Sylvain Cathiard
About Sylvain Cathiard
Originating from Savoie and arriving in Burgundy to work with the imperious Domaine de la Romanée Conti and Domaine Lamarche, the Cathiard family possess one of the most impressive collective CVs in the world. It has, expectedly, forged its glorious reputation later when they started a winery themselves.
Currently at the helm is Sebastian Cathiard, the third generation of the family, who cultivates a mere 5.5 hectares of land spread over so many sites with none bigger than one hectare. For context, the largest cuvée Cathiard produces is the Bourgogne Rouge, which sees just over 2,000 bottles of production each year.
Because of the scarcity, the unmatched demand and the heavy allocation for top restaurants, his wines are, naturally, some of the hardest to acquire.

(1x150cl) 2017Vinous (91-93)
The 2017 Vosne-Romanée Aux Reignots 1er Cru comes from relatively young vines, now just over 20 years old (which is why Sébastien Cathiard served it before the En Orveaux). It has a simple but focused bouquet of blackberry and briary aromas. The palate is very well balanced, quite grippy and sappy in the mouth, leading to a sweet, anise-tinged finish that lingers. Very fine, but not the most cerebral cuvée from Cathiard this year.HK$13,445.00 -
Vinous (91-93)
The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Aux Reignots 1er Cru possesses a very harmonious, understated bouquet that gradually unfurls to reveal enticing black cherry, raspberry and crushed stone aromas, later becoming more floral in style but always retaining a sense of control. The palate is extremely precise and very smooth. Perhaps this is the one cuvée from Cathiard where slightly earlier picking might have engendered more precision on the finish, which flirts with exotic notes, pulling back just in time. One for those who like a flamboyant Vosne-Romanée.HK$5,540.00 -

Vinous (87-90)
The 2020 Vosne-Romanée Aux Reignots 1er Cru, from vines planted in 1997, has a very ripe nose with black cherries and fig, powerful and maybe not quite as well defined as the En Orveaux. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe tannins, succulent and luxuriant, this just bordering Grenache in style. This is maybe one I would have picked earlier. Maybe I will proved wrong once this is in bottle.HK$30,850.00 -

Palish red. Smoky, meaty nose doesn't show quite the purity this wine displayed from barrel. Broad and sweet but a bit youthfully closed; in a rather unforthcoming stage. This is round for the vintage but the lingering finish shows a trace of dryness. An awkward showing.HK$73,695.00 -
(12x75cl) 2005Wine Advocate (92)
The 2005 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru En Orveaux from Sylvain Cathiard is a lavish, dramatically ripe wine that soars from the glass with a decadent bouquet of cherries, blackberry preserve, cassis and dark chocolate, framed by oak vanillin. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, powerful and ample, with a generous core of sweet fruit, fine-grained structuring tannins and sufficient succulent acidity to remain in balance despite its ripeness. Inevitably, this begs the question of to what extent it's a precursor of Cathiard's 2015s: my supposition is the younger vintage will be more precise and controlled at maturity, its oak influence more completely integrated, while retaining the exuberant expression of fruit found in the 2005s. Of course, only time will tell.HK$103,580.00 -
Vinous (93)
Good full red. Complex nose offers black cherry, brown spices, minerals, rose petal and menthol. Silky-sweet and perfumed, with a captivating spicy perfume in the mouth. Quite elegantly styled, and yet there's power here too. Insidious spreading, sweet finish really saturates the palate and sticks around for a while.HK$47,900.00 -
(12x75cl) 2008Vinous (93)
Good deep red. Knockout slightly high-toned nose melds raspberry, smoky minerality and flowers. Silky on entry, then an explosion of spices in the middle palate, with almost painful energy to the red berry, crushed stone and pepper flavors. Wonderfully rich yet somehow weightless. A real essence of Burgundy. Finishes very long, with suave tannins. I'd give this beauty a decade in the cellar. Cathiard loves it today but believes it will shut down in the bottle.HK$73,890.00 -

Bright red. Black raspberry, spices, animal fur and smoky minerality on the nose, with a light jammy suggestion and some pungent oak. Creamy-sweet and lush on the palate, with an old-viney thickness of texture that really saturates the mouth on the finish. This very ripe wine betrays just a tough of oaky harshness today, but there's also good lift from the calcaire-rich soil.HK$36,075.00 -
(3x75cl) 2013Vinous (93-95)
The 2013 Vosne-Romanée En Orveaux is a decidedly powerful, muscular wine. Dark red cherry, plum, spice, new leather and menthol are some of the many notes that take shape as this virile Burgundy shows off its compelling beauty and personality. Simply put, the En Orveaux is a wine of considerable potential. Readers who can find it should not hesitate.HK$16,990.00 -
Wine Advocate (93-95)
The 2014 Vosne Romanée 1er Cru en Orveau has a more complex bouquet than the Aux Reignots, with delineated, mineral-rich blackberry and wild strawberry fruit. The palate is beautifully balanced with very fine tannin, very focused and tensile, almost crystalline on the very structured finish. This is a real vin de garde and may be one of the best expressions of this vineyard produced by the domaine.HK$6,320.00 -

