The Rozas 1er Cru has a slight change in 2022 and turned into a village wine, the 2022 Rozas. They selected the best five vineyards that used to go to the Rozas 1er Cru, vineyards they have worked since 2012. In this warmer vintage, they did a softer vinification, with less maceration and more fermentation without skins, to avoid over-ripeness and notes of black fruit in the wine. It has more fruit and some silty tannins, which are more like Italian tannins in the more Mediterranean years like this 2022. This village is more subject to the changes in the years, with more herbal and ethereal notes in the wines in cooler years and juicier and with more marked tannins in the warmer ones. The pale, delicate and ethereal 2021 Tumba del Rey Moro feels more austere than any other vintage of this single-vineyard wine. It comes from vines at 1,100 meters above sea level on granite soils in the village of Villanueva de Ávila and has a notable absence of fruit. Instead, it's mineral and floral, with subtle herbal notes ("piparra" peppers again!). It was harvested around the 12th of October, and by that time, the grapes had had a full development of aromas and flavors. The wine finished with 14% alcohol but with gobsmacking balance and freshness. The alcohol is not noticeable, a constant across the portfolio. The nose was shy at first and took time to develop, but when it did, it was layered and complex, with more Burgundian floral notes. The palate is super austere with lots of energy, reminiscent of liquid granite, with grip and light. It's a sharp vintage of Tumba del Rey Moro. 1,712 bottles produced. There is a new village red from the village of Villanueva de Ávila, the village where they have established their operations. For them, the 2022 Villanueva is the more complete wine, subtle and delicate but with energy and power. It comes from different vineyards in the village, some owned, some grapes purchased, grown at an average altitude of 1,000 meters. It fermented with full clusters and had a long maceration (but not as long as in cooler years) of 35 to 40 days, and part of the wine fermented pressed without skins. It fermented and matured in an oak vat. No sulfur was added at any point of the vinification or élevage, and only a small quantity was added at bottling time. It has a moderate 13% alcohol and a very subtle, elegant and nuanced nose, with ethereal notes of flowers, herbs and spice (nutmeg!). It has a medium-bodied palate, nicely textured, with very fine silty tannins and a long, tasty finish. It's austere beyond the character of the year (you'd never say it's a 2022...) with very good aging potential. 2,798 bottles produced. It was bottled in March 2023.HK$790.00 -

The new red blend 2020 Alma Contador is going to be sold mostly through the négociants from Bordeaux. It was produced with grapes from three vineyards in San Vicente de la Sonsierra at different altitudes and is a blend of Tempranillo with 8% Garnacha with limited yields because of mildew. It matured in new French barriques for 20 months. He wanted a more classical image and perhaps a more classical profile of wine. It's perfumed and floral, with notes of aromatic herbs, a little balsamic and quite showy, with very fine tannins and freshness, as he used more grapes from the higher-altitude zones. It's powerful and elegant, and in a way it reminds me of the style of the initial vintages of La Cueva de Contador; it's clean and elegant. It's 14.5% alcohol with a pH of 3.55. It's very young but still drinkable, as the quality of the tannins is very good. I think this is the one wine I'd buy from their portfolio if I could only buy one. Lush, fat and sweet, but its opulent red berry, cherry and dark chocolate flavors are enlivened by strong minerality. It's marked by the toasted barrels and has all the baby fat it needs to be rendered invisible with time in bottle.
