Vie di Romans
Hidden deep in the heart of Isonzo del Friuli, at the far southeast of Italy's most northeasterly vinous region, Vie di Romans stands proudly amongst the very finest producers of Italian wine across the whole country.
From this seat of viticultural power, the legendary Gianfranco Gallo crafts truly beautiful wines from his 60 hectares of vineyards. Broadly speaking, this entire area is comprised of well-drained soils which are rich in minerals and provide excellent water retention for the precious vines. From the East, consistently cool winds regulate the fruit's temperature during the hot ripening summer months. This tempering of the heat prolongs the grapes' time on the vine before maturation, allowing for greater development of characteristics and, ultimately, the intensity of the wine.
Naturally, this 60-hectare area is dotted with utterly unique and characterful terroirs in the form of single vineyards. The idiosyncrasies of these plots, which express themselves in the most wonderful ways through the wine in the bottle, are Gallo's true passion. Following a strict methodology of low yields and selective harvesting times, he coaxes the very best expressions of his varied terriors into our glasses.

Vinous (94)
The 2022 Chardonnay mixes richness with energy and savory with sweetness, as crushed yellow apples and gingery spice combine with minty herbs and wet stone. This is soothingly round and enveloping, quite textural, with waves of ripe green melon and mineral-tinged apricots coasting across a stream of zesty acidity. The 2022 finishes youthfully tense, structured and spicy, with hints of baked pear and cardamom that resonate. While a bit backward today, the potential here is off the charts. Vie di Romans has decided to begin holding back their wines longer in the cellar to allow them to develop further before release, and I think this is a perfect example of how insightful that decision was.HK$2,585.00 -
Wine Advocate (94)
The Vie di Romans 2023 Friuli Isonzo Pinot Grigio Dessimis shows a faint copper hue with pink-gold reflections. The bouquet is quite expressive, revealing floral nuances and sweet almond that go beyond the typical profile of Pinot Grigio, offering a more sophisticated interpretation that transcends simple stone fruit and citrus. The wine is dry and tonic, with a medium texture and an edgy, firm, mineral-driven close. The fruit comes from 9.3 hectares of shallow, rocky soils with reddish clay rich in iron oxide and aluminum, providing excellent drainage and contributing to the wine’s structure and mineral intensity. Aged for nine months on the lees in 225-liter barriques, 66,000 bottles were produced.HK$1,615.00 -
