Domaine Denis Mortet
About Domaine Denis Mortet
Arnaud Mortet started working alongside his father, Denis Mortet, in the 1999 vintage of his family’s estate, the iconic Domaine Denis Mortet. Not only was Denis great friends with and mentored by Henri Jayer, but he also got the chance of a lifetime to taste the entire 1991 lineup of Leroy with Lalou Bize Leroy herself. The wines of Denis Mortet are thus inspired by both Jayer and Leroy in terms of both vineyard management and winemaking, precious wisdom that Arnaud inherited when Denis passed away in 2006.
Viniculture
Denis Mortet was one of the most important and influential domaines in the late 20th century and enjoys a cult status. The legend continues with his son Arnaud. Brilliant fruit-driven wines that are bordering on the supernatural. The wines have such a light touch; they seem to fly. Every Mortet wine, even the more rustic Marsannay, can be recognized for its velvety texture.
Apart from the Domaine wines, Arnaud has also started his own négotiant business, naming Arnaud Mortet.

Vinous (92-94)
The 2021 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru is aged in 20% new oak with two-thirds whole bunches (pédicelles). This has a scintillating bouquet with mineral-rich red fruit that bursts from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly candied entry, fine definition, maybe just missing the complexity on the finish that the aromatics deserve? One to watch in bottle.HK$4,045.00 -

(3x75cl) 2018Vinous (92-94)
The 2018 Echézeaux Grand Cru comes from Combe d’Orveau and is shared with Christophe Roumier. It has a very well-defined bouquet of red cherries, wild strawberry and crushed limestone aromas. The cohesive palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and gentle grip toward the finish, which just tapers slightly. Still, this is very fine, if missing a little intellect.HK$29,165.00 -
(1x75cl) 2020Vinous (90-92)
The 2020 Echézeaux Grand Cru, the métayage shared with Christophe Roumier, contains 50% whole bunch and new oak. It has quite an introverted nose at the moment, dark berry fruit, tobacco and light undergrowth aromas coming through with time. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, fine acidity, quite structured for this climat. Maybe it needs a little more flesh on the finish? Let’s see how it turns out in bottle (if I can find one.)HK$11,080.00 -

Vinous (91-93)
The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru includes 30% whole bunch and 60% new oak. It has a clean, well-defined bouquet with sous-bois and black truffle aromas permeating the red berry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fleshy and charming, leading to an elegant, refined, caressing finish. Delicious and probably one of Mortet’s earlier-drinking cuvées.HK$13,190.00 -

Vinous (92)
Bright, moderately saturated medium red. Sexy perfume of raspberry, Asian spices, dried flowers, sandalwood and gentian root opened nicely in the glass. Spicy, fine-grained and vibrant on the palate; not especially sweet or fleshy but surprisingly fresh and easy to drink, showing lovely ripe acidity and excellent retention of fruit. This may not have the thickness of today's Mortet wines but it's just entering its plane of peak maturity. Finishes with fine-grained tannins and terrific spicy length. Arnaud Mortet noted that his father Denis aged this wine entirely in new oak.HK$8,080.00 -

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (91-93)
Good deep red. Enticing aromas of raspberry, mocha and game. Sweet, lush and stuffed with flavor, and yet this also boasts excellent definition and cut. The chewy dark fruit and game flavors convey a strong impression of terroir Finishes pure and long, with dusty tannins and excellent grip for the vintage. But the '07 Champeaux seems even riper.HK$2,770.00 -

(12x75cl) 2008Vinous (93)
The 2008 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaux St.Jacques is a round, seamless wine graced with exquisite inner perfume and tons of nuance. I especially admire the sheer energy here. This is a baby, but beautiful all the same. The vibrant acidity should allow this to age gracefully for many years.HK$31,110.00 -

