San Giusto
Home to a 9th century military fortress, San Guisto is owned by the Martini di Cigala family. Located on the Sienna side of the Chianti appellation, they benefit from dramatic temperature fluctuations. Their Chianti Classico has the power of Brunello yet retains elegance and structure.

Vinous (91+)The 2019 Chianti Classico is a deep, fleshy wine with a good deal of tannin that will need time to soften. The San Giusto Classico has a track record of aging very well. I have no doubt that will be the case here as well. Time in the glass brings out Sangiovese aromatics, but readers will have to patient here. This classically austere Chianti Classico needs time to be at its very best. |

Wine Advocate (94)From a balanced vintage that delivers acidity and structure, the organic 2021 Chianti Classico reveals a shiny dark garnet color and a clean, mid-weight appearance. There's so much energy and vibrancy on the bouquet, which is a quality that Sangiovese achieves when growing conditions are ideal. Tangy cherry, cassis, blue flower, violet and soft earth give this wine an authentic sense of place. So do the elegant mineral notes. This is a special wine (that is priced very competitively). |

Wine Advocate (94)The 2018 Chianti Classico Riserva Le Baròncole (made from a traditional blend of organic 97% Sangiovese and 3% Canaiolo) shows a distinctively Mediterranean or Italian personality with plenty of summer-fresh cherry, rosemary essence and lavender bud. This wine marks a break from the other beautiful wines in this estate portfolio, thanks to its ethereal freshness and lifted brightness. It finishes with silky, polished tannins. The soils see a mix of galestro and alberese with tufo and clay characteristic of this warm spot in Gaiole in Chianti. Production is 17,262 bottles and 210 magnums. |

Jancis Robinson (18+)Gaiole in Chianti. 97% Sangiovese. 3% Canaiolo. Certified organic. Cask sample. Beautiful shiny ruby. A lifted cherry nose with a hint of pine and black tea leaves. Jewel-like sour-cherry fruit on the palate. Very pure and elegant, yet with lots of concentration and gorgeous tannic bite on the finish. |

Wine Advocate (94)The 2020 Chianti Classico Riserva Le Baròncole (a certified organic wine) shows bright fruit with summer cherry and redcurrant. It offers textural heft and weight. Its Riserva status (with extended aging) is well noted. With time in the glass, it unfolds to leather, potting soil and crushed stone. This vintage does however show a more accessible personality overall (and a powerful 15% alcohol content). |

Vinous (89)The 2000 La Ricolma comes across as dull and lacking in depth. Soft and floral, the 2000 shows only modest complexity. In 2000, from Sangiovese to Merlot, we didn't make a single wine that is truly satisfying, said Luca Martini di Cigala. That's a bit severe in my view, but there is no getting past the fact that the 2000 is a touch lean and not really interesting. If there were any doubts about that, they were dispelled in this tasting. |

Vinous (96)Rich and flamboyant to its core, the 2007 La Ricolma captures the personality of the year in its super-ripe personality. Sweet red cherry jam, kirsch, menthol, chalk, wild flowers and truffles give the 2007 its exotic, sensual personality. It is a terrific choice for drinking now, but also has more than enough depth to age well for many years to come. Beautifully layered fruit and silky tannins add to a real feeling of voluptuousness. |

Vinous (97+)The 2013 La Ricolma is powerful and explosive in the glass, with huge fruit and equally vibrant tannins. Iron, smoke, dried herbs, blood orange, mint and spice meld together in a virile, imposing wine that still needs years in bottle to be at its very best. It is very clearly a great wine in the making. This fruit was picked on October 2 and 3, which is on the later side of things. |

Vinous (100)The 2015 La Ricolma confirms its place as one of the greatest wines ever made at San Giusto. Powerful and ripe, with tons of backing structure, the 2015 will thrill readers lucky enough to own it for many years to come. A rush of super-ripe dark red fruit, blood orange, mint, chalk, truffle and dried flowers builds into the huge, resonant finish. Next to the 2016, the 2015 has firmer tannins that are going to require time in bottle to soften. |

