Behold the alluring Littlemill, Single Malt Scotch 1988 26 YO, NV 1988, hailing from the heart of Scotland's esteemed Lowlands. This exceptional, non-vintage whisky is the rare distillate of an operational history that meets a premature end, venerated producer Littlemill's legacy residing in bottles of its distinguished scotch. The spirit displays sensuous notes of tropical fruits, honey, and spices enveloped in its golden-amber hue. Painstakingly matured for 26 years, the whisky is preserved in American oak ex-bourbon barrels, striking an inseparable balance between oak and malt, rendering its celebrated profile complex yet harmonious. Savour the light-bodied drink of medium intensity with a hauntingly enduring and silky finish, a testament to its artisanal craft. Regrettably, the distillery's demise in 1994 has made the Littlemill, Single Malt Scotch 1988 26 YO, NV 1988 a rare and covetable treasure, reminding connoisseurs of whisky's hypnotic timelessness.

Vinous (94)

White peach, apple and lime are accented by their pits and pits as well as by raw almond on an enticing nose highly reminiscent of that exhibited by the corresponding 2016. Scents of Ceylon tea and spring beauty (Claytonia) add inner-mouth allure. The feel is flatteringly silken, notwithstanding the persistence of stimulating piquancy. Infectious juiciness, along with an invigoratingly tactile, active sense of crystalline stony impingement, dramatically sets this wine’s vibrant, bell-clear finish apart from that of its Höllberg sibling.

Vinous (94)

The 2019 Hemelrand Vine Garden was picked early in the morning and fermented over two months (nine for the Roussanne). It has a very well-defined bouquet of red apple, fresh pear, yellow flower and strawberry scents, plus hints of chamomile in the background. The palate is well balanced with crisp acidity and wonderful _mineralité_ on the finish; there’s something Alsace-like about this cuvée. One of Alheit’s more cerebral wines of the vintage.

The maiden (and alas, final) 2019 Lost & Found is Chris Alheit’s foray into sweet wines made entirely from Hanepoot, the local name for Muscat d’Alexandria, from a single vineyard in Breedekloof. Burnished amber in color, it has a captivating bouquet of marmalade, quince and mango notes, all very pure and beautifully defined. The palate is well balanced and viscous in texture, offering marmalade and quince on the entry. It actually reminds me of a Tokay Eszencia, but it is all kept amazingly fresh thanks to the razor-sharp acidity. A spellbinding sweet debut for Chris Alheit, but then again, I didn’t expect anything less. Grab this one-off while you can.

This is really a phenomenal South African wine for the money showing such delicacy yet also power. The nose boasts plenty of iodine, crushed stones, balsam, violets and hints of sweet herbs. The palate's full and exuberant with mouth-coating tannins and a long finish. 64% shiraz, 29% cabernet and 7% petit verdot. Best in 2020.

Greg Sherwood MW (96)

A blend of 47% Cabernet Sauvignon, 46% Syrah and 7% Petit Verdot which was aged for 19 months in French oak, 50% new 400 litre barrels and 50% second fill. A seductively perfumed vintage, the aromatics show alluring notes of violets, potpourri and hits of lily over dark bramble berry fruits with hints of mocha espresso notes that combine with subtle buttered brown toast nuances. The palate shows fabulous elegance and finesse with a soft touch concentration of black currant, Christmas pudding, savoury plum compote and black cherry. The tannins are powdery and fine grained but also structured and drying, combining well with a fresh glossy acidity that keeps the finish focused, vibrant and bright. An impressive wine that not only shows off another great vintage in the Cape but also what is increasingly possible with the superb Anwilka Stellenbosch terroir.

Aromas of red and black currants, black licorice and fresh garden herbs. Full-bodied with fine, decadent tannins that run the length of the wine. Widescreen on the palate with lovely openness, but still retains some exciting tension. Very different mouth-feel than previous vintages. Textural at the finish. Very nicely structured. Best after 2025.

I love the depth and complexity of the nose, which brings you down deeply into the wine, showing blackberry, ink, tar, earth, incense, cloves, and black licorice. Thyme, too. The purity of the fruit, including cassis, is the real thing. This is full-bodied, but remains so fresh and vertical on the palate. The tannins are so fine and integrated, producing a millefeuille-like layering of tannin and cool, blue fruit. Incredible wine. The greatest wine made in China so far. 60% cabernet sauvignon, 19% cabernet franc, 10% merlot, 7% syrah and 4% petit verdot. 26,000 bottles made. Drinkable now, but will be so much better in four or five years.

Very scented, complex and layered with a classy nose full of ripe currants, smoke and sweet tobacco leaves. Graphite, charcoal, exotic herbs and cigar box. A hint of black truffle and tapenade, too. Full body with fine, silky tannins that highlight the juicy aspect of this wine. Dusty tannins gradually build up on the palate in a crescendo, following through to a juicy, precise and lengthy finish. Super-polished and refined. There is still cabernet verticality on the palate. The finest Ao Yun so far? It has a finish that lasts almost two minutes. 67% cabernet sauvignon, 17% cabernet franc, 10% syrah and 6% petit verdot. This is a blend of 23% of Xidang village, 21% Sinong, 32% Shuori and 24% Adong. Already drinkable now, but should hold until 2026.

Blair Athol is one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland, tracing its foundation back to 1798 when it was originally set up as the Aldour Distillery, in reference to its water source, the Allt Dour - or Burn of the Otter. Located on the outskirts of the Victorian spa town of Pitlochry in Highland Perthshire, Blair Athol, along with neighbouring Edradour are two of the final vestiges of Perthshire's long lost farm distilleries.

In addition to its proud heritage, Blair Athol is also one of the most visually striking distilleries with many of the original buildings as well as an impressive dunnage where the finest casks slumber patiently waiting to be bottled. Only two official bottlings have ever hit the market; the standard, heavily sherried 12 year old and a limited edition 23 which shows the longevity of Blair Athol's spirit.

A key component of the Bell's blend of whiskies, Blair Athol is praised for its fruit-driven style with subtle earthy - not smokey - peat influence courtesy of the ancient moorlands over which its water flows. A mellow malt; the quintessential old highland gentleman, Blair Athol has as much of a bright future as it does a storied past. It is only a matter of time before the reputation of this much loved distillery catches up with the ineffable quality of their whisky.

Jancis Robinson (18)

A carpenter’s workshop, filled with the scent of freshly sawn and planed wood. Sweet tobacco. A distinctly feral, ‘animal’ smell. Dried meadow flowers and hay. Dried orange-peel dust. Something almost lactic. It changes from sip to sip, moment to moment. First dry, then sweet. Bitter, for a second, then turning tender. Jagged edges melt silky smooth from along the slim ribbon of its structure. Demanding and volatile; then tucking charms into your palm. The intensity of the flavours – explosive bitter-sweet oranges, hit-gingered quince, cinnamon and cumin, sour cherries in Aceto Balsamico Tradizionale di Modena, decayed-wood dust – is startling, and yet the wine is fine-boned, almost ethereal. William Chester Minor, surgeon, wordsmith, schizophrenic and one of the greatest contributors to the Oxford English Dictionary, was attributed the quote, ‘Listen to the leaves scratch the air. Sometimes it sounds like gunfire. Sometimes like applause.’ I thought of those words when I tasted this wine. Food pairings: spanakopita; cauliflower pakora with spiced onion chutney; welsh rarebit; fried grouse with orange sauce.
