Vinous (90-92)Medium red. Expressive aromas of purple fruits, violet, licorice and spices. Precise and energetic but a bit youthfully clenched; perhaps a bit hardened by the sulfur addition two weeks before my tasting but without any rough edges. Finishes savory and long, with dusty tannins and very good cling. These vines now average 28 years of age, noted Groffier, and produced just 14 hectoliters per hectare in 2010. |

The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, plenty of juicy red fruit laid over fine structure, plus there is fine mineralité surfacing on the finish to complete to a very well-made Chambolle-Musigny from Nicolas Groffier. Vinous (93)The 2015 Chambolle-Musigny Les Hauts Doix 1er Cru has a more compact, high-toned bouquet than Drouhin’s Chambolle premier cru tasted alongside, with darker fruit (blueberry and bilberry) complementing the red fruit. The palate is sweet and rounded on the entry and quite candied in style, but displays perfect acidity. There is plenty of substance toward the finish, as well as the roundness one seeks in Chambolle-Musigny. A touch of spiciness develops with aeration .This is a marvelous premier cru. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin and a fine bead of acidity. It is not the most complex Chambolle-Musigny, but it feels approachable and flatters the senses. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95)The second vineyard to be picked, 50% whole bunch vinification, with 25% new wood. This is a draining sandy soil which gets direct sun only in the morning, so not hot but dry. 12.8% alcohol. A dense dark black purple. For the moment the whole bunches speak quite loudly. Dark fruit, rather exciting, shows the oak a bit, not all together but there is a lot of wine here. When this does come together it will be rather impressive. Tasted: December 2021 |

Nicolas Groffier noted that his family used to vinify Sentiers for power, like our Amoureuses, but that he has cut back on extraction. Still, this is a strong wine in 2012. |

The Languedoc Roussillon with it’s herby, robust Mediterranean reds, Provence with its pale, vinous roses, Loire with its flinty Sauvignons, crunchy Cabernet Francs, and endlessly fascinating Chenins, Jura with its old fashioned curiosities… the list goes on. Tradition and terroir are the veins running through them all, making French wines still the most emulated in the world.
