A New Name to Remember from Anjou… Domaine Belargus 2020s
With the genuinely awe-inspiring endorsement given above by white wine expert Stephan Reinhardt from the Wine Advocate, it should be clear to wine enthusiasts that they should seek out Domaine Belargus wines sooner rather than later.
Domaine Belargus has a rich history from the renowned wine expert Jo Pithon in Anjou. But it was Ivan Massonat, who also owns a part of Philippe Pacalet in Burgundy, who breathed new life into the estate since the acquisition in 2018. Since then, Ivan assembled an all-star team including Adrien Moreau (previously from Cheval Blanc, Haut-Brion and Roederer) and Guy Bossard (Biodynamic consultant). Jo Pithon, the previous owner, remains a valued consultant. The combination of skill and experience within the team promises a bright future for Domaine Belargus.
As the leading biodynamic winery in the Loire Valley, based in Anjou, Domaine Belargus aims to express the beauty of Chenin Blanc. Encompassing 24 hectares of vines, all dedicated to the noble grape in the Loire, these vines are found in some of the region's most renowned terroirs, including Quarts-de-Chaume (the Grand Cru equivalent in the region) and two monopoles, Coteau des Treilles and Clos des Ruchères.
Today, we are pleased to present the latest vintage from Domaine Belargus. Although yet to be scored by any critics, these wines are guaranteed to offer exceptional value given their truly exceptional terroir and legendary team. Be the first to secure these glittering new wines that are still accessible and affordable.
This selection includes four dry Chenin Blancs, all produced to express their quintessence through a single-plot approach. Derived from the Quarts de Chaume, Quarts, Rouères, and Veau are all interesting dry Chenins representing the different facets of this prestigious area. Although sourced from the same appellation, these are three thrillingly different whites. Quarts provides finesse and length, Rouères epitomizes solar power with roundness, complexity, and richness, and Veau sings with incredible mineral content and intensity.
Notably, a special new wine is available in the line-up – Gordone. The value star in this selection, this is the best option for clients who wish to get a glimpse into the mythical Chenin world of Domaine Belargus.

Decanter (96)This is a dry wine made from 3ha of the sweet-wine vineyard, Quarts de Chaume. The inviting honeyed, toasty aromas precede a palate with layers of flavour, alternating ripe yellow peaches and mineral intensity, with perfectly balanced, lemony acidity. The well-integrated oak supports rather than dominates, even at this early stage of the wine's life. Lovely now, this will last and last. The finish is very long, honeyed and sweet-and-sour. This is a wine that has everything. I love the bitter notes that recall the great botrytised whites of Chaume. The wine is completely dry; the structure is carried by the power of the schist soils that give this uniquely characterful Chenin its sumptuous, honeyed, saline, bitter deliciousness. |
