As the Super Tuscan wine category has grown and developed over the last 50 years, a few themes have developed.

Firstly, Tuscany has proved to be capable of making truly amazing Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot; Masseto, Sassicaia and Solaia are testament to that fact, but also that Tuscany creates a more unique expression of Syrah but it is ultimately harder to tame.

When a producer is able to combine all three in an 'absolutely gorgeous' wine, in the words of Vinous's Antonio Galloni, Italian wines lovers have a real treat on their hands, and this is what one gets with Le Cinciole's Camalaione 2016.

The Cabernet, Merlot and Syrah combination is 'an approach that works so well' at Le Cinciole, and with 95 points from Vinous, this 2016 Camalaione is a 'worthy follow up to the 2015' (AG). While it is still tightly wound like many of the well-structured top 2016 Tuscan releases, it is is nevertheless already 'wonderfully alluring' (AG). 'Silky and sleek' (AG) on the palate, notes of inky dark fruit, spice, new leather, licorice, menthol and dried herbs keep emerging with more time in the glass.

Founded in 1991, when Luca and Valeria Orsini left their jobs in Milan to follow their winemaking dream in Tuscany, Le Cinciole make such brilliant wine that Galloni 'can't recommend them highly enough'. Focusing on sustainable farming practices, having been certified organic back in 2000, and with a minimalist approach in the cellar, they have a surprisingly rare and magic touch for getting the best out of the terroir in the their corner of Panzano in a sustainable manner.

Released at only £195 per case IB, the Camalaione 2016 looks to be an absolute bargain particularly because in terms of quality it stands shoulder to shoulder with the estate's flagship Petresco.
