Wine Advocate (90+)
The 2007 Cuvee Speciale Peby is a heavily extracted, extremely oaky effort with the wood so prominent that the fruit seems pushed to the background. There is a huge weight to the wine, which is very unusual in 2007, and there is good purity and density, but the oak is overwhelming at this point. The wine possesses outstanding concentration, and if the oak becomes better integrated, it will merit its score and then some. Patience is most definitely required as it needs at least 2-4 years of cellaring.HK$5,290.00 -

The opposite of the backward, classically styled, inward 2010, the 2009 Peby Faugeres is an extroverted, hedonistic, sexpot of a wine that delivers just about everything you could want from a bottle of wine. It too is inky colored and offers a heavenly perfume of blueberries, cassis, scorched earth, incense, licorice and hints of flowers. It’s a massive, full-bodied, opulent wine, yet stays light and graceful on the palate, with a weightless feel, which is even more remarkable given its incredible concentration, extract, tannic structure, and length. It’s a joy to drink today (in a youthful sort of way) but has another two to three decades of prime drinking. Bravo!HK$19,465.00 -

An absolutely prodigious, massively concentrated Saint-Emilion is the 2010 Peby Faugeres, which is 100% old vine Merlot, from a single parcel of south-facing limestone soils, brought up all in new oak. This beauty’s deep purple, almost blue, color is followed by a dense, backward bouquet of black and blue fruits, scorched earth, graphite, chocolatey oak, and an incredible minerality. More backward, dense, and brooding compared to the sexy 2009, hide bottle for another 3-4 years and enjoy over the following 20-25 years. It’s an awesome wine.HK$21,840.00 -

One of the super classics of the vintage, the 2011 Peby Faugeres (100% Merlot) exhibits a dense blue/purple color as well as gorgeous aromas of acacia flowers, blueberries, raspberries and blackberries. This full-bodied, concentrated wine has more in common with a 2009 or 2010 than most 2011s. The extravagant fruit character nearly conceals some sweet tannin in this masterpiece. Drink it over the next two decades or more.HK$5,055.00 -

The 2012 Peby Faugeres is another beauty, and shows how strong this vintage is for the right bank. Dense purple-colored with a terrific, ripe, opulent style in its deep black fruits, black cherry, chocolate, and graphite aromas and flavors, it has no hard edges, sweet tannin, just hints of background oak, and a big finish. It’s already drinking brilliantly yet will cruise for another 15-20 years.HK$6,510.00 -

Moderately saturated ruby-red. Highly nuanced, aromatic nose offers black plum, raspberry, tobacco and nutty oak. Sweet, suave and wonderfully fine-grained on entry, then a little lean in the middle owing to firm but harmonious acidity. Finishes with lingering sweet notes of cherry and currant.HK$5,390.00 -

The 2016 Château Péby Faugères is flat-out awesome and easily up with the finest Saint-Emilion out there. Incredible notes of ripe black cherries, truffly earth, iron, graphite, and spicy oak all emerge on the nose, and it's full-bodied, with a deep, layered mid-palate, sweet tannins, and incredible length on the finish. It's made in a pure, slightly modern, nicely oaked style yet has incredible limestone-like character, flawless balance, and riveting purity of fruit. It's a gem that flirts with perfection. It's still a baby and has another two decades or more of prime drinking.HK$7,735.00 -

In the same ballpark as the 2016, 2018, and 2020, the 2019 Château Péby Faugères is another full-bodied, deep, richer Saint-Emilion that has incredible purity, voluptuous, layered aromas and flavors of black raspberries, cherries, leather, and truffly earth, perfectly integrated oak, and a remarkable sense of limestone-like minerality on the finish. The balance, as well as its richness paired with elegance, is something to behold. Drink this sensational, sexy, straight-up heavenly Saint-Emilion over the coming two decades.HK$5,275.00 -

Lastly, the 2020 Château Péby Faugères tastes like the blood of Merlot with its inky, full-bodied, yet incredibly pure profile. Pure cassis, ripe black cherries, graphite, spring flowers, and truffly, floral notes all emerge from the glass, and it hits the palate with a seamless, silky, powerful, yet still incredibly elegant profile. It shows the more inward, serious style of the vintage, has building tannins, and a salty, iron-like character, and it has the class to benefit from 4-6 years of bottle age and evolve gracefully over the following two decades or more.HK$4,365.00 -

An eye-opener. This really takes off at the end, with blackberry, tapenade, chocolate powder and cedar. It’s full-bodied and tight with solid tannins that are fine and less velvety than previous vintages. Less new wood than in the past. Crunchy. 100% merlot.HK$5,275.00 -
