    Henri Boillot

    The Boillot family established themselves in the region in 1885, and Henri represents the fifth winemaking generation, with his son now overseeing the production of the reds.

    The winery is located on the “other” side of the RN74 in an estate that includes the Damy cooperage. This impressive facility affords Henri far more space then if he were couched in some mediaeval maison in one of the villages, which is mandatory when you have such an all-embracing portfolio of wines.

    Henri Boillot produces domaine and negociant wines from Burgandy’s most renowned growing areas. Henri is a 5th generation vigneron in the Cote d’Or. Wines of Maison Henri Boillot are produced in a cellar in Meursault and are vibrant and full of character.

    A discreet hint of post-bottling SO2 does not detract significantly from the otherwise reserved but attractively fresh and quite spicy aromas of both white and yellow orchard fruit that displays a top note of dried flowers. The concentrated, powerful, mouth coating and beautifully textured big-bodied flavors possess dry extract to burn, all wrapped in an explosive, linear and driving finish. Despite the muscle and punch of the flavors and finish, this is actually very, very undeveloped at this early junction and will need every bit of a decade, and perhaps a few years more, to really arrive at its full majority but it should be more than worth the wait.

    At Boillot they normally make a single, 350-litre barrel of Montrachet, lightly crushing the fruit before pressing in a basket press. The results in 2019 were absolutely beautiful. Ripe pear and fresh flowers dominate the initial attack. On the palate there is a lovely intensity and richness, with a dense, creamy, buttery texture and huge reserves of substance that will keep this wine ageing for years to come.

    1.5 barrels. Fullish yellow with ripe fruit, a touch of bacon fat along with Jerusalem artichokes. As well as the beautiful quality of fruit there is a saline touch. Certainly complex, not monstrously massive, showing more today than the Bâtard but there is correspondingly even more to come. Fresh white fruit at the very finish. Drink from 2030-2040.     (4.5 g/l acidity with a pH of 3.09, according to Boillot): Bright pale yellow. Subtly complex aromas of stone fruits, wild herbs, coffee, flowers and saline minerality. Creamy, classy and suave, with captivating flavors of caramel and beurre sale lifted by a brisk citrus element. Wonderfully dense, dry and uncompromising wine with superb lift and a very long, mounting finish.

    Outstanding lift to the aromas of lime and crushed stone. Silky, smooth and magically light on its feet, displaying outstanding energy and cut to its lemon, lime and spicy oak flavors. This tastes like it's from another vintage than the Combettes. The bracing, extremely long finish hints at huge dry extract without coming across as phenolic or dry. The crop level here was just 25 hectoliters per hectare, according to Boillot.

    A highly restrained nose requires considerable swirling to liberate the beautifully well-layered aromas of mineral reduction, white rose, spice, citrus and a wisp of exotic tea. Like the Pucelles there is excellent richness and detail and much more minerality-suffusing the almost painfully intense finale that is breathtaking in its persistence. This is a gem of a Puligny 1er and in 2016 is a lovely blend of power and finesse. In sum, this is a knockout.

    5 Star Wine. A fuller yellow here, and an extra degree of completeness, more weight and almost all the class. The oak is still at 50% new and is very well integrated. Gorgeously rich, with little fruits dancing through a meadow. Once again, I do see the magic of this. Henri was strongly advised by his father to look after “Madame de la Mouchère”. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted Oct 2024.
