Eduardo García makes this outstanding assemblage of Tinto Fino and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon with grapes sourced from Anguix, Baños de Valdearados, Moradillo and Tubilla del Lago. It's a wine that illustrates his skills as a blender, showing a well-judged combination of structure and acidity. Clove spice, plum, orange zest and blueberry flavours are framed by scented, lightly toasty oak. One of the best Garmón releases yet.HK$2,060.00 -

The stunning 2021 Pancrudo has a nose of violets, rose petals and translucent red berries with a twist of spice and herbs, aromatic, intoxicating, profound and intense. It has a medium-bodied, elegant palate with vibrant acidity (acid berries), pungent and persistent flavors and fine-boned tannins. It's pure Garnacha from Badarán with power and ripeness, 14.5% alcohol and full development of aromas and flavors. It is nuanced, complex and balanced. It matured in foudre and one-third of the volume in concrete egg. It has to be the finest wine I have ever tasted from Gómez Cruzado. Bravo! 8,981 bottles were filled in May 2023.HK$1,830.00 -
Decanter (96)
This has a burnished mahogany colour - pale and interesting with an intense nose, coffee, tertiary notes, forest floor, balsam and tree bark. On the palate graceful plum fruit is now giving way to raisin, toffee, balsam, coffee, spice box and creamy caramel. It has a refined texture with super complexity and balance alongside a lovely freshness, elegance and length. A classic, old school, mature Rioja which is very much alive and a joy to drink. It’s at its peak but should plateau at this level for some time if well stored.HK$3,850.00 -

This deep-garnet-colored wine has aromas of blackberry, black currant and olive tapenade. It is soft at first sip, and then rugged tannins build on the palate, ferrying flavors of dark plum, pomegranate, cocoa powder, thyme and orange zest that wend their way to a surprisingly bright finish. Drink through 2035.HK$2,488.00 -

The 2018 Hacienda Monasterio, the wine that was previously labeled as Crianza, is a blend of 80% Tinto Fino, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot and 2% Malbec selected from the 100 hectares of their organically certified vineyard in the west part of Ribera del Duero. It had a traditional fermentation, destemmed and in 8,000-liter stainless steel tanks (a change from the 20,000-liter vats used in 2016) with indigenous yeasts, and it matured for 18 months in French oak barrels, 25% new. This wine represents the character of the property, including all the grapes. It's still a little young, with a creamy twist, a little biscuity with hints of cereals, juicy and with tannins but with balance. This is a vintage that has great balance and freshness, but right now it's a little too oaky for me—but it should develop nicely in bottle. They are now in the process of replacing the Merlot with Malbec, because they think Malbec can work well in the Ribera del Duero. 220,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2020.HK$755.00 -

The 2019 Hacienda Monasterio is floral, aromatic and precise, showing good but contained ripeness, with 15% alcohol. It's a similar blend as in previous years—80% Tinto Fino, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot and 2% Malbec. This is the first vintage they used their new 10,000-liter oak vat, so there are more lots fermented separately and then blended to create this cuvée that shows very good balance, juiciness, concentration, structure and power but with freshness and balance. Their idea is to gradually replace the Merlot with Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon, but that's going to be a slow process. They have 12 different soils classified on the property, and in 2019 they selected different soils for each wine, something that was not done in 2017; there will be more changes in this direction in the future. 182,666 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2021.HK$2,195.00 -
(6x75cl) 2011Wine Advocate (93)
I tasted three breathtaking wines, starting with the 2011 Crianza which is, year in, year out, one of the best crianzas from Ribera del Duero. It is a blend of mostly Tempranillo with 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot and 2% Malbec, and I wonder if the combination of grapes has something to do with the extra dimension and complexity that I often find in this wine. The vineyards are planted on the chalky slopes of this chateau-style winery which is surrounded by vineyards outside the village of Pesquera de Duero. The same time as some 6% of the whole cluster began going into the fermentation vats, also started using around 10% 500-liter barrels for the aging of the wine. For Sisseck, 2011 marks the end of an era, the end of high alcohol, but it all comes from the work in the vineyards improving on the balance, adapting yields to the character of the vintage. It has an explosive nose, with ripe, hedonistic aromas and the wood perfectly integrated into the wine. The palate is only medium to full-bodied, dense, glyceric, with polished tannins, and clean, with delineated flavors, not heavy and with the alcohol perfectly integrated and unnoticable. This is a big Ribera which feels light on its feet; a gentle giant, a triumph for the vintage. A curious 166,600 bottles were produced in 2011. Drink now-2019.HK$1,955.00 -

This superb Reserva from the textbook, cooler climate 2016 vintage is one of the best young wines I have ever tasted from Carlos de la Fuente and Peter Sisseck. Marrying Tinto Fino with 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, aged in 40% new wood, this comes from a parcel with a very high limestone content, which adds freshness on these warm slopes. Scented, graceful and refined, it has cassis and blackberry fruit, graceful tannins, subtle wood and a long, tapering finish. Exceptional winemaking. 2023-32HK$3,695.00 -

Somehow I didn't taste the 2017 Hacienda Monasterio, but I did taste the 2017 Reserva, which is quite impressive for such a challenging year in Ribera del Duero. They suffered less from the frost on the property, which is quite warm and usually frost-free. The wine has a seductive nose that combines raspberries and cranberries with herbs and flowers. It's ripe at 15% alcohol, but it does not show heat or alcohol. This is 80% to 82% Tinto Fino and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon that matured in barrel for some 20 months. It's medium to full-bodied, juicy, rich and velvety, with fine, chalky tannins. The wine really transcends the challenges of the vintage and delivers more than I expected. 35,000 bottles produced.HK$3,285.00 -

(78% tempranillo and 22% cabernet sauvignon; aged for 20 months in small French oak barrels): Deep ruby. Intense aromas of blackcurrant, cherry compote and licorice, with a suggestion of sexy oak spices. Supple and broad but lively, with ripe, sweet dark berry flavors lifted by juicy acidity. Smooth, sweet and seamless on the finish, which hangs on with outstanding tenacity and youthful tannic grip.HK$10,585.00 -

The top shelf expression of Hacienda Monasterio, the Reserva Especial is not produced every year and could be the equivalent of a Gran Reserva. It is typically a Temperanillo-dominated blend complemented with Cabernet Sauvignon. Quantities may vary but for the 2015 vintage, only 4,000 bottles were produced. Although sitting in bottle for years now, the estate doesn’t allow anyone to taste the wine until it's actually released, which is usually a few months later in the calendar year than its younger siblings.HK$5,500.00 -

Brilliant ruby-red. A complex, expansive bouquet evokes red fruit preserves, smoky minerals, exotic spices and candied flowers that show excellent clarity. Sappy, alluringly sweet and penetrating on the palate, offering juicy black raspberry, cherry liqueur, spicecake flavors and a suave floral undertone. Plays richness off of energy adroitly and shows no rough edges. The mineral and spice notes drive an impressively long, sharply delineated finish that's framed by velvety, steadily mounting tannins.HK$1,930.00 -

Pale amber, with touches of orange and brown. Mahogany wood-polish lift to cooked orange peel, hazelnut fudge, cinnamon spice, hard cheese and chocolate. Intense, powerful palate entry, with spice, toasted hazelnut and some richness of cooked citrus. Such intensity will be hard for some, but this is an exceptional wine with exceptional length.HK$3,695.00 -
