Domaine Ghislaine Barthod
Domaine Ghislaine Barthod
If you have the idea that Chambolle Musigny is a “feminine” wine, then Ghislaine Barthod's wines will not disappoint – delicate, pure and perfumed fruit with a core of intense minerality that will age beautifully over the decades. We call Ghislaine Barthod “The Queen of Chambolle”. Her cellar may be humble but her wines are full of splendour and charm.

Vinous (91-93)The 2021 Chambolle-Musigny Aux Beaux Bruns 1er Cru has an attractive nose, a mélange of red and black fruit, sous-bois, crushed stone and rose petals. It displays more vigour than the Chambolle-Charmes. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red cherry and strawberry fruit, desiccated orange peel and white pepper. Not complex yet it demonstrates more length than some of the other cuvées. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (92-94)The 2023 Chambolle-Musigny Aux Beaux Bruns 1er Cru has a deeper, richer, more tertiary nose than the preceding Aux Combottes. Touches of brown spice emerge with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with gentle grip, good structure and complexity. This is a little sauvage and savory toward the lingering finish. It's not quite up there with the superlative 2022, but it will give 15 to 20 years of drinking pleasure. |

Vinous (92)Bright red-ruby. Subtly perfumed, very complex aromas of raspberry, strawberry, minerals, red licorice and exotic hints of apricot and grapefruit. The biggest and sweetest of these '96s; really lush and full, combining superb lingering sweetness with a large structure. The even tannins are thoroughly enrobed by thick, sappy red fruit. Very impressive. |

Vinous (92+)Deep red. Perfumed aromas of raspberry, cherry, spices and flowers. Offers compelling, penetrating, sweet flavors of small red fruits; initially quite creamy but closed up quickly in the glass. Dense but fresh. Finishes very long, spicy and firm, with suave tannins. Boasts superb fruit today, but this is likely to shut down in the bottle, perhaps for several years. |

Decanter (96)Ghislaine Barthod's two parcels of Charmes are both in the more southerly part of the premier cru and can make one of the more reticent wines in her line up. That's far from the case here though, as this is all about rose petal and summer berry aromas with bright, vivacious acidity, subtle 30% new oak integration and a sweet, lingering finish. |

Wine Advocate (93-95+)One of the more dramatic, gourmand cuvées in the range is the 2019 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Charmes, a stunning wine that bursts with aromas of mulberries, raspberries, violets and rose petals, complemented by hints of loamy soil and baking chocolate. Full-bodied, sumptuous and enveloping, its rich, powdery tannins are entirely cloaked in an ample core of ripe but succulent fruit. I found it hard to resist. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95)A light ruby purple. The bouquet is immediate and very seductive, doing its Charmes thing. Roses and red fruit, especially strawberry. Fills the mouth seductively, continuing through to a fine finish, not too much acidity, refined tannins, very agreeable. And excellent persistence. Drink from 2029-2038. Tasted: November 2023. |

Wine Advocate (90-92)The 2014 Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru les Châtelots has an open, articulate nose that really expresses its terroir -- such fine mineralité here. The palate is strict and linear with dark berry/blackcurrant fruit, plenty of freshness and with a steely, precise finish that perhaps just needs a little more persistence. That may come by the time it is in bottle, but for now, it is the finesse that comes through in barrel. |

Wine Advocate (92-94)Opening in the glass with bright aromas of red berry fruit and orange rind, as well as bass notes of licorice and spices, the 2019 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Chatelots is medium to full-bodied, layered and sumptuously textural, with a pure core of fruit, lively acids and a nicely defined finish. |

Burgundy | 2 | 90-92 (BH) | HK$7,875.00
Burghound (90-92)Exuberantly fresh aromas of essence of various red berries with a broader array of spice notes leads to detailed, even chiseled, lighter weight flavors that exude both energy and minerality on the understated, firm and moderately austere finale. |

Burgundy | 1 | 90-93 (BH) | HK$7,800.00
Burghound (90-93)This is also aromatically really fresh with its blend of dark raspberry, violet and a crushed fennel aromas. The mouthfeel of the slightly richer flavors is also caressing but here there is a subtle minerality on the lacy, balanced and youthfully austere finale that delivers slightly better persistence. Textbook Chatelots. |

Burgundy | 1 | 91+ (VN) | HK$35,915.00
Vinous (91+)Dark red. Deep, ripe aromas of briary black raspberry, dark chocolate and minerals. Very intensely flavored and solidly structured; rather cool dark berry flavors complicated by herbal, briary and menthol hints. Not yet sweet but thick with extract. Rigorous, strong wine, finishing with big but very fine tannins. Offers impressive potential. |

Burgundy | 1 | 94 (VN) | HK$2,290.00
Vinous (94)The 2008 Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras is a prototypical wine for the year. Cool, inward and tense, it shows superb precision in its dark fruit, spices, menthol and tar. The wine literally wraps around the palate with serious intensity and a beguiling personality that is impossible to resist. The finish is pointed and flat-out beautiful. |

Burgundy | 1 | 94+ (VN) | HK$43,070.00
Vinous (94+)(from a yield of about 28 hectoliters per hectare, according to Ghislaine Barthod): Good bright, full red. Very closed yet delicate nose offers scents of black cherry, licorice, fresh herbs and minerals. Soil-driven, saline and sweet, with powerful minerality accentuating the wine's superb concentration. Wonderfully tactile yet light on its feet, this taut, vibrant wine saturates the entire mouth and stains the front teeth. As with Barthod's other 2010s, the tannins are extremely refined. Barthod notes that the 1999 version of this wine is still young, and she believes that this 2010 will take even longer to reach full maturity. |

Decanter (95)Another well sited premier cru, at the same altitude as Bonnes Mares, Ghislaine Barthod's parcel runs to 0.82ha and is one of the bigger cuvées in her cellar. There's a cooling effect from the combe above the village here, producing a wine that's savoury, focussed and taut with a chalky mineral core. It’s unusually fresh for a 2017. |

Burgundy | 1 | 94-96 (WA) | HK$2,870.00
Wine Advocate (94-96)The 2018 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Cras may well prove to be the highpoint of a magical portfolio chez Barthod, and it will be worth a special effort to seek out. Unwinding in the glass with scents of dark berries, raspberries, exotic spices, sweet soil tones and peonies, it's medium to full-bodied, ample and velvety, with a textural attack that segues into a deep and layered mid-palate, underpinned by bright acids and ripe tannins, before concluding with a long, perfumed and exquisitely mineral finish. |
