot's careful vinification, including hand-harvesting, native yeast fermentation, and aging in carefully selected French oak barrels, bestows a remarkable elegance and complexity.

Intense aromas of red and black fruits harmonise with an undercurrent of earthy spices, creating a compelling bouquet. On the palate, the depth of taste is unrivalled, offering an enticing balance between a structured tannin framework and refined acidity. The Lignier-Michelot Morey-Saint-Denis Premier Cru Les Genavrieres 2021 truly embodies the sublime finesse and extraordinary ageing potential of Premier Cru Burgundies.

  • Lignier-Michelot Morey-Saint-Denis Premier Cru Les Genavrieres 2022 (6x75cl)

    Burghound (93)

(from a .30 ha parcel; 60% whole cluster). An exuberantly spicy and elegant perfumed nose displays subtle floral elements on the black cherry and essence of plum aromas. There is again a gorgeous mouthfeel to the middleweight flavors that are refined, even classy, on the youthfully austere, balanced and lingering finish that is highly complex. Lovely and worth considering.

  • Lignier-Michelot Morey-Saint-Denis Premier Cru Les Genavrieres 2023 (6x75cl)

    Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-95)

70% whole bunch with minimal punch down to avoid the wine becoming too muscular. Even so, the 2023 Genavrières has a noticeably darker purple colour with ruby rim. There is possibly an even greater volume of fruit here than my usual favourite of Faconnières, with summer pudding black fruits and a fresher redcurrant note to join in. Drink from 2032-2038. Tasted Nov 2024.

  • Lignier-Michelot Morey-Saint-Denis VV 2015 (1x75cl)

    Vinous (87-89)

(from vines in Les Chenevery, Très Girard and Les Cognées, the latter site on the other side of the Route Nationale; 80% vendange entier; also harvested after the rain): Higher-pitched on the nose than the Rue de Vergy, offering scents of kirsch, violet and minerals. Juicier in the mouth too, displaying good penetration but modest flesh to its black fruit and violet flavors. The slightly drying finish hints at bitter chocolate.

  • Lignier-Michelot Morey-Saint-Denis VV 2020 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (90-92)

Containing just over 80% whole bunch, the 2020 Morey-Saint-Denis Vieilles Vignes has a vibrant, fresh and delineated bouquet that gains intensity in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with a mixture of red and black fruit. Grainy tannins, fresh acidity, this has commendable precision on the finish. I envisage this ageing well in bottle.
  • Lignier-Michelot Morey-Saint-Denis VV 2021 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (87-89)

The 2021 Morey-Saint-Denis Vieilles Vignes just misses a little vibrancy and presence on the nose, lighter and perhaps more transparent than the Rue de Vergy. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and a mixture of red and black fruit. It's smooth and harmonious, the 80% whole bunches neatly integrated… It is just missing a bit of verve and amplitude.

  • Lilian Ladouys 2017 (12x75cl)

    Jeb Dunnuck (91)

Another terrific wine from this estate, the 2017 Chateau Lilian Ladouys comes from gravelly soils in Saint-Estephe and is 50% Merlot, 43% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Petit Verdot aged in 40% new oak. It’s also worth pointing out that this cuvee sees malolactic fermentation in barrel as well as plenty of time on lees, which I think normally gives the wine plenty of early appeal. Beautiful notes of cassis, tobacco, leafy herbs, and damp earth all flow to a medium-bodied 2017 that shows the more elegant, straight style of the vintage. It has some firm tannins, so give bottles a handful of years.

    (1x150cl) 2019

    Vinous - Neal Martin (92-94)

The 2019 Lilian Ladouys has a powerful, quite burly bouquet, a mixture of red and black fruit, wine gums, touches of blueberry and violet. It feels more Margaux than Saint-Estèphe! The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins, fine grip, just a hint of piquancy and a lovely estuarine/briny influence that defines the classic finish. I prefer the palate to the aromatics at this juncture, but overall this is promising. Tasted thrice with consistent notes.

There is a wealth of great French wine outside the ‘Big 4’ (Bordeaux, Burgundy, Champagne and Rhone). The Languedoc Roussillon with it’s herby, robust Mediterranean reds, Provence with its pale, vinous roses, Loire with its flinty Sauvignons, crunchy Cabernet Francs, and endlessly fascinating Chenins, Jura with its old fashioned curiosities… the list goes on. Tradition and terroir are the veins running through them all, making French wines still the most emulated in the world.
