This has a touch more blush in its color than its counterpart. It's also showing some reduction so less perfumed at the moment. There's a strong flint note followed by pretty rose petals then sweet strawberries. The texture is marvellous, feeling of pure silk. Medium-bodied with integrated lift and soign tannins, this is seriously stylish. 2022-40 |

It has another light, airy nose, red cherries and a touch of tertiary scents, missing some of the vigour the 2020 exuded last year. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins. This is very pure, a tad more weight than the Echézeaux, nicely judged acidity with hints of white pepper and thyme towards the nicely proportioned finish. This should give 12-15 years of drinking pleasure. |

Vinous (90-92)The 2018 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Cras 1er Cru comes from 0.38 hectares of vine. It offers light, slightly tertiary red berry fruit on the nose, cut from a similar cloth to some of Lamarche’s Vosne-Romanées, so that I would have liked a little more appellation character to come through. The palate is medium-bodied with bright red berry fruit laced with soy and orange peel. It builds nicely in the mouth toward a vivid, slightly meaty finish and quite a long aftertaste. Fine, although I hope the aromatics find a louder voice once in bottle. |

Vinous (92-94)The 2019 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Cras 1er Cru is a little more high-toned on the nose than Lamarche’s Vosne Premier Crus, offering morello cherry, raspberry, rose petal and blackberry scents interlaced with sous-bois and tobacco. The palate is very smooth and sensual with pure red fruit and very well-judged acidity. Sleek and stylish. This is one of my picks from the domaine this vintage. |

Wine Advocate (88)Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Vosne Romanée 1er Cru Les Chaumes from Domaine François Lamarche was showing some volatility on the nose, though nothing to get too worried about. Hints of cherry liqueur here with a slight reductive metallic note. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly dry tannin and some hardness deriving from wood tannins on the finish. Perhaps bottle age will help this? Then again, it never quite got out of the blocks when I tasted it in barrel. |

Vinous (95)The 2017 Vosne-Romanée Les Malconsorts 1er Cru has a well-defined bouquet of dark berry fruit, oyster shell, sous-bois and rose petals, intense and fragrant. The harmonious palate is silky-smooth on the entry with finely judged acidity. A subtle touch of spice develops nicely toward the finish, which leaves a persistent, peppery aftertaste. Wine Advocate (88)Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. The Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Les Suchots 2011 is more reserved on the nose than their Chaumées, but there is a touch more complexity, the brambly red and black fruit infused with fine minerality and tension. The palate is smooth and rounded on the entry with a lot of extraction so that it feels plump around the middle. Juicy and pure, what it lacks in complexity is compensated by its saturated tannins and opulent blueberry-tinged finish that is just missing some persistence, cutting away before you have had an opportunity to show your gratitude. |

There is a wealth of great French wine outside the ‘Big 4’ (Bordeaux, Burgundy, Champagne and Rhone). The Languedoc Roussillon with it’s herby, robust Mediterranean reds, Provence with its pale, vinous roses, Loire with its flinty Sauvignons, crunchy Cabernet Francs, and endlessly fascinating Chenins, Jura with its old fashioned curiosities… the list goes on. Tradition and terroir are the veins running through them all, making French wines still the most emulated in the world.
