The 2015 Lagrange, the Pomerol version not Saint Julien, is a blend of 96% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc. It has a simple bouquet, perhaps a little monotone compared to its peers, but clean and fresh. The palate is medium-bodied with light, grainy tannin. It is nicely balanced, not a deep Pomerol or complex, although the finish slips down the throat easily. I’ve criticized many previous vintages of this Pomerol, but the 2019 Lagrange gives notice of improvements afoot. Now in bottle, it has a very pleasant and quite concentrated bouquet of black cherries, raspberry coulis and light truffle scents laced with blood orange. The palate is medium-bodied with quite a velvety entry and a ripe, slightly confit, spicy finish. The flagship from a 7-acre parcel in the estate vineyard, the 2016 Cahors Le Pigeonnier is another Pomerol look-alike with its beautiful bouquet of black cherries, blueberries, damp earth, white chocolate, and exotic spices. As with all these 2016s, it’s a ripe, powerful, opulent wine that doesn’t pull any punches, yet always stays balanced, elegant, and remarkably fresh. Made from 100% Malbec aged two years in new French oak, it builds beautifully with time in the glass, has a deep, layered mid-palate, and a blockbuster finish. It’s possibly the finest Cahors I’ve ever tasted and would pass undetected in a blind lineup of top Napa Cabernets.
