Domaine de la Vougeraie
About Domaine de la Vougeraie
Created as recently as 1999, Domaine de la Vougeraie has seen one of the most remarkable ascensions to prominence in the entire region. Jean-Claude Boisset (of the famous Boisset Group) took the seismic decision at the turn of the millennium to combine his unbelievable, yet disparate, Burgundian holdings from various négociant companies he had accrued over the years.
A monumentally successful decision, its title is derived from the significant holdings in Boisset’s home village of Vougeot. The winery itself is located not in Vougeot, but rather in Prémeaux - in the old Claudine Deschamps cellars. From this seat, general manager Sylvie Poillot coaxes and crafts sublime expressions of over 30 appellations totalling 40 hectares under vine.
Viniculture
These significant holdings, which include a stunning six Grands Crus, make Domaine de la Vougeraie one of the most important and influential producers in Burgundy – the gorgeous wines produced vintage after vintage make it one the best too. Boisset’s exceptional success, having founded his first eponymous négociant company at the age of 18, means no expense is spared in the viticultural or vinification process. Fully biodynamic practically from the instant it was formed as a Domaine, an entirely new suite of wooden fermentation vats and a state-of-the-art sorting table was added to the winery in Prémeaux.
The result has been some of the most critically acclaimed Burgundy of the past 20 years. The change in winemaker from Pascal Marchand to Pierre Vincent in 2005 has seen a more delicate and perhaps terroir-driven style from Vougeraie – Marchand preferred heavier extraction which resulted in powerful, but perhaps slightly blunted wines. In 2019, Sylvie Poillot has continued the winemaking philosophy of Vincent, crafting a range of wines with an inherent sense of place and judged to perfection in their construction.

The 2017 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Clos de Thorey is showing beautifully, wafting from the glass with a lovely bouquet of cherries, wild berries and cassis, mingled with notes of raw cocoa, cinnamon and sweet forest floor. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, deep and velvety, with a sappy core of nicely concentrated fruit, melting tannins and lively acids. Exemplifying the elegant style of contemporary Domaine de la Vougeraie, this has turned out very well.HK$6,385.00 -

The 2020 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos des Thorey 1er Cru comes from three-hectares of vines with thte 50% whole bunch courtesy of the old vines. The nose offers dark cherries, crushed strawberry and wild hedgerow scents, fine delineation and vigour. The palate is slightly creamy in texture on the entry, quite plush and fruit-driven, pure red cherries and strawberry fruit with a sleek and caressing finish. Predesigned to seduce, this should age well in bottle.HK$3,580.00 -

The 2021 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos des Thorey 1er Cru comes from two small parcels that are vinified separately. The nose is perfumed with wilted rose petals and peony filtering through the transparent red fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and crisp acidity. It's not complex, but there is balance and focus, plus an attractive peppery finish. An early-drinking delight.HK$4,870.00 -

Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. This Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru Les Damodes 2011 has a ripe bouquet, even though there is a touch of reduction, the oak lending light chocolate scents toward the red fruit that appear to ebb away in the glass and flow back with more maritime aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with quite succulent and fleshy tannins. The oak is pronounced here and feels a little dominant on the finish, although there is good weight and a pleasant spicy aftertaste. Hopefully, that unresolved wood will assimilate over the next couple of years and it might then merit a higher score.HK$4,780.00 -
(1x75cl) 2012Vinous (90-92+)
The 2012 Nuits St. Georges Les Damodes is plump, juicy and inviting on the palate, with lovely depth and resonance. This is another wine that comes across as raw and not fully formed. In this case, the malos aren't fully finished yet. Still, there appears to be plenty of mid-palate pliancy here to suggest the Damodes will develop nicely over the coming months and years.HK$900.00 -

