It is well-known that the world's best value Sauvignon Blanc comes from New Zealand but the Zephyr Sauvignon Blanc 2020 is a wine that has really taken our breath away.
Receiving 95 points from Decanter's Cameron Douglas MS and achieving the joint-highest score in their recent New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc: 20 from 2020 report but only costing just £10 per bottle IB, wine of this quality shouldn't cost this little..
Zephyr is the brainchild of the award-winning Marlborough winemaker Ben Glover. Previously making wines for big names such as Wither Hills, he began his own winemaking project in 2007 and immediately created a stir on the international wine scene. Tim Atkin MW has even written 'if I were to choose one Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc at the moment it would be Zephyr', rhapsodising over his wine saying it is about 'as good as Marlborough gets'..
This 2020 edition is a 'delicious and complete' (DC) Sauvignon Blanc. Aiming to keep as much of this freshness as possible, the resulting wine unleashes a 'floral, mineral, complex bouquet of peach blossom, apple' on the nose, whilst the palate is equalling 'enticing and complete with a lick of sea salt, mineral and blossoms on the finish' (DC). While this is a wine made to be enjoyed now, it will cellar happily up to 2026..
Sourced from the Kerseley Estate Single Vineyard at Dillons Point, the wine is cool fermented, chilled and then racked in the following springtime to retain its crisp freshness and acidity..
2020 is definitely a vintage to go in heavy on New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, as Douglas highlights, nearly all the wines he has tried have 'punched above their weight (some well above) in terms of concentration, purity, balance and complexity'. At only £60 per case IB, there is no better option than the Zephyr Sauvignon Blanc 2020..