Vinous (100)The 2016 La Ricolma is a worthy follow up to the epic 2015. I don’t think any estate in Tuscany has ever turned out two back to back wines that equal San Giusto's Ricolma in 2015 and 2016. Lavender, graphite, crushed rocks, sage, licorice and crème de cassis all build in a potent yet refined Merlot. A wine of mind-blowing purity, density and explosive power, the 2016 is flat out stunning in every way. Readers who can find the 2016 should not hesitate, as it is epic in every way. |

James Suckling (99)Blueberries and black olives with so many flowers, such as violets and honeysuckle. Licorice, too. This is full and very tight with lots of back-end tannins that build through the finish. A tight, muscular and curated young wine that lasts for minutes. Best after 2028. |

Vinous (96)The 2019 La Ricolma is a dark, sumptuous wine. Black cherry, plum, licorice, cloves and incense power through. Ricolma, like the other 2019s, needs time to open, as it is quite compact and tannic at this early stage. There's good depth in the glass, if not quite the finesse of recent years. The 2019 spent 22 months in French oak, 20-25% new. |

Wine Advocate (96)One of Italy's most cherished Merlots, the organic San Giusto a Rentennano 2021 La Ricolma is stitched carefully together with a very bright fruit note that recalls sweet cherry and crème de cassis. Those softly ripened fruit tones are followed by sweet spice and cured tobacco. The wine hits the palate with power, in part fueled by a 15% alcohol content, but it also fully envelops the senses with soft tannins and rich concentration. |

Vinous (98)The 2010 Percarlo is shaping up to be one of the elite wines of this great Tuscan vintage. Even today, the 2010 is remarkably seamless, balanced and integrated, with fine tannins, beautifully delineated fruit and exceptional overall balance. Layers of dark fruit, graphite and exotic spices build to a crescendo of aromas and flavors that captivates the senses. Although it is early, it certainly looks like the 2010 Percarlo is set to take its place as one of the greatest wines ever made at San Giusto. |

Vinous (98)A wine of extraordinary finesse, the 2013 Percarlo is utterly magnificent. Creamy and beautifully layered in the glass, the 2013 speaks to finesse more than the power and explosiveness that is often found here. With time in the glass, the mid-palate fleshes out and the flavors gain in intensity and darkness. When young, Percarlo is often forbiddingly tannic, but the gradual move towards larger format barrels and casks has, among other things, given the wine much more textural elegance. I can't wait to see how it ages. This is one of the most complete and strikingly beautiful wines of the vintage. |

Vinous (98)The 2015 Percarlo, the estate's 100% Sangiovese, towers in the glass with huge, dark fruit to match its powerful, vertical structure. Ample and expansive on the palate, with huge textural depth, the 2015 is a total stunner. The darker, more muscular side of Sangiovese emerges in this gorgeous, absolutely stunning wine. Black cherry, lavender, spice and smoke overtones fill out the wine's big frame effortlessly. Proprietor Luca Martini di Cigala aged the 2015 in a combination of cask and tonneau. The 2015 Percarlo is a riveting wine readers will not want to miss. |

Vinous (99)The 2016 Percarlo captures all of the beauty it has always shown in the cellar. Pliant, silky and exceptionally polished, the 2016 simply has it all. Freshly cut flowers, rose petal, mint, spice and blood orange add striking aromatic nuance to a core of brilliant Sangiovese fruit. Powerful and ample, with superb aromatic lift, the 2016 Percarlo is exceptionally beautiful and moving from the very first taste. A whole range of floral and mineral notes extend the finish effortless. The tannins need time to soften, so readers should plan on at least a few years of cellaring. In a word: compelling. |

Vinous (97)The 2017 Percarlo is an exotic beauty. Rich and sumptuous in the glass, with tremendous fruit density, the 2017 packs a serious punch. Succulent dark cherry, plum, licorice, menthol and earthy notes emerge over time, but the tannins remain imposing. Like the Baròncole, the Percarlo needs cellaring to be at its best. The 2017 was much more forthcoming from barrel. It will reveal all of that sumptuousness once again, but not soon. |

Vinous (97)The 2018 Percarlo is another fabulous wine in this range from San Giusto. Ample and creamy, the 2018 dazzles with its total sense of finesse. In 2018, Percarlo is silky, gracious and super-refined. Time in the glass brings out attractive floral and spice overtones that lend brightness. It shows remarkably well for a wine that was bottled only recently. The 2018 was aged in a combination of 30HL casks and 500-liter tonneaux. |
