Méo-Camuzet
About Domaine Méo-Camuzet
Domaine Méo-Camuzet is one of Burgundy’s big names. Until 1988 most of the holdings were leased out. Now Jean-Nicolas Méo and Christian Faurois are making some of Cote d’Or’s best wine. Using organic farming on their great plots; they boast four Grand Cru and ten Premier Cru sites in Nuits St George and Vosne-Romanée.
Today, the fortunes of this magical Domaine and its standing as a winemaking entity could not be further removed from this period which, quite shockingly, actually saw a sizable share of its fruit sold to négociants! The proud master of over 2.5 hectares of Grands Crus and 8 of 1er, some of the most hallowed terroir in Nuits-St-Georges and Vosne-Romanée is owned and its fruit vinified by Méo-Camuzet.
Prior to the arrival of current stewards Jean-Nicholas Méo and Christian Faurois, two of the most monumental Burgundian personalities were fundamental in the history of Méo-Camuzet. The first being its namesake Etienne Camuzet, an important political figure in the early 20th century who, aside from purchasing the bulk of what we know as Domaine Méo-Camuzet holdings today including Château de Clos de Vougeot (later gifted to the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin), made numerous important decisions throughout the region with regards to what parcels could be included in Grand Cru classification.
The second, and quite possibly the single greatest Burgundian winemaker of the 20th century, was Henri Jayer. Specifically invited by the owners of Domaine Méo-Camuzet to tend to their vines since the 1940s due to his already formidable reputation, the masterful vigneron remained a sharecropper of the Domaine’s holdings until 1988 when it moved to vinify its plots itself. Following the transformation of Domaine Méo-Camuzet into an almighty winemaking presence in its own right, Jayer remained a consultant and was utterly instrumental in its ascension to the very pinnacle of Burgundian fine wine.

The 2014 Corton Clos Rognet Grand Cru, which has been part of the domaine since the 1930s and according to Jean-Nicolas Méo was picked a little earlier than usual, has a detailed and mineral-driven bouquet that unfolds nicely in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, crisp and minerally, fine definition with a sustained, lightly spiced finish. Vibrant and tensile, this is a superb offering from the domaine and is highly recommended.HK$3,260.00 -

The 2018 Corton Clos Rognet Grand Cru is deep in color and sports a more opulent and dense bouquet than the Corton-Perrières; the black cherry, cassis and violet aromas are very seductive and generous at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, quite saturated tannins, and sweet and candied in style, offering dark cherries and allspice toward the finish. Fine.HK$2,100.00 -

(from a .45 ha parcel of 80+ year old vines). Elegant, pure and airy aromas are comprised by spiced red cherry, plum and hints of warm earth, smoked game and pretty spice wisps. The nicely intense medium-bodied flavors are shaped by polished tannins and excellent verve while displaying good focus on the dusty, muscular, more structured and focused finish where the only reproach is a mild touch of warmth. As is usually the case, there is just a bit more overall depth here compared to its two Corton stablemates. (92-94)/2034+HK$3,045.00 -

The 2020 Corton Clos Rognet Grand Cru has a little more precision on the nose than the Corton-Perrières, focused and quite energetic. Here too there is enough reduction to render the nose impossible to properly read. The sleek and beautifully concentrated flavors are filled with both fine detail and underlying tension, all wrapped in a moderately austere, complex and strikingly long finale. Excellent potential.HK$9,255.00 -

(this fruit was picked later than the Vigne au Saint and was vinified with 10% whole clusters): Bright red with ruby tones. Distinctly wilder on the nose than the Vigne au Saint, offering scents of cherry, raspberry and animal fur. At once juicier and deeper, displaying terrific flavor intensity and inner-mouth perfume but kept tight by sound underlying minerality. Méo finds this wine less strict than usual but it will still need at least four or five years of aging upon release.HK$12,430.00 -

The 2017 Corton-Perrières Grand Cru has quite a punchy nose, one that wants to be noticed, offering copious dark cherry, wild strawberry and bergamot aromas and becoming ever more floral with aeration. The medium-bodied palate is quite sweet, featuring a touch of fig confit on the entry and candied orange peel lacing the vibrant red fruit. The 10% stem addition lends a little spice on the finish. This is perhaps more expressive than previous vintages I have encountered at this stage in the past.HK$7,795.00 -

A little dark centre here with concentrated fruit on the nose, and a glossiness partly from the oak. A touch of reduction or maybe the 10% stems which have been added back. This is quite severe at the back: this time the stems are to give flesh, by improving the entry on the palate.HK$12,105.00 -

The 2020 Corton-Perrières Grand Cru has a refined nose that gently unfurls in the glass with dark cherries and bilberry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe and quite bold tannins, fine acidity, quite dense and a little sinewy yet maintaining fine definition. Give this 4-5 years in bottle.HK$6,205.00 -

Rich dark purple, with an evidently ripe nose at 14.3%. The cherries may eb on the richer side but they are not cooked. The wine is staying in very good shape because this vineyard always delivers a mineral crunch at the back. A lovely wine which holds its own here very well. I think the best he has made. The 2009 Echezeaux flows across the palate with layers of gracious, elegant fruit. It is a supremely silky wine with plenty of intensity but no heaviness whatsoever. This is classy and refined all the way. Meo’s parcel is in Le Rouge du Bas. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2034.HK$6,530.00 -

The 2020 Echézeaux Grand Cru has a crisp, quite pure bouquet with a mixture of red and blue fruit, a touch of violet, maybe just a bit pinched at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with a sappy opening, quite chewy compared to others and at the moment, this just attenuates a little on the finish. I need to be more convinced by this cuvée, at the moment, surpassed by their top-notch Premier Crus.HK$5,750.00 -

Bright, dark red. Red soil aromas of redcurrant, rust and minerals. Linear and upright, even a bit youthfully austere, but with attractively sweet red fruit flavors backed up by a firm mineral spine. The yield here was a low 25 hectoliters per hectare. (Méo's Pommard, from a single hail-affected source in 2014, was too reduced to assess in November. )HK$1,175.00 -

Black centre with purple rim. Jean-Nicolas finds this both upright and gourmand, a combination he likes. Flirts with 14% and stays on side. Super ripe cherries as part of the nose, kicks on really well on the palate with this high acidity which brings out the red fruit notes in fruit which otherwise wants to be richer. Long finish, and in the end the balance works well. Will need time. Tasted: December 2021HK$825.00 -

5 Star Wine. Going to be bottled tomorrow. A beautiful lively purple. The nose is exquisite, in a fresh dark raspberry style, very intense, with a sweetness to the fruit spreading across the palate. Perfectly poised, juicy, yet with a classical structure suggestive of a higher appellation. Drink from 2025-2029. Tasted: December 2023.HK$1,960.00 -

Aromas of cherries, spices and rich soil tones introduce the 2019 Bourgogne Côte d'Or Pinot Noir, a medium-bodied, supple and charming wine that's lively and expressive, with succulent acids and a pretty core of fragrant fruit. This lovely wine was produced from domaine-grown grapes.HK$3,125.00