The 2009 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaux St. Jacques is a huge wine, but it is shutting down in bottle. The 2009 boasts incredible purity and depth in is fruit. Readers will need to be patient with the 2009. The extraordinary, deep finish is but one of the signs that points to the immense pedigree of Lavaux St. Jacques.HK$18,325.00 -
(3x150cl) 2012Vinous (93-95)
The Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaux St.-Jacques takes hold of the palate and never lets up. At once explosive yet inward, the 2012 boasts superb depth and concentration. Today, it comes across as quite raw in its unbridled energy. This should be fabulous once the tannins soften. Sweet, floral notes add an attractive element of lift as the wine opens up in the glass. A wine of volume, the 2012 is going to need at least a few years to come together. Arnaud Mortet gave this fruit a few extra days on the vine to achieve more phenolic ripeness. The results speak for themselves.HK$19,835.00 -
(1x150cl) 2013Wine Advocate (92-94)
From 50-year-old vines that usually yield a generous 40 hectoliters per hectare, or thereabouts, the 2013 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux St Jacques has a very succinct and focused bouquet with mineral notes interwoven throughout the black cherry, blueberry and iodine scents. The palate is medium-bodied and is showing some of the 60% new oak at the moment, although there is sufficient fruit to absorb it. This has fine symmetry and focus with quite a long, tender finish. This is a sublime Gevrey-Chambertin to enjoy over the ensuing two decades, possibly more.HK$5,275.00 -

Vinous (93+)
(70% new oak; 15% vendange entier): Deep, bright red. Deep, smoky scents of dark raspberry, game and minerals. Juicy and very intense but youthfully imploded, conveying the sappiness of the vintage in spades. A wonderfully taut, mineral-driven Lavaux with a sappy, saline character to its dark berry fruit. Finishes rich and firmly tannic, with terrific lingering perfume.HK$13,310.00 -

The 2015 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux Saint-Jacques from Domaine Denis Mortet is superb—and further confirmation that this is a wonderful vintage for the Lavaux Saint-Jacques, opening in the glass with a wonderful bouquet of sweet cassis, cherries, rich soil and wood smoke which is still quite youthfully fruit-driven. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, deep and layered, with an authoritative chassis of rich, velvety tannins cloaked in succulent fruit, and a long, sapid finish. This is an ample, even lavish Lavaux Saint-Jacques that nonetheless remains precise and controlled, fully realizing the potential of the vintage.HK$6,460.00 -

The 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux Saint-Jacques was affected by 50% to 60% because of the frost, with 20% whole bunch and 70% new oak. It has a very crystalline bouquet with perfumed dark berry fruit, crushed stone and hints of violet that just deliver stupendous precision. The palate is medium-bodied with a velvety smooth entry and great depth, with the new oak nicely integrated, although maybe I might have chucked a few more stems in the vat on the finish? Still, this has great potential, a magnificent Lavaux Saint-Jacques that will dazzle for many years to come.HK$4,035.00 -
(1x300cl) 2017Vinous (93-95)
The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaux Saint-Jacques 1er Cru matures in 75% new oak and 100% de-stemmed. It has a crisp and well-defined bouquet with black cherries, raspberry and rose petals that unfurls beautifully with time. The palate is medium-bodied with precise tannins, extremely detailed, not long in the mouth with surfeit freshness and tension, and a touch of white pepper on the finish. Sophisticated and classy.HK$11,475.00 -

The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaux Saint-Jacques 1er Cru is completely de-stemmed and raised in 70% new oak. It has a very well-defined bouquet of raspberry and wild strawberry scents, plus pressed rose petal and a touch of orange pith. The palate is very well defined with supple tannins, a perfect line of acidity and a slight confit-like finish. Understated and refined, this will give two decades of drinking pleasure.HK$13,415.00 -
Burghound (92-94)
(Sweet Spot Outstanding) Admirably discreet wood influence can be found on the markedly cooler and more restrained yet wonderfully diverse aromas of various dark berries, plum, violet, leather and whispers of the sauvage. There is excellent volume to the dense, powerful and mineral-driven big-bodied flavors that flash a taut muscularity on the youthfully austere, lengthy and expressly built-to-age finale. This is a ripe but classically style LSJ that should amply reward extended keeping.HK$2,640.00 -

The 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaux Saint-Jacques 1er Cru includes one-third whole bunches and one-third new oak. Again, this is elegant and pure on the nose, beautifully defined with a Rousseau-like personality. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, very expressive yet understated. This doesn't need to boast. It has an effortless quality, fanning out wonderfully towards the finish. An outstanding Lavaux Saint-Jacques.HK$17,970.00 -

The 2011 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Champeaux is all about subtlety and grace. Not quite as juicy as the 1er Cru, the Champeaux is built on a linear, energetic frame. Silky, aromatic and lifted, the 2011 impresses for its balance and class. Hints of cinnamon, savory herbs and violets are woven into the close.HK$29,280.00
