  • Philippe-Le-Hardi Mercurey Les Bois de Lalier Blanc 2022 (6x75cl)

Philippe-Le-Hardi Mercurey Les Bois de Lalier Blanc 2022 epitomises the elegant finesse of Burgundy's renowned Côte Chalonnaise. Crafted from meticulously selected Chardonnay grapes grown in the Les Bois de Lalier vineyard, this 2022 vintage benefits from the region's limestone-rich soil and optimal climate. Under the expert stewardship of Philippe Le Hardi, the grapes undergo cold fermentation in stainless steel tanks to preserve their vibrant acidity and delicate fruit character. The wine is then aged sur lie for several months, enhancing its complexity and adding subtle notes of brioche and mineral undertones. On the palate, it offers a harmonious balance of citrus flavours, white peach, and a refreshing minerality, culminating in a long, graceful finish. This exquisite blanc is a testament to Philippe-Le-Hardi's commitment to quality and terroir expression, making it a distinguished choice for discerning wine enthusiasts.

  • Philipponnat Blanc de Blancs Grand Blanc Brut 2008 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (93)

Disgorged in September 2018 with 4.5 grams per liter dosage, the 2008 Extra Brut Grand Blanc is composed of vins clairs matured in barrel with blocked malolactic and vins clairs matured in tank that were allowed to complete malolactic. Exhibiting aromas of lemon oil, warm bread, hazelnut cream, wet stones and smoke, it's medium to full-bodied, ample and nicely concentrated, with a racy spine of acidity, a fine mousse and delicately chalky structure, concluding with a long and pure finish.

This producer’s location and vineyards on the Montagne de Reims mean it is very much a Pinot Noir house. Full and concentrated, this Champagne sums up the richness possible from the grape. It is dry, textured and ready to age further. Drink from 2023.

  • Philipponnat Clos des Goisses Brut 1980 (1x75cl)

    Vinous (94)

A wonderfully complete wine, the 1980 Clos des Goisses has it all. Here the Pinot is quite expressive in both the wine's flavor profile and weight. Rich, powerful and vinous, the 1980 is also a great example of how Goisses ages. I have always been partial to this vintage, as 1980 was the first Clos des Goisses I tasted. Today, many years later, it's great to see the wine is still in great shape. Although the 1980 won't hold on forever, it drinks beautifully today and should continue to deliver considerable pleasure over the next decade or so. Disgorged February 2007.
  • Philipponnat Clos des Goisses Brut 1982 (1x75cl)
  • Philipponnat Clos des Goisses Brut 1993 (1x150cl)

    Vinous (93)

The 1993 Clos des Goisses Late-Disgorged is weighty, powerful and ample in the glass, with tremendous textural resonance and tons of character. Lemon confit, petrol, Mirabelle, spice, ginger, pineapple and cured meats give the 1993 a decidedly wild, exotic personality, and yet all the elements are impeccably balanced. Moreover, the 1993 expresses that magical ability of Clos des Goisses to show quite a bit of nuance with age and yet retains terrific freshness. The silky, creamy finish adds to the wine’s sheer appeal. The blend is 2/3rds Pinot Noir and 1/3rd Chardonnay. Dosage is 4.5 grams per liter. Disgorged: July, 2019.

  • Philipponnat Clos des Goisses Brut 1997 (1x75cl)

    James Suckling (98)

This has an enticing nose of pastries, apricots, raspberries, rhubarb, baklava and manuka honey. Lemon curd, mushrooms and marmalade, too. Opens up beautifully, rich yet fresh and vibrant, with tight and energetic bubbles. Late release. Drink or hold.

  • Philipponnat Clos des Goisses Brut 1998 (6x150cl)

    Vinous (95)

(disgorged April, 2008) Bright yellow-gold with a slow stream of tiny bubbles. Expressive aromas of orange rind, pear, marzipan, lemon thyme and toasted bread, plus a hint of brown butter. Very rich and palate-coating, offering sweet orchard and pit fruit flavors and complicating notes of bitter citrus pith and smoky minerals. Quite open, with sexy floral and spice qualities on the long, sweet, nutty finish. I've little doubt that this Champagne will continue to age for years to come but there's plenty going on right now to warrant broaching a bottle if you have more than one.
  • Philipponnat Clos des Goisses Brut 1999 (3x150cl)

    Wine Advocate (95)

The 1999 Clos des Goisses flows from the glass with the essence of minerals, chalk, smoke, ash, white peaches, pears, flowers and sweet oak. This is a muscular, powerful wine that needs serious bottle age to come around, yet it possesses striking clarity and detail in its aromatics and flavors. Clos des Goisses is one of the most rewarding wines to drink when mature, and I have no doubt this will be another splendid version. This refined, sumptuous wine is not to be missed. Clos des Goisses is 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay, and 30% of the wine was fermented in oak. This bottle was disgorged in March 2007. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2024.

