(1x300cl) 2002Vinous (89)
Pale gold. Tangerine and white peach on the nose, with notes of chalk and cinnamon lending vivacity. Firm and tangy on entry, then gains flesh and sweetness in the middle palate and offers deeper pear and melon qualities. Nicely marries richness and energy, and finishes with good clarity and resonating notes of soft citrus and orchard fruits. I get more energy here than I've seen in many recent bottlings from this house.HK$4,565.00 -

It is quite something to be invited to the launch of Champagne Veuve Clicquot 2008 at Clos des Lambrays, one of the finest grands crus of Burgundy's Côte de Nuits and acquired by LVMH in April 2014. It was rumoured to have paid close to €100m. The Veuve Clicquot 2008 is VC Chef de Caves Dominique Demarville’s first solo vintage. What fascinated him at Lambrays was winemaker Thierry Brouin’s consummate talent in capturing from the red iron-rich soil a wonderfully bright character in the wine- so fresh, rich yet elegant, density and delicacy in magical harmony. The same can be said for my two coups de coeur in Clicquot 2008. --- Veuve Clicquot 2008 (Magnum) --- Shimmering green-gold. Easily up several notches from the bottle. Perfect balance of freshness, ripe acidity and complex vinosity to come. Near perfect wine, patina of seasoned spice of subtle oak. --- Elegant and complex Champagne with plenty of fine mousse and flavours of toast, smoke and roasted fruit notes to balance the fresh acidity. A refined and refreshing fullbodied wine in a gastronomic style with the potential to drink well for many years.HK$4,015.00 -

The intensely-hued NV Extra Brut Rosé Les Monts de Vertus is impressive and quite delicious. Ample and inviting on the palate, the Monts de Vertus possesses notable depth. Dark cherry, kirsch, blood orange and cinnamon all meld together. All the elements fall into place effortlessly with this 100% Pinot Noir done in the saignée style. The combination of intense fruit and low dosage is quite simply beguiling. Dosage is 3 grams per liter. Disgorged: January, 2023.HK$3,790.00 -

The NV Brut Nature Blanc de Blancs Premier Cru is another highlight in this range from Veuve Fourny & Fils. Dried flowers, herbs and dried orchard fruit confer tons of bright, savory intensity to play off the wine's decidedly phenolic feel. There's terrific palate presence and structure here, not to mention the complexity to make this an extremely versatile Champagne for the dinner table. I loved it. Lot 72451. Disgorged: November 2024.HK$3,585.00 -
(6x75cl) NVCrafted by Veuve Fourny, a top-tier artisanal producer in Vertus, the Veuve Fourny Grande Reserve Brut 1er Cru NV NV is a blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Precision and harmony are found in this champagne, primarily derived from Premier Cru vineyards. Vinified in stainless steel, with an admixture of older oak casks and partial malolactic fermentation, the wine acquires a delicate, sophisticated base—further matured on lees for 3 years, imparting a rich complexity. Its lush bouquet reveals fruitful notes of ripe apples, toasted brioche, and a hint of mineral undertones. Bold without complexity loss, it exhibits a fine balance between acidity and freshness. Developing added depth with age, the Veuve Fourny Grande Reserve Brut 1er Cru NV NV leaves an indelible mark in one's wine journey—an authentic reflection of Vertus terroir.

Quite one-dimensional, with soft, ripe plummy fruit, and some oaky aromas, the 1976 has average concentration, no noticeable tannin, and a pleasant, yet uninteresting finish. Anticipated maturity: Now--may be in decline. Last tasted, 7/83.HK$5,705.00 -

Not yet fully mature, this wine reveals some amber at the edge as well as a complex, intoxicating nose of cedar, licorice, spice box, black currants, and cherries. While medium to full-bodied with sweet tannins, and beautiful concentration, it appears to me that more recent vintages are stronger and denser than the 1982. Nevertheless, it is a beauty that can be drunk now and over the next 15-16 years. Release price: ($175.00/case)HK$37,550.00 -

The 1989 Vieux Château Certan has long been one of my favorite wines of that decade. The bouquet shows no signs of relinquishing that title with gorgeous black truffle, bay leaf, warm gravel and briary scents that are simply beautifully defined. The palate is medium-bodied with a fine line of acidity, warm earth on the entry, leather and truffle, great depth here with sublime precision on the finish, which is bridled with hints of mushroom and cloves. Maybe this is reaching its peak? Then again, it shows absolutely no signs of reaching the end of its plateau. This is nothing short of a wondrous Pomerol from Alexandre Thienpont. Tasted January 2016.HK$25,740.00 -
(12x75cl) 1990Wine Advocate (92)
The 1990 Vieux Château Certan is drinking exceptionally well at the moment, although it does not quite possess the charm of the 1989. There is more primary fruit here than the previous vintage: black cherries, iodine and boysenberry, mingling with clove and tarry aromas that emerge with time. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin. There is similar depth here to the 1989 and yet the finish does not quite deliver the same delineation, although that cheeky dab of kirsch is pure delight. This is a great VCC, although I did notice that over a period of an hour, it fails to keep pace with the ever-meliorating 1989. Tasted January 2016.HK$34,180.00 -

Disappointing following bottling, this green-flavored, herbaceous, medium-bodied wine exhibits spice and red fruit notes, but it tastes underripe and meagerly-endowed. Anticipated maturity: now-2006.HK$12,515.00 -

Wonderful fruit and texture. Best VCC I have ever tasted. Dark-colored, and bubbling over with blackberry and raspberry character with undertones of chocolate, mint and vanilla. Full-bodied, with very velvety tannins and a long, flavorful finish. 3,800 cases made.HK$20,590.00 -
