About Guiseppe Rinaldi
Guiseppe Rinaldi is a revered producer of Barolo in a traditional style. The wines does not pander to fashion and the late Giusepper himself once said he doesn’t want his wines to please easily. Using organic farming and intense study the winery - now run by Giuseppe's daughters Marta and Carlotaa - produces wine that is well perfumed, powerfully structured and slow to mature.

The 2021 Barbera d'Alba is laced with super-ripe red cherry, plum, kirsch and sweet floral notes. Juicy and yet medium in body, the 2021 is a fine choice or drinking now and over the next handful of years.HK$5,985.00 -

At first, I am shocked by the wine’s sheer richness and concentration. The intensity of the flavors is unreal. Iron, smoke, tobacco, leather, game and incense all lend gravitas to this decidedly potent, virile Barolo. I find it pretty difficult to assign a rating to a wine like this. Objectively, the aromatics are more forward than the palate impression. The 1970 is certainly not going to get better with more time in bottle. On the other hand, it is a minor miracle wines from this era have survived to the present day at all given that they were never prized up until 15-20 years ago, maximum. Readers lucky enough to come across the 1970 Rinaldi will be drinking more than just a wine. This bottle represents the history of one of the great families of Barolo and artisan values that are increasingly rare in today’s world.HK$11,145.00 -

The second vintage of the 2020 Barolo Bussia is incredible. Pure and crystalline, with brilliant clarity, it offers notes of cherry cordial, cinnamon candies, alpine herbs, and chalky earth. The palate is energetic and pure, with a subtle luxuriance of ripe, refined tannins and a gamey underlying richness as well as a long-lasting finish. This exceptional wine may supersede the 2021, which I tasted at the estate, but given how things can change dramatically with a year spent in bottle, I wouldn't be surprised to see the inverse over time. Drink over the coming 20 years.HK$36,825.00 -

(12x75cl) 2007Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (93-96)
Good bright, deep red. Crushed blackberry, cassis and violet on the nose, plus notes of game and bitter chocolate; like a blend of serious Nuits-Saint-Georges and Vosne-Romanee. Offers compelling purity, sweetness and depth of fruit, with a powerful acid structure giving the mid-palate a perfumed quality and carrying the juicy fruit through a resounding, rising finish. There's great back-end grip here without any impression of austerity, thanks to the ripeness of the year. This is incredibly primary for juice that's been in barrel for nearly two years, but keep in mind that it won't be bottled for another 18 months. Still, it's likely to be a knockout. (I also tasted a very pure and vibrant sample of Brunate, which was a sour cherry fruit bomb with a liqueur-like ripeness supported by powerful spine, but I was not able to try the barrel of Le Coste.)HK$50,230.00 -

Our first flight showcases two fabulous 2008 Barolos, wines from a vintage that continues to impress. The Barolo Brunate (formerly Brunate-Le Coste) gets most of the attention at Rinaldi. I am curious to see how the Cannubi S. Lorenzo-Ravera is holding up. The answer is very well. Bright, linear and focused, in the style of the year, the Cannubi S. Lorenzo-Ravera is fabulous. It is perhaps a bit more austere than its sibling, but that just adds to its super-classic feel. I love the energy here.HK$10,740.00 -

The 2009 Barolo Cannubi San Lorenzo/Ravera emerges from the glass with sweet red berries, leather, licorice, menthol and sweet spices, all supported by fine, silky tannins. I very much like the sense of energy and vibrancy Rinaldi was able to achieve in 2009, no small feat. The Cannubi San Lorenzo/Ravera has excellent color, freshness, vibrancy, and above all else superb balance. It is easily one of the highlights of the year.HK$37,810.00 -

The 2010 Barolo Tre Tine, a last minute addition, is spectacular. I know, it’s too young, but I couldn’t help myself. These days, Rinaldi’s Barolo Brunate gets most of the attention, but in some vintages, I find the Tre Tine even more classic because of its laser like focus and youthful austerity. The 2010 is a wine that very much fits that mold. Brisk and energetic, the 2010 Tre Tine is the perfect bookend to the evening and brings us full circle to the present day.HK$4,425.00 -

Barolo. Youthful mid ruby with the beginning of orange tinges. Complex nose and palate. Initially the tannins play up and then leave the foreground to the closed fruit. Lots of depth and with wonderful chewy tannins. Still very, very young.HK$21,760.00 -
(12x75cl) 2012Vinous (94)
The 2012 Barolo Tre Tine is lifted, precise and gracious, with beams of firm supporting tannin that give the wine its energy and sense of proportion. Tasted next to the Brunate, the Tre Tine is distinctly more aromatic, delicate and feminine in style, with plenty of bright red fruit and floral overtones. I also tasted the 2012 from a bottle opened two days prior, and the wine had retained pretty much all of its precision. Although the Brunate is the most coveted wine at Rinaldi, the Tre Tine has been impressive in its first three vintages. The 2012 is no exception. Tre Tine is a blend of fruit from the Rinaldi family's holdings in Cannubi (San Lorenzo), Ravera and Le Coste.HK$31,315.00 -

Delicately fragrant and incredibly refined, this stunning red boasts alluring scents of blue flower, rose, wild berry and a whiff of new leather. It's captivatingly ethereal and elegantly structured, offering crushed strawberry, red cherry, cinnamon and white pepper. It's also impeccably balanced thanks to firm polished tannins and bright acidity. While it's already extremely tempting, hold for even more complexity. Drink 2023–2043.HK$3,180.00 -

The 2014 Barolo Tre Tine is nervous and tightly wound, with good precision and a bit more austerity than is the norm. Readers will have to be patient with the 2014, although I suspect the wine will always be a bit aggressive because of the effects of hail. There is good delineation to the bright red stone fruit, tobacco and floral notes. It will be interesting to see how the 2014 develops in coming years.HK$24,005.00 -

This wine celebrated its 100-year anniversary in 2016. Representing its 99th birthday, the 2015 Barolo Tre Tine is a blend of fruit from Ravera (60%), Le Coste (20%) and Cannubi San Lorenzo (20%). These sites encountered some challenges with hail in the 2014 vintage that resulted in a 30% loss of fruit. The Rinaldi family saw hail in the Brunate and Cerequio area in 2016. But the 2015 vintage saw smooth sailing and what winemaker Marta Rinaldi calls a return to normalcy. She says fermentations proceeded beautifully and without any holdups. This Barolo opens to a medium-dark garnet color with bright fruit tones followed by licorice, tar and delicate balsam herb. The wine offers a degree of softness that comes through in the quality of the tannins and the texture of the mouthfeel.HK$27,695.00 -

The 2018 Barolo Tre Tine is a super-classic wine. It reminds me so much of a wine Beppe Rinaldi might have made. Readers will find an austere, taut Barolo built on energy and tension more than primary fruit. It's the sort of Barolo that blossoms only with time in bottle. Spice, cedar, sweet pipe tobacco, dried cherry, macerated red cherry and anise start to open with a bit of coaxing. This is an intriguing wine, to say the least.HK$22,780.00