The 2016 Vosne-Romanée En Orveaux 1er Cru has a seductive, very floral nose with iris and peony suffusing the pretty black cherry and red plum fruit, hints of pain d’épices surfacing with time. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, lightly spiced and quite minty towards what feels like an assertive finish. Very classy, yet it is only just beginning to unfurl.HK$17,980.00 -
Vinous (92-94)
The 2017 Vosne-Romanée En Orveaux comes from 75-year-old vines from massal selection that tend to suffer millerandage that enhances air circulation around the bunches. Matured in 50% new oak, it has a fragrant mixture of red and blue fruit on the very floral nose: scents of pressed violets waft up from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, and there is a palpable marine influence, shucked oyster shells permeating the red fruit toward quite a feisty finish. Superb.HK$6,565.00 -

The 2018 Vosne-Romanée En Orveaux 1er Cru is perhaps the overlooked gem within Cathiard’s portfolio, a view shared by the winemaker himself. This latest iteration has brilliant delineation on the nose, offering intense blackberry, raspberry and crushed mineral aromas that blossom with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with filigreed tannins, a killer line of acidity and a sense of symmetry toward the long finish. This is outstanding.HK$5,385.00 -

Burghound (92-95)
Sweet Spot Outstanding. Here too the nose is gorgeously airy, layered and stylish with its ultra-spicy aromas of black raspberry coulis, floral and similar tea nuances. The rich, delicious and voluminous middle weight flavors are also a bit more powerful than usual with good minerality in evidence on the balanced and strikingly persistent finish. This too is excellent.HK$4,105.00 -

Palish bright red. Pungent aromas of raspberry, minerals and orange peel; this is more like it. Sweet and silky in the mouth, with explosive flavors of raspberry, spices and minerals, and a hint of chocolatey torrefaction. Ripe acids prolong the tangy, spicy finish. Very sexy wine, showing much better today than the Orveaux.HK$107,380.00 -
(6x75cl) 2009Vinous (91-94)
Good full red. Complex, expressive, soil-driven nose offers raspberry, cocoa powder, spices and flinty minerality. Sappy and sweet in the mouth, with a penetrating quality to the flavors of red berries, flowers and spices. Here the 100% oak adds sex appeal without overwhelming the wine. Finishes very long, with suave tannins providing solid structural support.HK$44,375.00 -
(3x75cl) 2010Vinous (91-94)
Good, bright deep red. Aromas of black raspberry, mocha, cocoa and chocolatey oak. Sweet and thick but energetic, with a chocolatey richness to the lightly saline flavors of dark berries, spices and minerals. A bit clenched on the back end but dense and very long, and not at all heavy. A very good vintage for this cuvee.HK$41,025.00 -
Vinous (91-94)
Good bright, deep red. Black raspberry, maraschino cherry and a whiff of meat on the compelling nose. Thick, tactile and utterly smooth on the palate, but with real energy and mineral lift to the flavors of dark fruits, mint and wild herbs. Finishes with serious tannic clout but has the stuffing to support it. This impressively vibrant wine should reward eight to ten years of cellaring.HK$64,495.00 -
(3x75cl) 2015Wine Advocate (95-97)
The 2015 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots, matured in two-thirds new oak, has a bewitching bouquet that is very pure and intense, layers of dark cherry and wild strawberry fruit tinged with iodine that seems to blossom in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with quite firm tannin and structured, underneath those intense dark berry fruit, a touch of salinity towards the finish that keeps the senses searching and eager for the next sip. Typical of Cathiard's style of winemaking, this is just a brilliant Les Suchots from one of its finest exponents.HK$33,965.00 -
Vinous - Neal Martin (95-97)
The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots 1er Cru has a gorgeous bouquet, a mélange of red and black fruit and more sous-bois aromas than the En Orveaux; touches of sage and pressed flowers emerge with time, adding more and more complexity. The medium-bodied palate offers sappy red fruit and gentle grip in the mouth. Quite structured for a Les Suchots, with a stunning, lightly spiced, energetic finish that has more vivacity than it knows what to do with. Fabulous.HK$5,995.00