Good medium red. Cool, medicinal black cherry, blueberry and violet on the nose. Concentrated, ripe and sappy, showing excellent texture and intense spice character for the vintage. Finishes juicy and long, with some very ripe chocolate tones and big, tactile tannins that avoid dryness. This will need patience.HK$810.00 -
Vinous (90-93)
(in fût; the malolactic fermentation finished in July): Good medium red. Pure but subdued aromas of currant, black cherry, smoky stone, licorice and violet. Intensely flavored and evolving slowly, combining a restrained sweetness and good salty minerality. Darker in its fruit character than the Clos de Thorey. The wine's strong, spicy, tannic finish calls for more élevage.HK$4,550.00 -
Vinous (90-92)
The 2019 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Damodes 1er Cru includes one-quarter whole bunch this year. It has a well-defined bouquet of more black than red fruit, plus touches of white pepper and crushed limestone. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, cohesive and silky-smooth. Again, a little more grip would be nice, although it has plenty of charm. Drink after 3–4 years in bottle.HK$1,015.00 -
(6x75cl) 2020Vinous (91-93)
The 2020 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Damodes 1er Cru includes 50% whole bunch. This has a welcoming bouquet with raspberry and crushed strawberry fruit, hints of pressed rose petals and coniferous trees. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red berry fruit, fine grip, a little compact towards the finish, though it should flesh out in bottle. Quite poised and sustained.HK$3,665.00 -

The 2021 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Damodes 1er Cru sports some reduction on the nose, although behind that lies attractive brambly red berry fruit and earthy, almost peaty scents tucked in behind it. Clearly, this will need a couple more years to unfurl. The palate offers plenty of crunchy red fruit, quite tart at first, though it feels tensile and mineral driven. There is some tapering towards the finish where it would benefit from more substance and grip but overall, a good effort in this vintage. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.HK$4,295.00 -

The 2017 Pommard Les Petits Noizons is showing very well, unfurling in the glass with aromas of wild berries, smoked meats, rich soil tones, cinnamon and spices. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, delicate and fine-boned, its perfumed core of fruit framed by powdery tannins and ripe acids. This is an elegant, gently reductive Pommard that should offer a broad drinking window.HK$3,345.00 -

Located at the St-Aubin end of the vineyard. Glowing lemon and lime in colour, there is more weight and more tension than the village Puligny, but I don’t find it a lot more interesting. Ripe grapefruit and lemon notes, middleweight. Tasted: November 2021HK$6,575.00 -

The 2020 Puligny-Montrachet Village comes from three climats picked and pressed separately. This has a well-defined, chalky bouquet that opens nicely in the glass. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, quite taut and saline with a touch of stem ginger on the finish. Fine.HK$3,250.00 -
(6x75cl) 2021Vinous (86-88)
The 2021 Puligny-Montrachet Village comes from three parcels. It has a touch more presence on the nose compared to other cuvées with candle wax and honeysuckle mixed with orange blossom, quite Chassagne in style. The palate is balanced with a rounded texture. It's pretty generous and, clearly, a wine that is going to be very approachable. It just misses Puligny DNA, though it's a delicious Chardonnay.HK$3,545.00 -

The 2019 Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Marconnets 1er Cru comes from 1.83 hectares of vine and includes 30% whole bunch. The cohesive, focused bouquet features a mélange of red and black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with light tannins and nicely balanced, but as with some of the domaine’s other cuvées, I am seeking more grip and density on the finish.HK$3,600.00 -

The 2016 Vougeot 1er Cru Le Clos Blanc de Vougeot felt more austere on the nose compared to the Puligny Champ Gain. The palate is nicely balanced but maybe missing the complexity of that aforementioned premier cru. I appreciate the dab of spice on the finish, but I would like more personality to come through in bottle.HK$7,235.00 -

Focused, bright and pretty, this is a savory, even saline, wine. There's an attractive leesiness on the nose followed by ample yellow fruits on the generous, juicy palate. Plums, sweet apples and cherries mesh on the long finish. I always find this wine delightful. 2022-28HK$5,055.00 -

The 2021 Vougeot 1er Cru Le Clos Blanc de Vougeot was fairly reduced on the nose when tasted at the domaine and difficult to read. The palate is balanced with commendable weight and touches of tropical fruit with decent length, though surprisingly, given the vintage, it just needs a little more tension on the finish.HK$4,210.00 -

The 2019 Vougeot Le Clos de Prieuré Blanc 1er Cru comes from the 0.83-hectare monopole. Fresh apple blossom and wet limestone scents on the nose are flanked by white flowers. The palate is well defined with a fine bead of acidity. This is a slightly more linear and refined Clos de Prieuré Blanc than previous years, revealing a subtle spiciness on the finish. Very fine.HK$4,180.00
