The 2018 Pernand-Vergelesses Ile de Vergelesses 1er Cru comes from mid-slope, east-facing vines on limestone-clay soils. This offers more clarity and delineation than the Les Vergelesses, with vivid red cherry and crushed strawberry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, quite saline and a little spicier than the Vergelesses, with a longer tail on the finish. This is superb. It does not quite have the charm and crystalline quality of the Aux Fournaux, but is more masculine and structured, with a lovely marine element tincturing the dark berry fruit toward the chalky finish.