  • Philipponnat Clos des Goisses Brut 2000 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (94)

(made from two-thirds pinot noir and one-third chardonnay; disgorged June, 2010): Yellow-gold. Heady aromas of poached pear, floral honey, quince paste and musky flowers, with a smoky mineral overtone. Rich but energetic and focused, offering mineral-laced orchard and pit fruit flavors and suggestions of tarragon, vanilla and brioche. Plays power off finesse, finishing with excellent clarity and stony persistence. The 2003 version of this Champagne is showing a flamboyant streak right now, with abundant flavors of orchard and pit fruits and a sexy vanilla nuance. I'd enjoy this lush, expansive wine over the next few years but have no doubt that it will continue to age positively. The 2001 Clos des Goisses, which I sampled three times this year, is showing an exotic, nutty character and seems fully mature, to my taste. I suspect that the nuttiness will become more prominent over the coming years and that's a quality that gives me pause when considering this Champagne's aging curve. Fans of that style will demur, of course, and might enjoy this bottling even more in another five years or so.
  • Philipponnat Clos des Goisses Brut 2002 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (96)

The 2002 Clos des Goisses dazzles from start to finish. A huge, tropical Goisses, the 2002 pulses with exotic, tropical fruit wedded to a real sense of textural vinosity. Honey, almonds and yellow stone fruits are some of the many notes that blossom in the glass. The 2002 is just entering the very early part of its plateau of maturity, but it will continue to develop further nuance over the next 20-30 years. The level of complexity and overall sumptuousness make the 2002 nearly impossible to resist today. Disgorged November 2011.

  • Philipponnat Clos des Goisses Brut 2004 (3x150cl)

    Vinous (97)

The 2004 Clos des Goisses is dense and powerful in the glass, with all of the pure, unbridled energy that has always been such a signature here. Hints of lemon peel, mint, spice and crushed rocks emerge with time in the glass, but, despite its considerable beauty and unquestioned pedigree, the 2004 is frankly years away from delivering the full Clos des Goisses experience. Disgorged February 2013.

  • Philipponnat Clos des Goisses Brut 2005 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (94)

The 2005 Clos des Goisses is easily one of the wines of what turned out to be a complicated vintage. Just beginning to show the early signs of aromatic complexity, the 2005 graces the palate with the essence of candied lemon, almonds, chamomile, apricot and wild herbs. The 2005 is not the most complex or pedigreed Goisses, but it drinks beautifully today and should continue to deliver pleasure for another 15-20 years, perhaps more.

  • Philipponnat Clos des Goisses Brut 2006 (1x300cl)

    Vinous (96)

The 2006 Clos des Goisses is stellar, but it is also going to need quite a bit of time to come into its own. Powerful and ample in the best of the Goisses style, the 2006 hits the palate with serious intensity. Orchard fruits, lemon oil, white flowers and almonds are some of the many notes that open up in the glass, but, as is often the case with young Goisses, it is the wine's gravitas that is front and center. Even with all of its overtness, though, the 2006 retains striking, crystalline purity. I imagine the 2006 will reward Champagne lovers with many decades of truly exceptional drinking. The only thing the 2006 needs is time. The question is: How much?

  • Philipponnat Clos des Goisses Brut 2007 (3x150cl)

    Burghound (95)

This is a wine that I have followed since its release and like a number of 2007s, it took its sweet time to add depth and flesh out as it was exceptionally tightly wound, austere and seemingly just effervescence and citrus-tinged wine. Time however has worked its magic and this is much, indeed much, much more interesting than it was with elegant, airy and pure aromas of green apple, soft yeast, plenty of citrus and a Chablis-like shellfish and iodine hint. The racy and still almost painfully intense middle weight flavors are crisp, bone-dry and palate etching as the mousse is firm but fine, all wrapped in a mildly austere and wonderfully long finish. This exceptionally stylish effort could be enjoyed now or held for another 3 to 5 years first. Excellent and a classic vintage for Clos des Goisses. I would add that the 2007 doesn’t quite match the 1996 for sheer quality but it’s every bit as good as the 1998 and 2000 version.

The 2008 Clos des Goisses is just as impressive today as it has always been. Rich, dense and explosive, the 2008 exists in three dimensions, with remarkable textural depth and vertical intensity to burn. Clos des Goisses is notoriously slow to develop. Readers who can be patient will be treated to a spectacular Champagne. The blend is 55% Chardonnay and 45% Pinot Noir, which makes the 2008 a rare Clos des Goisses that favors Chardonnay. • Philipponnat Clos des Goisses Brut 2009 (1x300cl)

    Wine Advocate (97)

Philipponnat’s 2009 Clos des Goisses, disgorged in March 2022 with a dosage of 4.5 grams per liter, stands out as one of the most successful releases in recent memory. It opens with a deep bouquet of ripe pear, peach and early-blooming white flowers, mingling with nuances of red berry fruit. On the palate, it is full-bodied, profound and textural, supported by a racy spine of acidity and culminating in a long, sapid finish. While 2009 may have once seemed a warm, solar vintage, it no longer appears that extreme when considered alongside the increasingly warm years Champagne has experienced in more recent times. Reaching 12.8% alcohol, the wine exhibits a more elegant and harmonious profile compared to the drier, warmer 2015 and the riper, slightly more precocious 2012. The blend consists of 61% Pinot Noir and 39% Chardonnay, with approximately 37% of the wine vinified in oak.

There is a wealth of great French wine outside the ‘Big 4’ (Bordeaux, Burgundy, Champagne and Rhone). The Languedoc Roussillon with it’s herby, robust Mediterranean reds, Provence with its pale, vinous roses, Loire with its flinty Sauvignons, crunchy Cabernet Francs, and endlessly fascinating Chenins, Jura with its old fashioned curiosities… the list goes on. Tradition and terroir are the veins running through them all, making French wines still the most emulated in the world.
