(from Prissé). This too has that mildly skunky type of reduction that is always a bit concerning as it’s impossible to know for sure if it will dissipate in time. The more mineral-driven, but not finer or denser, flavors exhibit reasonably good length on the mildly tannic, warm and rustic finale. This isn’t for me.

  • Verget, Macon, Pierreclos En Tremblay 2023 (12x75cl)

    Vinous - Neal Martin (90)

The 2023 Mâcon-Pierreclos en Tremblay comes from 80-year-old vines. This is not powerful on the nose, but I like the focus and the soupçon of mineralité that comes through. The palate is well balanced with ample weight and density, less peppery than its peers, the botrytised berries plus 20% new oak barrel lending grip on the finish. One of my favourite cuvées from Verget this year.
  • Verget, Pouilly-Fuisse, Haut de la Roche 2023 (12x75cl)

    Burghound (89)

Pungent aromas of wood toast and moderate reduction completely mask the fruit today. The attractively textured, though not especially dense, flavors do however possess excellent intensity that also suffuses the impressively long finish where a touch of gas is present. As such, between the gas and the reduction, a few minutes in a decanter should help if you’re going to try a bottle young.

  • Versino Chateauneuf Pape Cuvee des Felix 1998 (12x75cl)

    Vinous (89-93)

Deep ruby-red. Huge, roasted nose features maraschino cherry and an exotic hint of apricot; an obvious low-SO2 sample that could be fresher. Powerful, viscous and full-bodied; impressively concentrated but less vibrant today than the above. Just short of heavy, in the way of so many low-acid special cuvees from superripe fruit. Finishes impressively long and powerful, with tannins buried in fruit. My score may prove to be conservative.

Supple and expansive on the palate, showing very good depth and building smokiness. Leaves notes of dark chocolate and vanillin oak behind on the gripping, youthfully tannic finish.
