Liger-Belair feels that owing to low yields, many Nuits-Saint-Georges '16s from vineyards on the north side of the town are more burly and masculine than usual. |

Wine Advocate (93)Smoky black tea, beef bouillon, raw venison, biter cherry pit and ripe blackberry make for a striking nose to Liger-Belair's 2009 Nuits-St.-Georges Les St.-Georges. Firm in feel, and with its dense meat and bitter-edged black fruit underlain by a sensation of crushed stone, this manages to avoid austerity – and, more remarkably, opacity – thanks to its primary juicy freshness; sweet, high-toned inner-mouth esters suggestive of distilled fruits; and to a wealth of mineral nuances (marine, crustacean, peaty) that manage to shine through in a penetrating and resplendent finish. I would not plan to revisit it for a couple of years, and expect it will be worth following for at least 8-10. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95-97)Deep purple more than black, the nose is classier and more together than the Clos Vougeot. Actually this is brilliant as soon as the nose starts to open. Wow! This has all the classic depth of Les St-Georges but it seems to have a Vosne side heady joy as well. A huge glorious mouthful, a little white pepper tingle (45% whole bunches), but a royal quality of deep dark raspberry fruit, sensational finish. Easily the best I have ever tasted here. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-95)Three tanks were made, two destemmed and the third with 70% stems, averaging out to 20% approximately, with tanks of differing sizes. A medium deep crimson ruby. Very appealing on the nose, neither too ripe nor too concentrated, and the red and black fruit on the palate is livened up by a surprising salinity – squid ink suggests Thibault, not a descriptor that really enthuses me, but I think this is going to be a first class Les St-Georges. The Languedoc Roussillon with it’s herby, robust Mediterranean reds, Provence with its pale, vinous roses, Loire with its flinty Sauvignons, crunchy Cabernet Francs, and endlessly fascinating Chenins, Jura with its old fashioned curiosities… the list goes on. Tradition and terroir are the veins running through them all, making French wines still the most emulated in the world.
