Burghound (87-90)

A slightly more elegant nose freely offers up its blend of plum, crushed anise and a similar touch of humus-tinged earth. The lilting, precise and even finer middle weight flavors possess a beguiling texture that carries over to the moderately austere but not really rustic finale that is shaped by firm but relatively fine tannins. This should repay mid-term keeping of up to a year yet be approachable after only 4 to 6 years.

Vinous (87-89)

The 2017 Nuits Saint-Georges Village comes from four parcels and is matured in one-third new oak. It has a perfumed bouquet of bilberry and wild strawberry infused with violets notes; a touch of kirsch develops with aeration. The harmonious palate is medium-bodied with sappy red berry fruit, nicely judged acidity and a pastille-like finish that lingers in the mouth. Fine.

Burghound (87-89)

(from Champ Perdrix, Aux Athets, En la Perrière Noblot, Les Lavières and Bas de Combe). Notes of ripe wild cherry, black pinot fruit and humus-tinged earth lead to lilting, precise and energetic flavors that contrast with the moderately rustic and robust finale that is very Nuits in character.

Vinous (87-89)

The 2019 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Chaliots comes across rather oaky on the nose and this occludes the fruit expression more than it does in the Village Cru. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins, grippy and quite masculine toward the finish. Hopefully it will manifest more refinement once in bottle.

Vinous (86-88)

The 2021 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Chaliots has a light nose that like many wines from this appellation, is missing a bit of fruit intensity. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, slightly chalky in texture, moderate weight. What I would like is more flair on the finish, but it's not that kind of vintage. Just a bit conservative.

Vinous - Neal Martin (88-90)

The 2023 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Chaliots comes from a single parcel located just below the Clos des Porets. This is quite high-toned on the nose with licorice scents infusing the black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with a rich and toasty entry and some dry tannins on the back palate. Again, this just needs that oak to be better assimilated, hence my prudent score.

Vinous - Neal Martin (91-94)

The 2023 Richebourg Grand Cru takes time to unfold on the nose and never quite reaches the heights of the previous vintage. The palate is medium-bodied with another toasty entry from the 100% new oak. This has fine weight and quite a lot of wood tannins, but it's difficult to discern the vineyard. This is a difficult Richebourg to read at the moment.

Wine Advocate (88-90)

The 2016 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Brûlées has a reticent bouquet that demanded a lot of coaxing from the glass. It remained a little taciturn with broody blackberry and raspberry scents, confit cherries emerging with time in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin and a fine bead of acidity. It clams up a little toward the second half that is driven by the wood tannins at the moment. As I remarked last year apropos the 2015, I wish the new oak would allow the great terroir to have its say.

Vinous (90-92)

The 2017 Vosne-Romanée Aux Brûlées 1er Cru, matured in 50% new oak, has a well defined black cherry, violet petal and iodine bouquet that feels nicely integrated with the wood. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, a fine bead of acidity, gentle grip and a slightly toasted finish. Certainly this is one of Gros’s better wines in 2017.

Birthed from the famous Vosne-Romanée appellation in Côte de Nuits, its vineyards stand testament to superior French viticulture. Carefully hand-selected grapes are respectfully aged in oak barrels for 18 months, granting it a sophisticated, well-structured palate.

Spearheading this mastery is the Michel Gros family, renowned wine-growers since the 19th century. Their adherence to low yield practices gifts this Pinot Noir a concentrated and defined character. Vinous (90-92)

The 2021 Vosne-Romanée Aux Brûlées 1er Cru has a very well defined nose with vivid dark cherry and raspberry fruit, touches of crushed stone and rose petals. Wonderful focus. The palate is medium-bodied with a bit of oak to be subsumed on the entry. Good fruit concentration considering the growing season, quite savoury towards the finish without the length of this Premier Cru's top performers. Yet there is something intriguing about this Aux Brûlée… I will be prudent with my assessment for now.

Vinous - Neal Martin (90-92)

The 2023 Vosne-Romanée Aux Brûlées 1er Cru has quite an expressive nose, with black cherries, fresh fig and light licorice scents gradually emerging—though its 50% new oak is quite vocal. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, finely balanced with (again) the new oak shaping the mid-palate and finish. There is a good Aux Brûlées here, though you'll have to wait for the oak to be assimilated.

Wine Advocate (90-91)

The 2013 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Clos des Réas, which like all Michel’s premier crus sees 50% new oak, has a slightly higher-toned bouquet compared with the Aux Brûlées: small dark cherries, cassis and iodine. The palate is medium-bodied with a pleasing, grainy texture. Here, the dense black fruit mask the structure underneath that gives this a Malconsorts personality. It does not have enormous length at the moment but it is nicely focused.
