Black cherry, cloves, melted road tar, licorice and leather all run through Oddero's 2016 Barolo Villero. Deep on the palate with huge swaths of tannin, the Villero is a decidedly big, virile wine that is going to need time to fully come together. I imagine it will always be a powerhouse, however. The Villero is not especially elegant; the bombastic style clearly favors power over finesse - at least, it does today. Even so, there is plenty of Nebbiolo character and classic, old-school austerity.HK$1,530.00 -

Ripe-plum, candied-strawberry and white-mushroom aromas follow through to a full body with round, soft tannins and plenty of fruit. Lots of transparent fruit in the center palate. It firms up at the end with a fine, chewy texture. Try after 2026.HK$3,250.00 -

The 2019 Barolo Villero is a powerful, classically austere young Barolo. Then again, that is Villero. Bright acids and clean mineral underpinnings give the 2019 striking energy. Spice, dried flowers, mint, crushed rocks, cranberry and pine all build with a bit of time in the glass. I very much admire the precision here, but the Villero clearly needs time. The 2021 Barolo Villero soars from the glass with intensely spiced, balsamic-tinged aromatics. Deceptively medium in body, with superb persistence and class, the 2021 is simply magnificent. Beams of tannin shape the unforgettable, persistent finish. This is another wine that demands patience. The Villero is not an easy wine, rather it is a Barolo that offers a more inward, at times intellectual, expression of Nebbiolo.HK$4,425.00
